MISS MADERA COUNTY PAGEANT The Board of Directors of the Chowchilla-Madera County Fair and Event Center is pleased to announce that applications are being accepted for the MISS MADERA COUNTY PAGEANT to be held as part of the Chowchilla-Madera County Fair in Chowchilla. A maximum of eight (8) participants. The MISS MADERA COUNTY PAGEANT is for females only. Applications must be submitted to the Chowchilla-Madera County Fairgrounds Office by 5:00 p.m. on Friday April 13, 2018. The Pageant will be held on, Thursday, May 17, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. at the Chowchilla-Madera County Fairgrounds. The pageant winners, Miss Madera County and Runner-Up, will be selected by an impartial panel of judges. Contestants will be evaluated on the categories listed below. The pageant show changes each year and contestants may be required to participate in an opening dance number or other event activities. The Director(s) reserves the right to make changes as necessary. The contestants will be evaluated in the following categories: Scholastic Achievement Community Involvement Poise and Appearance Personal Interview Evening Gown Presentation Response to a Judges Panel Question INDIVIDUAL TALENT PARTICIPATION IS OPTIONAL. Talent is a separate category and will be judged on its own merit separate from the pageant judging categories and will be given a separate award. Pageant winners will receive the following: Miss Madera County $ 1,000.00 First Runner-Up $ 500.00 Miss Congeniality Award Most Sold Raffle Tickets Award Most Sold Partnerships Award The Miss Madera County Pageant winner and Runner-Up will be obligated to participate in the Chowchilla Spring Festival parade on Saturday, May 19th. In the event that the selected Miss Madera County is unable to fulfill her reign for the year following her appointment the Runner-Up will replace and hereafter represent the term of Miss Madera County. Winners of the Miss Madera County Pageant will be required to be present daily at the Chowchilla-Madera County Fair, and other community events that may be scheduled throughout the year in Madera County. All appearances will be approved by the Miss Madera County coordinator.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS A completed Miss Madera County Pageant application must be received in the Chowchilla-Madera County Fairgrounds office by 5:00 p.m. on April 13, 2018. (NO POSTMARKED APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED) Contestants must be between the ages of 16 and 20 years as determined by their age on May 17, 2018. A copy of the applicant s birth certificate or driver s license MUST be attached to the application. A copy of an official grades transcript from your school must be submitted along with the application. School graduates must submit a transcript of their final grades at graduation. If contestant is enrolled in a training program proof of registration is required. Contestants must have resided in Madera County for at least six (6) months prior to the date of the pageant (proof of residence may be required). Contestants must never have been married, nor have had a marriage annulled, nor be pregnant, nor have given birth to a child, including through the year following appointment as Miss Madera County. No contestant shall have won a prior Miss Madera County Pageant, nor have been a professional model, nor have appeared professionally on TV, radio or in print of any form for professional compensation. Having won another amateur contest for awards does not exclude a participant. Contestants must be knowledgeable of current events of their county and state. Applicants will need to submit three (1) letter of recommendation from your attended school, club, community leader, and/or job. All letters of recommendation will be subject to verification of authenticity. Specific dress attire will be discussed during the orientation session. It is important that the Miss Madera County Pageant contestants attend all rehearsals and be on time. Pageant meetings and rehearsal dates and times may be subject to change. Contestants must provide a 5 x 7 headshot with application. Contestants will be required to sell a minimum of $500.00 of Royalty raffle tickets or Fair Partnerships. Proceeds to be used toward pageant scholarships and Fair. Contestant to provide a one-page biography along with their application as well. The contestant agrees to defend, indemnify and hold harmless the fair, the county and the State of California from and against any liability, claim, loss or expense (including reasonable attorneys fees) arising out of any injury or damage which is caused by, arises from or is in any way connected with participation in the program or event, excepting only that caused by the sole active negligence of the Fair. The Fair Management shall not be responsible for accidents or losses that may occur to any of the exhibitors or exhibits at the fair. The exhibitor (or parent or guardian of a minor) is responsible for any injury or damage resulting from the exhibitor s participation in the program or event. This includes any injury to others or to the exhibitor or to the exhibitor s property. MISS MADERA COUNTY PAGEANT CODE OF ETHICS The Miss Madera County Pageant Volunteer Director(s) and the Chowchilla-Madera County Fair staff are prepared to guide you through a rewarding pageant experience. There are certain basic expectations of all contestants related to conduct, dress, appearance, personal cleanliness, language and consideration of your fellow contestants. The intent is not to interfere with personal lives of contestants, but rather to insure a pleasant and constructive experience for all. GOALS AND INTENT I shall endeavor to understand and faithfully interpret the Chowchilla-Madera County Fair Contest philosophy, objectives, and goals in my relationship with fellow contestants, management, volunteers, staff and the public. I shall conduct myself in an exemplary manner recognizing that I am a role model for my peers and my community. By my behavior, I will always try to demonstrate high moral values. I recognize that my conduct when I am away from the Fair premises also reflects on the Chowchilla-Madera County Fair. I shall always seek to be truthful, honest and fair in my communication and interaction with contestants, management, staff and volunteers. I accept the challenge of helping my community increase their awareness of the Chowchilla-Madera County Fair and agricultural industries. I shall refrain from the use of alcoholic beverages, illegal narcotics and non-prescription drugs as all are prohibited and use of such will result in my disqualification from the contest. I shall accept and adhere to the schedule set forth by the contest staff and volunteers unless pre-approved. I shall present all clothing that is to be worn during the Contest and Fair Functions to the Pageant Director(s) for approval. Such clothing shall not be altered in any manner at a later time so as to amend the length, fit or style of the garment. I shall accept the decision of the Judges as final. The Chowchilla-Madera County Fair staff and Pageant Director(s) reserve the right to enforce all Rules, Regulations and Code of Ethics and the right to disqualify or forfeit title and awards of contest winners with the discretion for review and final decisions by the management of the Chowchilla-Madera County Fair and/or the Board of Directors. 1. Personality Interview: In this phase of competition, the judges meet with each of the Candidates in an informal interview. At this time, the judges evaluate the Candidate s performance in response to a variety of questions. The Candidate s knowledge perception, mental alertness and awareness of current events are evaluated. Articulation and self-expression are carefully reviewed. This area of competition provides an opportunity for the judges to focus upon the Candidates attitudes, future goals and aspiration and that number one quality so important in life, personality. Personal appearance and grooming habits provide the judges with a greater insight relative to the Candidates ability to assume the position of Miss Madera County. 2. Communications Skills: In the Communication Skills competition, the Candidate is to provide a 30 second Commercial Spot to advertise and draw patrons to this year s Chowchilla Madera County Fair. The winning candidate s commercial may be used in this year s fair promotions on the radio and/or television spots as the Board of Directors determines is appropriate. During the presentation, the judges evaluate the Candidate s articulation, manner of presentation, grammar, confidence, mental alertness and creativity. Each candidate will also be asked an impromptu question as part of this phase of competition. The question may be related to the theme of this year s fair, current events and/or the agricultural industry but will not be rehearsed with the candidates. 3. Scholastic Achievement: In this phase of the competition, each candidate will submit a certified copy of their transcript, in a sealed official envelope, from the school that they are currently attending. The candidates will also list any education awards or achievements they have attained prior to the pageant. 4. Poise and Appearance: This phase of the competition is judged simultaneously with all other phases. During the entirety of the pageant, the judges will evaluate the Candidate s manner of presentation, grammar, confidence, and mental alertness. Overall appearance relative to the Candidate s potential as a community ambassador and public relations specialist for the Chowchilla-Madera County Fair will be evaluated during all phases of the competition. 5. Community Involvement: In this phase of the competition, each candidate will list and detail their involvement in community service activities. The judges will review this information and evaluate the candidates not only on the number of community service projects they participate in, but also on the depth of their participation in each project.
