DRONES UP Course Program Eig-Watson School of Aviation
DRONES UP A UNIQUE FLYING EXPERIENCE Drones Up is a unique Miami Dade College non-credit course that combines the latest drone flight information and regulations with live flight experiences. This course has been designed to give students a real life experience into the world of drone technology.
COURSE DESCRIPTION This course provides an introduction to Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs) and the operation of UASs within our current airspace. The course provides a history of UASs from their use in military flight operations, to their transition into civilian use. The course analyzes the impact of UAS s in the civilian world and a review of the new regulatory procedures that applies to UAS operations. The course will cover topics for ground training certifications of UAS equipment, operators and organizations utilizing UAS s for governmental and nongovernmental purposes. In addition, the course will introduce a series of actual simulation training exercises to include an obstacle course using UAS s. UAS live flights will be conducted in a netted indoor and outdoor environment under strict supervision as part of the training.
COURSE OVERVIEW Informational The initial part of the Course will provide an in-depth presentation about aeronautical flight information and the latest federal and state statutes and regulations. Flight Proficiency This segment of the Course will provide students with the opportunity for live flight training from beginner pilots training, to high levels of proficiency flight. Obstacle courses and team competitions have been integrated into the Course to enable students to achieve a higher level of flight proficiency. Industry Challenge This segment of the Course will provide an in-depth overview of the methodologies and functions which various industries and governmental entities have integrated drones into their current business practices. Students will have the opportunity to participate in industry challenges as part of the Course.
INFORMATIONAL SEGMENT APRIL 2 nd and 9 th These classes are offered in lecture format and will be held at the Wolfson Campus (Idea Center). Materials covered during these two sessions will include: CLASS 1. History of UAS s from beginnings to the present. UAS s operations from both the civilian and military aspects. FAA proposed regulations and certifications relating to UAS s in the civilian world. FAA proposed regulations and certifications for an applicant who intends to operate UAS in urban or rural areas. The course content is composed of basic and advanced aerodynamics, general systems and components, load factors, flight controls, weight and balance and instrumentations that applies to UASs. Manual or computerized control of UAS from the ground. UAS usage for civilian purpose in the private sector like agriculture, industrial and manufacturing organizations. UAS usage for governmental purpose in the public sector like police, fire rescue, first responders and critical incidents. Deployment of UAS in a controlled environment rural/non rural areas UAS checklist for startup, takeoff, enroute, departure, landing and shutdown procedures. CLASS 2. UAS operation in the National Airspace System (NAS) Operations at outside rural areas Classification of current ICAO Airspace FAA guidelines pertaining to observers/spotters when operating UAS in the NAS General systems and components of UAS aircrafts Control systems, ground control station (GCS) Control links, flight control systems, ground tests, calibration of UAS
FLIGHT PROFICIENCY SEGMENT APRIL 16 th, 23 rd, and 30 th This segment of the Course will focus on the opportunity to learn how to fly a drone. These classes will train the students to fly a drone, utilizing a combination of training drones and the more sophisticated phantom models. The second class will allow the student to enhance their flying skills by maneuvering their drones through obstacle courses. The third class in this segment will concentrate on increasing the flight proficiency and skills, by creating competitive flying events. CLASS 1. UAS Basic Maneuvers Pitch control by performing vertical takeoff and landing, hover, and taxi Roll control by maintaining a series of longitudinal turns (left/right) Yaw control by maintaining a series of vertical turns (sideway left/right) Vertical/longitudinal flight from a hover and landing CLASS 2. UAS Safe Flight Operations and Proficiency Flying UAS through obstacle course Standing horizontal/vertical bars Standing loop Circular tubes Multiple obstacle bars Standing rectangular/circular pads CLASS 3. UAS Flight Competition Individual and team Timed events Accuracy challenges
INDUSTRY CHALLENGES SEGMENT MAY 7 th, 14 th, and 21 st This segment of the course will review the use of drones in the following industries: agriculture, government, and commercial operations. This segment will review the most current uses for drones in each of these industries. This segment will also feature industry challenges which will allow students the opportunity to participate in designed exercises to mimic real-life challenges for the use of drones in today s industries. Upon completion of the Course, Miami Dade College will issue certificates of completion and flight proficiency. I. MAY 7 th Agriculture II. MAY 14 th Government III. MAY 21 th - Commercial
