Valden Tours, Inc. May 15-22, 2019 SPRINGTIME in Colonial Williamsburg Annapolis Our Nation s Capital

Springtime in the mid-atlantic.from Virginia to Maryland to the District of Columbia. Join your OLLI friends for this outstanding travel opportunity. We start with a visit to Colonial Williamsburg and an opportunity to stroll the streets of a re-created 18th century city which today serves as the world s largest living history museum. From there we move to Maryland s capital city of Annapolis. While the home of the U.S. Naval Academy, this 350 year old city has more surviving 18th century buildings than any other American city. And finally, it s on to our nation s capital for a multi-day visit encompassing many of the city s museums and memorials. Please join us! The Itinerary Wednesday, May 15: We travel by motorcoach from Lincoln to the Omaha airport where we board a non-stop flight to Washington, D.C. Reagan airport. Our East Coast motorcoach will take us to the Embassy Suites Williamsburg for our overnight accommodations. Thursday, May 16: Following breakfast we will meet our Colonial Guides and begin our escorted tour of Colonial Williamsburg. The Capitol is where Virginia patriots developed principles of self-government, individual liberty and responsible leadership. The Governor s Palace reflects the period of Lord Dunmore s residence, the last English governor of the Virginia colony. We will explore the Capitol, a variety of restored and reconstructed homes and public buildings, museums, craft shops, and special entertainment. Our included lunch will be served in an authentic Colonial tavern. Use your free time in the afternoon to explore places of interest in Williamsburg. Mid-afternoon we depart for Annapolis, MD. Early evening we check into the Doubletree Annapolis and enjoy an included dinner in the hotel while luggage is delivered to our room. (B,L,D) Friday, May 17: Following the included breakfast at our hotel, we depart for a tour of Annapolis with a glimpse into some of the famous houses and public buildings. We visit the Maryland Statehouse, the oldest U.S. Statehouse in continuous legislative use. Ride through the streets of the Annapolis Historic District, and then tour the U.S. Naval Academy. While on the Academy grounds we will witness the Noon formation where the entire brigade assembles and marches into lunch. Our included lunch is at the Officer s Club, a fine dining locale at the Academy. Those interested might try some Maryland Crabcakes.

Mid-afternoon we will travel to Washington, D.C. and check into the Georgetown Marriott, home for the rest of our trip. An early dinner will be on your own prior to departure for the Marine Corps Barracks. The evening will begin with a concert by the United States Marine Band, followed by the Evening Parade which has become a universal symbol of the professionalism, discipline, and Esprit de Corps of the United States Marines. (B,L) Saturday, May 18: Following breakfast at the hotel we head to downtown Washington and a day visiting museums and memorials.. Three options will be available to our tour participants: (1) those who feel comfortable exploring the mall area by themselves or with a small group of friends can explore those sites which are of most interest to them; (2) those individuals who feel more comfortable travelling in a small group with a leader who is familiar with the area can participate in a more structured walking and riding tram tour; and (3) those who prefer going on the motorcoach for a more extensive visit to fewer sites will be led by a tour coordinator. (Note: upon completion of the tour registration process, each participant will be asked to identify which of the three approaches is of most interest, and what sites they would like to visit. Appropriate itineraries will be developed) Suggested cafeterias will be identified, or food trucks will be handy for purchasing lunch. At 3:45 p.m. the groups will meet at a pre-determined site and return to our hotel for a brief rest. Our evening will start with an included dinner at District ChopHouse and Brewery. From there, we will go to the Arena Stage for the inspirational a cappella tribute Jubilee. The world-renowned Fisk Jubilee Singers shattered racial barriers in the U.S. and abroad singing before a wide array of audiences in the 1800 s. For centuries, the bold a capella African American ensemble born on the campus of Fisk University has blended their rich voices sharing a heritage of suffering, strength and endurance. (B, D) Sunday, May 19: Following breakfast at our hotel we will go to Arlington National Cemetery for a tour of America s shrine to valor and sacrifice. We will visit the final resting place of President Kennedy and several family members. We will board trams for the cemetery tour which will include a stop at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and an opportunity to observe the changing of the guard which occurs every hour on the hour. Departing the cemetery we will make a photo stop at the Marine Corps Memorial, one of the largest bronze statues ever cast depicts the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima. Then, on to Old Town Alexandria. This is a beautifully preserved historic district on the Potomac River and is the heart of the city George Washington called home. There will be time to enjoy lunch on your own, stroll some of the cobblestone streets and explore shops in the downtown area. At 2:00 p.m. we will meet our motorcoach and enjoy a driving tour through Alexandria, passing the Masonic National Memorial, Robert E. Lee s Boyhood Home and other sites. This afternoon we visit Mount Vernon, the estate of George Washington. There will be time to tour the mansion, America s most visited historic house. There will also be time to stroll the grounds and see George and Martha s burial vault. Our included dinner this evening will be at the Union Street Public House in Alexandria. Following dinner their will be a leisurely walk to the Alexandria docks to embark on a 45-minute cruise to Georgetown before returning to our hotel. (B,D)

This afternoon we take a driving tour of the major national memorials. We will stop at each memorial to explore and take photos. Stops will include Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, National World War II Memorial, Martin Luther King Memorial, Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial and the Jefferson Memorial. We will return to the hotel to refresh prior to our evening s special dinner. (Note: options for independent explorations will be available in the same manner at Sunday s tours. Individuals can establish their own stops for either the morning or afternoon. Pick up times and locations will be identified.) Monday, May 20: Following breakfast at our hotel we go to Capitol Hill and check in at the Capitol Visitor Center. We take a walking tour of the Capitol which has housed Congress since 1800 and is one of the world s most imposing buildings. If Congress is in session we will briefly view the proceedings from the Visitor s Gallery. We then visit the Library of Congress, the largest national library in the world with over 650 miles of bookshelves. We will exploree the Thomas Jefferson Building, the original Library building and one of the District s most ornamented buildings. We also pass the Supreme Court Building. Lunch will be on your own at the Capitol Visitor Center. A special and unique evening dinner and entertainment is scheduled. You will enjoy dinner in a foreign embassy. When you walk into an embassy in Washington, D.C. you have officially left the United States and are treated as a welcomed guest by our host embassy. You may wish to bring your passport and have it stamped by the embassy staff. Participants should be alerted that in very rare situations the embassy may be closed to visitors on very short notice. If that is the case we have selected an alternate restaurant, Clyde s of Gallery Place. (B,D) Tuesday, May 21: Again, breakfast will be provided at our hotel. This morning we will visit a most interesting site in Washington, President Lincoln s Cottage. This cottage is located on a picturesque hilltop and is the most significant historic site, aside from the White House, directly associated with Lincoln s presidency. During the Civil War, President Lincoln and his family resided there from June to November of 1862, 1863, and 1864. All totaled, Lincoln lived there for a quarter of his presidency. Lunch will be on your own at a convenient location. In the afternoon you can choose to visit either one of Washington s newer historical and cultural museums, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, or the National Museum of the American Indian. The African American History and Culture Museum is one of the city s newest with an opportunity to understand American history through the lens of the African American experience. The National Museum of the American Indian includes items and displays from the American Southwest, Hawaii, Canada, and South and Central America. See items from the great American pyramid builders to the beautiful craftsmanship of North, Central, and South America s indigenous people. Our farewell dinner this evening is at Tony and Joe s on the waterfront in Georgetown. This will be followed by an evening illuminated driving tour of Washington s grand buildings, memorials and monuments.. We will take time to walk through the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts and enjoy the spectacular view of the city from the terrace. (B,D)

Wednesday, May 22: Following hotel check-out we depart for the Nebraska Congressional Breakfast which is held in the Dirksen Senate Office building on Capitol Hill. This 75 year old tradition was initiated in 1943 by Senator Hugh Butler who wanted to meet informally with the other members of the Nebraska congressional delegation to discuss legislation. Members started inviting guests to these meetings and a tradition was born. It is the oldest and only ongoing regularly scheduled gathering with constituents on Capitol Hill. Later in the morning we will travel along Embassy Row. After the Civil War, the powerful and socially elite built large mansions along Massachusetts Avenue. After the Great Depression many of the families who built the homes went broke. Today the area is known as Embassy Row. Embassies, associations, foundations, and clubs have claimed and restored these elegant homes. Our final included luncheon will be at Café Deluxe which is located on Wisconsin Avenue in the Embassy Row area of Washington. Following this leisurely luncheon we drive to Reagan International Airport for our non-stop return flight to Omaha, arriving at 5:20 p.m. We transfer to our motorcoach and return to Lincoln by 7:00 p.m. (B)
