Chan Chan, photo by Peru North Traveling with You Maxwell K. (Mike) Hearn Maxwell K. (Mike) Hearn, Douglas Dillon Chairman, Department of Asian Art, began working at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1971, helping oversee the expansion of The Met s collection of Chinese art as well as major additions to its exhibition spaces. He has worked on more than 50 exhibitions and authored or contributed to numerous catalogues. Mike, who received his undergraduate degree in art history from Yale University and his Ph.D. from Princeton, has taught graduate and undergraduate seminars on Chinese painting at Yale, Princeton, Columbia, and the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University, and traveled extensively in Asia. Thursday, May 16 Departure / Lima, Peru Depart on a direct flight from Newark to Lima, Peru s cosmopolitan capital, arriving in the late evening for check-in to your hotel. Friday, May 17 Lima Begin the day with an orientation tour. View important colonial buildings at the Plaza Mayor, whose history predates the Spanish, and marvel at the religious fervor of the conquistadors at the Monasteries of San Francisco and Santo Domingo. Following lunch, enjoy a focused visit to the Museo de la Nación to see its newly installed display devoted to the Paracas culture (800-100 B.C.) and its superb textiles. Conclude at the Museo Larco, known for its outstanding collections, including a room of erotic pre-incan pottery. Our welcome dinner tonight will be at the museum. Saturday, May 18 Lima Discover the Pedro de Osma Museum, a turn-of-the-century seaside villa with superb paintings, sculptures, and décor from the viceregal period. Continue to the Amano Textile Museum, featuring exceptional ancient Peruvian weavings. After lunch in an elegant restaurant in the neighborhood, explore nearby shops and galleries, including Dédalo, displaying contemporary Peruvian crafts, art, clothing, and other items for sale in a 100-year-old mansion. Dinner is at Central, the flagship establishment of famed local chef Virgilio Martínez Véliz and rated as one of the best restaurants in the world. Sunday, May 19 Lima / Ica Drive south from Lima to nearby Pachacamac, dedicated to the terrifying god of creation, fire, and earthquakes. This was the most important religious complex in coastal Peru before Pizarro s arrival. After lunch at a local restaurant, continue to Huacachina, a surreal oasis resort surrounded by towering dunes, whose green lagoon is said to have healing powers. The remainder of the afternoon is at leisure to enjoy the lagoon or the surrounding dunes. Accommodations: Paracas Luxury Collection Resort Hotel Monday, May 20 Ica / Lima / Trujillo Drive to Pisco to board small airplanes and fly over the famed Nazca lines, still a mystery to scholars despite nearly a century of study. Following lunch at the hotel, board a private charter flight north to Trujillo. Accommodations are at the Libertador Hotel, located on the main plaza of this well-preserved colonial city. Accommodations: Libertador Hotel Tuesday, May 21 Trujillo Following an architectural tour, drive south to view an excavation in the company of a local archaeologist. See immense huacas, temples dedicated to the sun and moon, built nearly two thousand years ago by the Moche civilization. Visit Museo Huacas de Moche, which features an ancient model that shows how mummies continued their existence alongside the living. The striking Temple of the Moon is decorated with vibrant painted reliefs and striking geometric patterns. Lunch is in Huanchaco, a popular resort area where fishermen in traditional reed totora boats can be seen afloat on the Pacific. This afternoon visit the vast imperial complex of

Chan Chan, the UNESCO-recognized ancient capital of the Chimú Empire and the largest pre-columbian city in the Americas. Dinner is at a local restaurant. Accommodations: Libertador Hotel Wednesday, May 22 Trujillo / Chiclayo Begin with a driving tour of the archaeological complex of El Brujo (the shaman), with a guided, behind-the-ropes viewing of excavations that illustrate court life in the time of the Moches. Also on site is the fascinating Lady of Cao Museum, dedicated to a mysterious, tattooed queen discovered in 2006, who is the first pre- Columbian female ruler ever unearthed by archaeologists. Check in at the Casa Andina Select Chiclayo. Dinner is at the hotel. Accommodations: Casa Andina Select Chiclayo Thursday, May 23 Chiclayo Explore the Brüning National Archaeological Museum, featuring the regalia of the recently discovered Priestess of Chornancap and artifacts of the Moche, Chimú, Lambayeque, and other civilizations of northern Peru; its dazzling Gold Room is a special highlight. Travel to nearby Lambayeque for a specially arranged visit to the Royal Tombs of Sipán Museum, led by its director, Dr. Walter Alva. His discovery of the tombs in 1987 has been compared to Howard Carter s findings in Egypt. Marvel at the treasures from the burial chamber of the Lord of Sipán, an aristocrat of the Moche culture, which flourished a thousand years before the Incas. Continue with Dr. Alva to the site at Huaca Rajada, where the discoveries were made. After lunch, join Dr. Alva's son Ignacio, also an archaeologist, to discover Cerro Ventarrón, site of a 4,000-year-old temple with painted murals. This evening enjoy a dinner of regional specialties at an acclaimed restaurant. Accommodations: Casa Andina Select Chiclayo Friday, May 24 Chiclayo / Sacred Valley Depart on a flight to Cusco, connecting in Lima. Enjoy a condor s-eye view of the dramatic scenery as we fly over the Andes. Upon arrival, continue by coach to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Admire the lush and rugged landscape, Andean towns, and Incan terraces still farmed in the traditional manner, and stop for lunch at Mil, the latest establishment from chef/owner Virgilio Martínez Véliz of Central. Continue to Chinchero, a former Inca royal estate that is home to the finest contemporary weaving center in the Andes. Check in at the Tambo del Inka Resort and Spa. Dinner is at the hotel. Accommodations: Tambo del Inka Resort and Spa Saturday, May 25 Sacred Valley Explore the Incan fortress of Ollantaytambo, where Manco Inca and his band of rebels defeated Pizarro s soldiers in one of the few battles lost by the Spanish; the village below the ruins retains its original Incan layout and character. Lunch is at the beautifully situated Hacienda Huayoccari near Yucay. Afterwards, you may wish to visit the handicraft market in nearby Pisac and the remarkable sun temple overlooking the village, or return to the hotel to relax or enjoy a spa treatment. Accommodations: Tambo del Inka Resort and Spa Sunday, May 26 Machu Picchu Take the luxury Sacred Valley train to Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incas, with lunch on board. Check into the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge, located on the site itself. This afternoon is our first opportunity to explore Machu Picchu. This royal retreat, untouched by the conquistadors, was unknown to archaeologists until American explorer Hiram Bingham rediscovered it a century ago. Its expertly crafted structures were planned to harmonize with the spectacular landscape. As Bingham wrote in National Geographic, Remarkable as is the architecture of Machu Picchu, and impressive as is the extent of the stone-cutting done by a people who had no steel or iron tools, neither of these things leaves more impression on the mind of the visitor than the inexpressible beauty and grandeur of the surroundings. Dinner is at the hotel. Accommodations: Belmond Sanctuary Lodge Monday, May 27 Machu Picchu / Cusco Today we will have a full morning to explore the site. You may wish to rise early to hike the short distance to Inti Punku, the Incan sun gate, to witness the sun rise through the mist over Machu Picchu. Koricancha, Cusco, photo by John Robert McNally

Following lunch at the hotel, board the Vistadome train to Cusco and transfer to the elegant Belmond Palacio Nazarenas, a restored 16th-century Carmelite convent. Tuesday, May 28 Cusco Explore this ancient capital of the Incas on a tour that includes the Plaza de Armas and its strikingly ornate cathedral. A special highlight is the Convent of Santo Domingo, built atop legendary Koricancha, the most sumptuous temple in the Inca Empire. Koricancha, which means Golden Courtyard in Quechua, was dedicated to the sun god and filled with life-size, solid-gold statues of llamas, shepherds, and other figures. Wednesday, May 29 Cusco Visit Tambomachay, a sacred bathing spring, the Incan ruins of Puca Pucara (Red Fortress), and the amazing fortress of Sacsayhuamán, built without mortar. Lunch is at an exclusive colonial house on the grounds of a former Inca palace. The afternoon is at leisure to explore Cusco on your own. Possible destinations include the Museo de Arte Precolombino, Museo Inka, and the Museo Machu Picchu, which feature artifacts from tombs of royal retainers who served the emperors. Enjoy a festive farewell dinner tonight at a fashionable local restaurant. Thursday, May 30 Cusco / Lima / Return Enjoy free time to explore Cusco s shops and streets before boarding a late afternoon flight back to Lima, arriving around 6:30 p.m. Enjoy a leisurely check-in and a light meal before the overnight flight to Newark, arriving early Friday morning, May 31.
