NOVEMBER 26, 2018 PRINT COMPETITION REMINDER! Don't forget to stop by and see all the hard work & talent of your fellow members! FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 30 Photography West Meeting & Program - Print Competition Results 9:30 AM - 12:00 PM SCW Christian Church - 20803 N 151st Street (corner of 151st & RH Johnson) FROM PATRICIA CASEY Hello everyone, By the time this is published Thanksgiving will have passed and we all will be remembering the great food and friendship shared on that day. Of course, I ate too much again and I'll need to add a couple of extra walking days to my routine. Now onward to the end of the year and looking forward to two wonderful shows in December presented by James Kerrick on December 14th & Bruce Taubert on December 21st. When we return from our winter break in January, the club transitions to a new leadership team. Included in this newsletter are some updates and a non-member asking for a photographer. I would like to encourage all of our members to come up with ideas on how to utilize our beautiful club room to its fullest. Someone mentioned a cookie exchange...now that's different, but could be fun. Perhaps showing YouTube videos in the classroom on a particular subject. Be creative...just remember any activity after our approved hours requires a request to be sent to the Scheduling office by the club president. I'm always glad to process this form... just be sure to submit your request a few days in advance of your event (at the minimum), but a week would be better, for your event. Have a wonderful day and see you at the Sun City West Christian Church, north east corner of RH Johnson & 151st at 9:30 this Friday for our wonderful Print
Competition Awards and Exhibition. Come early for socializing, coffee & donuts...(thanks, Ethel) CLUB ROOM ITEMS NEW PHONE: There is a new phone on the monitor's desk. No worries, it works the same as the old one for retrieving messages. You can tell there's a message if the light above the NEC name at top is glowing. The procedure for retrieving messages is in the monitor handbook. If the call is something you can handle, by all means do so. Should the call be beyond your experience with the club or a question you're not able to answer you can look at the list of helping heroes. Call one of them if it's a related question to their area of expertise or you can call the club president. The roster is in the desk drawer. Speaking of the ROSTER...we no longer have the roll-a-dex cards for member information. The roster that is in the drawer needs to remain there. Please don't take it home. You can now print your own via the email sent by the membership team or save it to your desktop. TRAVEL BOOK: Did you know that the club has a white three ring binder for travel tips & suggestions? It is located in the club library bookcase. Doug Allan sent a wonderful list of activities in Arizona by month as well as other events & locations. It has been printed and placed in the book. If you have any ideas for places you've been that are great to photograph or just have a fun day outing, be sure to write it up in the book...there are blank pages for this. (Thanks, Doug) (Patricia Casey) REQUEST FROM A COMMUNITY RESIDENT Lola Crilly would like a photographer to take photos of her family at a reunion on Sunday, December 9th. If interested please give Lola at call at 1-303-916-0591. This would be a great opportunity to practice your portrait skills. If you charge a fee, be sure to be up front with the amount.
FROM YOUR TREASURER Please be sure to cash all checks that are from Photography West before December 31. It will make life a lot simpler for me in preparing the CR-7. Much appreciated. Thank you, Bernardine 2019 MENTOR PROGRAM David Fudge has recently stepped down from the position of Coordinator of the Mentor/ Mentee program, This is a role that demands a large amount of time and commitment, both of which David gave to the program in 2018. In 2019, the coordinator role will be shared by Darrell Pierson (VP Education and Communication elect) and Tom Williams (the current VP Education and Communication). There will be an important meeting of those who have recently served as mentors in the program on Tuesday, November 27th at 3:00 PM to discuss the content and direction of the program in 2019. Bob Hankin TRAVEL Oatman, Laughlin and Lake Havasu Carpool Trip There is going to be a Hot Air Balloon Festival in Lake Havasu. There is also a Lighthouse Boat Tour the same day. There are multiple options for this trip. Carpools will be organized according to who wants to do what. Option 1 leaves Sun City West On Wednesday, January 9th. We will drive to Oatman to see the donkeys and to have lunch. Then drive on to Laughlin where we will have dinner and spend the night. A recent check of Expedia shows that the Aquarius at $38/night, Harrah's at $25/night, Edgewater at $24/night, and the Tropicana at $42/night. Other locations are also available. Thursday morning we will leave for the 1½ hour drive to Lake Havasu, where we will meet up with those who are taking Option 2. Option 2 leaves Sun City West Thursday morning, January 10th about 8:30 a.m. to arrive in Lake Havasu. The boat ride on the lake departs at 1:00 P.M. and visits 17 of the 25 replica lighthouses. The cost is $30.00 plus tax for the two hour cruise. They recommend layering clothes for this tour, since it can get a bit cooler on the water. They also have heavy warm blankets on board should you need them. Then, at 4:30 P.M. the Balloon Festival Mass Ascension takes place. Its a sight you don't want to miss.
Your next decision is whether you want to return to Sun City West after the balloons or if you want to spend the night in Lake Havasu. FYI, the Friday Club Meeting is featuring Colleen Miniuk-Sperry whose topic is "Finding Your Creative Voice". Hotels can get expensive in Lake Havasu. The less expensive ones are Knights Inn ($82), Days Inn ($119), Super 8 ($84), Island Suites ($99) and Motel 6 ($69). Others are around $250 or more. Prices are likely to increase as it gets closer to the Balloon Festival, so if you're interested in staying there, make your own reservation.
