Background Information In the 1940s employees of MGM conducted a survey of theatres throughout New England. Data was collected and typed on a series of 5x8 pre-printed form cards. The information collected included name and location of theatre, date recorded, street address, city population according to the 1940 census, competing theatres, if they are affiliated with MGM and are showing MGM movies, when the theatre was built (approximately) the condition, seating capacity, the type of patronage, and if there was a balcony for non-white patrons. In addition to this information a 3x4.5 photograph was taken of the theatre s exterior and affixed to the form. Scope and Contents Note The collection consists of 608 cards organized alphabetically by geographic area with the exception of a few late editions at the end of the collections. The states surveyed include Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. The surveys document theatres in large and small markets and include a number of Drive-In theatres. Not every report card includes a photograph. It is unknown how many additional report cards exist, but the holdings in the THS archive do not represent a complete inventory of the reports. Other materials in the Theatre Historical Society holdings may relate to the topics in this archive. Consult the archivist for further research assistance.
