49 KM EAST OF THE NATIONAL CAPITAL SNAPSHOT OF AREA The United Counties of Prescott and Russell are a popular choice for many residents who choose to reside in a rural setting while remaining close to the City of Ottawa. The total population of the Eastern Ottawa Valley is close to 200,000 people. The major highway between Montreal and Ottawa and primary thoroughfare for the entire region is Highway 417. Highway 417 sees an average of 60,000 vehicles per day and is used as the main route for commuters residing in towns throughout the Eastern Ottawa Valley. Highway 2 is another commuter road. Bourget, ON (pop. 3,000) is a hamlet located 49km from Downtown Ottawa. The surrounding area is largely farmland. Centrally located in Eastern Ontario, approximately halfway between Casselman (and Hwy 417) and Rockland (at Hwy 17) the area s largest town. Bourget itself is an ideal village setting with a historic main street containing most essential retail shops and services including the iconic Bourgetel Building which is being redeveloped into an Italian Restaurant Bistro. Its proximity to Ottawa and high level of bilingualism has increased its appeal as a bedroom community and new housing starts have risen over the last few years. As the town grows, the Regional governments have begun capital improvements in Bourget including a business and industrial park, a new sewer system, creation of a museum at the old train station along the paved cycling trail. The continued expansion and promotion of Larose Forest is also a priority; this man made forest is over 26,000 acres and is a year round regional tourist draw for hikers, picnickers, cross country skiers and snowmobilers. It is an Eco Interpretation Centre where $12 million will be invested to build 40 cottages to accommodate 200 persons for overnight stays. Page 2
