Year HELSINKI TOURISM STATISTICS FIGURE 1. Monthly overnights in Helsinki Nearly 2.5 million nights recorded in Nights spent at registered accommodation establishments in Helsinki totalled nearly 2.5 million in. This was about 4, or 1.6% less than the year before. In, when Helsinki was one of the European Cities of Culture, nights reached a record 2.59 million. In monthly figures were up in,, and but were down in the other months, compared with the year before. Nights reached an all-time high for the month of in (Figure 1). Foreigners' share of nights over 6% International visitors accounted for 6.7% of registered nights in Helsinki in. This was one percentage point higher than in, continuing the previous trend. In foreigners accounted for 72% of nights. Domestic nights were higher than foreigners' nights only in. Domestic nights were down every month except and, compared with the year before. The drop for the year as a whole was 1.5%. The total declined by 5, or 1.9% in. The decline continued in, with the total down by 4, or 1.6%. In two years Helsinki thus experienced a drop of 9, nights. The total in was still higher than in, however. Helsinki's share of nights in Finland also peaked in at 16.1%. In - its share has remained steady at 15.7%. Overnights in Helsinki by country of residence Strong growth in tourism from China The number of nights for visitors from China rose by nearly 8% in to 58,5. This was about the same as the figure for visitors from Norway. Nights declined in for the most important markets - the domestic market, Britain, Russia, Sweden and the United States. Germany was an exception, with nights rising to over 1,. Growth was recorded for a number of smaller markets, however. The strongest relative growth was recorded for visitors from China, Spain and Poland. The figures for France, the Benelux countries, Latvia and Lithuania also increased considerably in (Table 1). Highest market share among visitors from outside Europe Helsinki accounted for nearly 7% of Chinese nights in Finland. It also accounted for clearly over half the total for visitors from the United States and Japan. On the European market Helsinki's share was highest among visitors from Spain (5.6%). It was lowest among visitors from Sweden and Norway (Figure 4). Year HELSINKI TOURISM STATISTICS 3 Leisure travel breaks million mark Leisure travel accounted for 1,88,6 nights in Helsinki in, breaking the million mark for the first time. This was 112,3 more than the year before. On the other hand business travel declined by 96,6 nights and other travel by 55,7 nights in. The figure for business travel was only 1, higher than the figure for leisure travel. Nights were broken down as follows in : leisure travel 43.6%, business travel 47.6%, other 8.8% (Table 2 and Figure 5). Occupancy rate and average price down The occupancy rate at registered accommodation establishments in Helsinki was 65.% in. This was lower than in any year since 1996. The occupancy rate was 66.4% in and reached an all-time high of 68.3% in, during Helsinki's Year of Culture. The average price of overnight accommodation in Helsinki was 67.75 in. The figure reached an all-time high of 68.64 in. Owing to the fall in the average price as well as nights, accommodation sales fell by over 5 million from the peak level in. Accommodation sales totalled 168.7 million in (Figure 5 and Table 3). No major change in capacity Registered accommodation capacity in Helsinki totalled 14,76 beds in, which was nearly the same as the year before. The number of accommodation establishments has remained unchanged in the past three years and changes in the number of beds have been minor (Table 4). Decline in international congresses A total of 85 international congresses were held in Helsinki in. This was slightly less than the figure in (89). Year HELSINKI TOURISM STATISTICS 4 Upturn in air traffic in final months of The number of passengers at the Helsinki airport totalled 9.61 million in, down from 1.3 million the year before. International traffic declined by 2.4%, domestic traffic 8.4% and total traffic 4.2%. Domestic traffic was down every month in, compared with the year before. On the other hand, international traffic turned up in. This reflects the influence of the terrorist attacks in, which led to a sharp drop in passengers in the following months. was the busiest month for domestic traffic and for international traffic. International traffic accounted for over 7% of total traffic, which was slightly higher than the year before (Table 5). Ship traffic to Estonia sets new record The number of passengers in ship traffic between Helsinki and Tallinn reached 6.6 million in, up 3, or.5% over the year before. The total number of passengers at the Port of Helsinki in was 8.84 million, down 1.5% from the year before. This was due to a drop in Swedish traffic. The number of passengers on services to and from Sweden totalled 2.54 million, which was 3.3% less than in. The number of passengers on services to and from Germany totalled 161,, down 5.8%. Services to and from Tallinn accounted for nearly 69% of total ship traffic in. This was nearly two percentage points higher than the year before. Services to and from Stockholm accounted for less than 3% of the total (Figure 8 and Table 6). Slight drop in cruise traffic Helsinki received 186 visiting cruises in -, which was slightly less than the year before. The number of cruise passengers totalled 13,, down 12% (Table 7). TABLE 5. Year HELSINKI TOURISM STATISTICS 5 Record number of visitors at the City Tourist Office The number of persons visiting the City Tourist Office (Pohjoisesplanadi 19) reached a record 34, in. This was 4% higher than the year before. Visits have nearly tripled in the past ten years. In the City Tourist Office set a new record for the number of visitors in a month, which climbed to 66,6 (Figure 9). In addition over 2,1 customers were served by phone and over 5,4 enquiries were answered by e-mail, post or fax. Helsinki Helps assisted over 15,3 customers in the city centre during the summer. A total of 37,9 customers visited the new information point in the Hotel Booking Centre at the railway station, which opened at the beginning of. All in all the City Tourist Office provided information on Helsinki to more than 58, customers (Figure 9). Linnanmäki still number one Linnanmäki Amusement Park remained the most popular attraction in Helsinki and had 1.1 million visitors, which was nearly the same as in. The second most popular attraction was Suomenlinna fortress with 682, visitors. It was followed by the Helsinki Zoo with 567, visitors, which signified a sharp increase. Temppeliaukio Church also experienced an increase and had 542, visitors. The National Gallery, Ateneum held several interesting exhibitions and enjoyed the biggest rise in popularity among museums. It attracted 245, visitors, which was a full 7% more than in. The second most popular church was the Uspenski Cathedral with 452, visitors or about the same as the year before.
