Jackson County Historical Society News volume twenty, number four September 2013 The Jackson County Historical Society will meet for a Hot Dog Picnic on September 12, 2013, at 6:30 p. m., at the Pat Bell Conference Center 7020 Hwy 82, Maysville GA 30558, off of Hwy 82 Spur between the two entrances to Hurricane Shoals Park. After refreshments there will be a tour of the Heritage Village. The newest addition to the Village is the Cross Roads School recently moved from the Nicholson Community where it had served as the African American school house as early as 1881. The lean-to building served as the blacksmith shed with the open side used for the fire. Corn Crib was built in the late 1800 s on the Robert Tuck Venable Farm in the Brockton Community. 2

Freeman Log Cabin is a dogtrot (open hallway between two rooms) originally located on highway 335 east of Nicholson. Hayden Jubal David, bought the property from his mother in 1836. David and a slave built the tworoom structure circa 1840. Privy built circa 1900 and was located on the A. Luther and Bertha Harris Freeman Dairy Farm in Galilee Community. 3

Tool Shed with Corn Crib was built circa 1900, originally located on the A. Luther and Bertha Harris Freeman Dairy Farm on Gallilee Church Rd in Jefferson. The corn was stored and used for animal feed and ground into cornmeal. Smoke House with Wagon Shelter was built circa 1900 and originally located on the A. Luther and Bertha Harris Freeman Dairy farm on Galilee Church Rd in Jefferson. Meats would be smoked and hung to cure in the barn. 4

The Miles Wilson Mathews Chapel was originally the Center Presbyterian Church organized in 1891 by Rev. Mack, Ida Daily, Mrs. Chandler, G. W. Barber, W. L. Barber, and J. T. Brown. Ida Daily was the third wife of Dan Matthews and step mother to Miles Wilson Matthews. Originally located on Highway 441, North of Center. 5

James Wood Cabin was built circa 1800 with the help of James father Reverend Henry Wood. In 1814, James married Mariah Porter and eleven children were born in the cabin. James Theo Wood lived in the cabin until his death in 1996. Caleb Wood lived 3 miles northeast of Harmony Grove and gave land to his 4 sons. Jesse P. Wood received a tract on State Street and built this small structure circa 1800. Log Barn was built circa 1800 on the Johnson farm in the Thyatira community Harrisburg courthouse was built circa 1809 originally located off Highway 15 in Thyatira community, when the land was donated by John White. It served as the polling place until 1980. 6

The Elijah Albright Veal log cabin was built circa 1832 in the Cooper Community. He married Virginia Elizabeth Kidd in 1838. Their 14 children were born in the cabin. Corn Crib circa 1900 was located in Apple Valley on the Morgan Nix Farm. 7

Jackson County Historical Society P.O. Box 1234 Commerce, Georgia 30529 Crossroads School House was an African American school located in Nicholson, as early as 1881.
