SUMMARY Thanks once again to everyone who entered, helped organise, judged and attended the dinner of the 2018.19 Fleurieu Food Olive Awards. In what was a light year for olives, we were very pleased to receive over 60 entries for the awards including a strong showing in the table olives section. The awards process culminated in a fabulous dinner at the Kitchen Door at Penny s Hill Winery which was sponsored by Peats Soil and Penny s Hill Wine. The 80 or so guests enjoyed a delicious three course dinner to celebrate the olive industry on the Peninsula. The overall medal tally was 16 gold medals, 15 silver medals and 27 bronze and the best in show winners were as follows: Matchett Productions & Big Sissy Foods - Matchett s Onion Water Crackers - the Bronwyn Busbridge Award for best produce using olive oil Hugo Wines - Willunga Farmers Market People s Choice Award Romley Estate - 2018 Signature Series Grand Reserve Koroneiki - Best Designed Product Award Coriole - 2017 Kalamata Olives - Best Olive in Show Award Southern Vales Christian College - Southern Vales EVOO - Best Olive Oil in Show Award Congratulations to all the winners especially to Southern Vales Christian College who have been regular entrants over recent years and as members of Fleurieu Food are very supportive of the food businesses in our region. JUDGE s COMMENTS I would like to extend my thanks to Fleurieu Food for inviting me to work with Dr Wirthenson to search out the best olive products from the Fleurieu Peninsula and Kangaroo Island. The stuff people enjoy eating! The relative quality of the seven gold medal extra virgin olive oils was split between the panel of the presiding and head judges which in total had over 120 international, national and state Royal competition caps between them. Why? They were all outstanding extra virgin olive oils but differed in style and character. All were fresh, distinctive, and all would make food sing. Some were classically central Italian in style - herbaceous, bitter and pungent. But they also displayed a complex Leccino like malty magic. The other outstanding oils were complex in different ways less bitter and peppery, but fragrant and aromatic; reeking of Koroneiki and SA Verdale.
