ETHNIC GROUPS There are more than 70 dinstict ethnic groups in Kenya. They are divided in: BANTU PEOPLE They are the single largest population in Kenya. They came from West-Central Africa. They include the largest group: the Kikuyu (7 million)
NILOTIC PEOPLE They are the second largest group. They are native of Nilo- Sahaarian territories. They are herdsmen and cattle-rustlers too. CUSHITIC SPEAKERS They are a small minority. Cushitic is the language of the Afro-Asiatic family. They came from Ethiopia and Somalia. Most of them are Muslim. NON-INDIGENOUS GROUPS ARABS They are historically important. They came from Yemen and Oman. They are concentrated along the coast. INDIANS They are the descendants of migrants recruited from British India (1896-1901). They are concentrated in the business sector EUROPEANS They are the descendants of British colonials. Many of them continue to dominate the business community
Kenya s population is largely African but there are Asian and European minorities English is the official language in Kenya and it is used for International trade Education Jurisprudence Swahili is another national language and is spoken by nearly 100 percent of the Kenyan population. Temperatures and rainfalls vary according to the dominant winds that determine two seasons: from October to March warm winds coming from Arabia prevail from April to September cooler and more moist winds coming from Indian Ocean prevail. At the beginning of each season there are the two rainy periods : The long rainy season" from April to June The short rainy season" from October to December While in the western plateaus it rains a lot between June and September, too. Showers are more abundant along the coast and in the south-west (zones 1 and 2)
Fauna In Kenya there are the big five: the elephant, the rhinoceros, the lion, the buffalo and the leopard. But there are also other important animals, for example the hippopotamus, the giraffe and the antelope. The migration of the gnu in Kenya takes place between August and September and crosses the park of Masai Mara Game Reserve, involving 1.5 million specimens, including zebras and antelopes.
Flora Baobab: famous for its longevity. Umbrella acacia: takes its name from the shape of its foliage. Mangrove: a plant that grows on the tropical marine coast, and can survive in salt water. Obelia: reaches a height of 3 meters and has blue flowers.
