s p o r t Illawarra lead the way in NBL By CHRIS PIKE THE Illawarra Hawks have inspired the AUS National Basketball League and clubs toward holding a league-wide Indigenous Round next season. The Hawks held the NBL s first Indigenous Game against Sydney Kings and unveiled their Indigenous-themed playing strip. The NBL has been blessed with several Indigenous stars over its 41-season history including the likes of Patty Mills, Nate Jawai, Danny Morseu, Timmy Dugan, Michael and Chris Cedar, Claude Williams and Kerry Williams all making their mark. But unlike the AFL and NRL, the NBL is yet to take celebrating its Indigenous history to the next level. Enter the Hawks. Illawarra took it upon themselves in December to host their own Indigenous Game against the Kings in Wollongong. The initiative was led by another former NBL Indigenous player, Tyson Demos, with support from the Illawarra Aboriginal Medical Service. The Hawks playing strip was created by local Indigenous student, Harry Pitt. The game proved a tremendous success and the Hawks deserve enormous credit for the initiative. NBA star Mills took time out from his busy schedule with the San Antonio Spurs to congratulate the Hawks and to urge the NBL to do more in the future to recognise the contribution of Indigenous basketballers. Sydney coach and Australian basketball legend Andrew Gaze joined in that call after being proud to have been part of the game against the Hawks. The Kings will wear their own Aboriginal-design strip in February against Cairns, with the Taipans to also host their own Indigenous Game. Cairns own Nathan Jawai is the only Aboriginal or Torres Strait Island player in the league this season. To the NBL s credit, they have heard the call and chief executive Jeremy Loeliger confirmed the league will have a complete Indigenous Round next season. Illawarra Hawks Jordair Jett celebrates a slam dunk during the round nine NBL match between the Hawks and the Sydney Kings at Wollongong Entertainment Centre last month.
