We will also stop at Belém Tower to take some photos. We will then proceed to Sintra town, UNESCO World Heritage Site, located 20 Km from Lisbon. Our next stop will be Fátima, one of the largest Marian worship centers and we visit the village of Aljustrel, where the three little shepherds were born. Ask your travel agent for our optional tours. 2nd Day (Saturday) Lisbon/Vila de Sintra/Cascais/Estoril/Lisbon: At 09 a.m. your driver will meet you at your hotel for a sightseeing tour of Lisbon. We will be arriving in Belém where the 16th century Monastery of Jerónimos is (UNESCO World Heritage Site). We visit the the Belém pastry pastel factory dated from 1837. We will also stop at Belém Tower to take some photos. We will then proceed to Sintra town, UNESCO World Heritage Site, located 20 Km from Lisbon. Our first stop is in Óbidos, a small medieval town, placed within Óbidos castle walls. Schultz tip: try the famous cherry liquor ginginha in a chocolate cup (not included). We will continue to Nazaré, a fisherman s village famous for its giant waves. We visit the highest part to enjoy the breath-taking view over the town. We will proceed to Batalha where the Monastery of Batalha is, one of the most beautiful works of Portuguese and European Gothic architecture and UNESCO World Heritage Site, built to celebrate Portugal s victory in the infamous battle of Aljubarrota. Our next stop will be Fátima, one of the largest Marian worship centers and we visit the village of Aljustrel, where the three little shepherds were born. We will continue our tour to Lamego and visit its impressive 600 meters high baroque sanctuary, dedicated to Our Lady of Remedies. Accommodation and free time. 5th Day (Tuesday) Douro/Pinhão/ Boat ride in the Douro/: We will head towards Pinhão, the heart Douro Valley Wine Region, classified by UNESCO as Cultural Landscape. We will experience a boat ride in the Douro river among the vineyards and wine estates (tour included) and visit the Train Station which is decorated with a collection of beautiful tiles showing typical scenes of the Douro valley all related to port wine production. We will then leave for the city of, known as the birthplace of Portuguese nationality, take a walk and see the historic city center, UNESCO Cultural Heritage. After visiting the university, we depart to crossing the typical landscape of Alentejo, land of vines planted by Phoenicians, greeks and romans, and currently by large wine producers. We arrive in, UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will see the roman Templo de Diana (Diana s Temple), you will also have time to visit the Capela dos Ossos (Bones chappel) and to stroll in the city center if you wish. We continue to the Herdade do Esporão to visit and wine tasting ( included). We will continue to the southernmost region of Continental Portugal, the last region to be conquered by the portuguese to the Moors - people from North Africa in 1292. The architecture is typical, with terraces and Moorish chimneys and in the landscape we can see numerous almond trees, orange trees and other fruit trees, Moorish heritage that multiply in the Algarve fields. Arrival to the hotel and free evening. 6th Day (Wednesday) Algarve/Lagos/Ponta da Piedade/Sagres After breakfast, we will visit Ponta da Piedade, from the lighthouse it is possible to see several caves that show us a unique landscape. The village of Arraiolos is famous for its hand embroidered rugs. Next we will visit a winery, where we have included a wine tasting and lunch. We will arrive to, considered as World Heritage site. Santarém became part of the Order of Christ lands. This Order financially supported the Portuguese discoveries having strongly developed at that time which is still visible in the monuments of the city. Our visit begins at Portas do Sol Gardens, belvedere from where we can admire the view over the Tagus river. We can find the tomb of Pedro Alvares Cabral, the Portuguese navigator who discovered Brazil in 1500 in the church of Nossa Senhora da Graça. Next to it the house of Brazil which belonged to his family. We will continue to Belmonte, the birthplace of Pedro Alvares Cabral that still preserves its medieval characteristics. Here settled the first Jewish community during Spanish Inquisition persecution. We will visit the Castle, an important monument of the history of this village Belmonte, the Cabrais Pantheon and the Pelourinho. Accommodation. 4th Day (Friday) Belmonte/Cidade Rodrigo/Vila Nova de Foz Côa/Miranda do Douro After breakfast, we will leave towards the small village of Castelo Rodrigo, located at the top of the hill overlooking Spain and the Douro valley. A former Castro settlement with references to the presence of the moors. Get to know the Pelourinho, the Palace, the cistern and the Convent of Santa Maria de Aguiar, monuments that make this place unforgettable. We will continue to Vila Nova de Foz Côa, we will visit the Archaeologic Park Museum, World Heritage of humanity, that gathers a legacy of prehistoric sites of the Palaeolithic Cave Art, considered one of the most important in the world. We continue to Miranda do Douro, located at the banks of the river Douro, at the border with Spain, in an arid and mountainous region surrounded by the Natural Park of the International Douro with magnificent landscapes. Accommodation. 5th Day (Saturday) Miranda do Douro/Montesinho/Rio de Onor/ Gimonde/Bragança After breakfast we will take a cruise along the Douro river cliffs, through canyons, waterfalls and glaciers on the UNESCO cross-border Reserve Meseta Ibérica. Then we will proceed to Gimonde, a genuine village with beautiful landscapes where the rural lives in full communion with nature. The Bridge of Gimonde, also known as the Old Bridge, is located on the river Malara, it is the attraction of this village combined with the excellent gastronomy. Lunch time (included). We will continue towards the Natural Park of Montesinho in the extreme northeast of Portugal to visit the River Onor, small village crossed by the river that divides the village into two parts. It is one of the most emblematic north-eastern villages that remains to these days in a medieval communitarianism scheme. Shale and slate houses lined up in streets parallel to the river. Our drive continues to Bragança the capital of the northeast trasnmontano. Accommodation. 6th Day (Sunday) Bragança After breakfast we will visit the Cidadela Bragantina (Citadel) with a medieval legacy that can be found inside the walls, represented by the imponent Tower of Menagem (castle watch tower) the Pelourinho, the church of Santa Maria and the Domus Municipalis, a romanic building from the 12th century with an irregular pentagon shape. It is a unique example in the Iberian Peninsula. After visiting the Museum inside the castle, walk towards the Princess tower, from here you will have a magnificent view all over the city. Accommodation. 7th Day (Monday) Bragança/Mirandela/Chaves/Douro After breakfast, we will discover Mirandela, a beautiful city located on Tua river banks, full of flowers that fill the city of colour. We will visit the Tavóra Palace, a majestic and noble building which currently houses the Town Hall. We proceed to Chaves, located in a fertile valley nest to the river Tâmega, named by the romans as Aquae Flaviae due to the quality and healing properties of its thermal springs. Free time in the historical centre. We will go towards south where the Douro vineyards begin and stretch on terraces along Douro riverside. This is the first demarcated wine region in the world, where one of the popular wines in Portugal and in the world is produced. We will visit a winery estate in the Douro Valley to get familiar with the methods of producing port wine (visit and wine tasting included). Accommodation. 6th Day (Sunday) Coimbra/Aveiro/Oporto After breakfast, we will visit the city of students, bathed by the Mondego river, where the first university of Portugal was created, being one of the oldest in Europe. After visiting the university, former residence of Kings and its library, considered one of the most beautiful in the world and currently a World Heritage Site we will continue to Aveiro, known as the Venice of Portugal. We include a boat tour on board of a typical Moliceiro, along the Aveiro river to admire the beautiful Art Nouveau buildings and the salt pans. At time to be informed we go to Oporto, also known as the Invicta town (unbeatable town) and worldwide famous by its wine with the same name. During the panoramic tour we will have upon arrival, you will know the main tourist attractions of this beautiful city that has given its name to the country. We will drive along the banks of the Douro river to enjoy the view of the wine cellars on the opposite side of the river, we will visit other places and monuments that classify Oporto as World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Acommodation and free time. 7th Day (Monday)Oporto Breakfast and free day in the city: Accommodation. Schultz tip: Taste the famous Francesinha one of the traditional dishes of Oporto (not included). Visit the Café Majestic, Clérigos Tower, Lello Bookstore and Oporto Cathedral. Go to Ribeira and enjoy the life of this place. Accommodation. 8th Day (Tuesday) Oporto Breakfast. Hotel available until 11 am. Check out. At time to be informed, transfer to the airport. End our services. 4th Day (Friday) Marvão/Idanha-a-Velha/Monsanto/Belmonte Breakfast. We head towards the interior of Portugal, to make us return into the past, to learn the history and customs, traditions and the most genuine character of the Portuguese people. We will visit the historical villages of Portugal. Our first stop is in Idanha-a-Velha, founded by the Romans. It was several times invaded over the years, with a picturesque atmosphere, still preserves a valuable historical heritage. We will visit the Torre de Menagem (castle watch tower), built by the Knights Temple, the Wall and roman bridges, the Church of Santa Maria from the era of muslem rule and the Pelourinho located at the church square. Monsanto considered the most Portuguese village of Portugal, ancient and very well preserved, with its houses in the middle of giant granite blocks showing a unique image. We will visit the castle and its walls and the Lucano tower, the former bell tower from where we can see the symbol of the most Portuguese village. We will arrive in Belmonte, the birthplace of Pedro Álvares Cabral, the Portuguese navigator who discover Brazil in 1500, that still preserves its medieval characteristics. Here settled the first Jewish community during Spanish Inquisition persecution. We will visit the Castle, an important monument of the history of this village, the Cabrais Pantheon and the Pelourinho. Accommodation. 5th Day (Saturday) Belmonte/ Estrela/Piódão/Coimbra After breakfast, we will go to Manteigas, driving along the road of the Zêzere Glacial Valley, with landscapes of great beauty. The Torre, the highest point of Continental Portugal with 1993 meters high, sits on top. We will continue through the landscape of Estrela, lunch at a local restaurant. Next we go to Piódão, probably one of the most famous historical villages, with its shale houses, surrounded by the Açor mountain green landscape. An exclusive image that looks more like a postcard. We will visit the Main Church with its gilded wood high altar, the Algares Fountain, St. Peter s Chapel and Piódão s museum centre where the way of living of the population is portrayed.
