Turkey - Cycling the Lycian Coast by Bike and Boat Tour 2019 Guided or Individual Self-Guided 8 days / 7 nights We spend a week discovering the Lycian coast from Marmaris to Fethiye with the three masted motor yacht Bahriyeli. Our charming and stylish swimming accommodation is built to the highest of standards. We get to know the Turkish coast and back country with the aid of a bike. Our tour guide points out the unique natural wonders and historical cities which grace the area, allowing us to be transported back in time. Admire the famous rock cut tombs of Dalyan, which were carved into stone between 4 and 2 B.C. by the Lycian coastal inhabitants, or let yourself be mesmerized by the breathtaking Saklikent Canyon. Spend your evenings in the deserted bays and let yourself be rocked to sleep by the ocean or make the most of the pulsating night life in the port cities and their many cafes and bars.
Itinerary Day to Day Day 1: Marmaris arrival Individual arrival by plane to Dalaman or Bodrum airport and transfer to Bodrum (approximately 1.5 hours and respectively 2 hours). Check-in on board starts at 2 p.m. Take the afternoon to stroll through the lively and oriental old town. The journey begins with dinner, where everybody gets together. Day 2: Marmaris Sarsala 35 km Ship ahoy! A two hour cruise brings us to a picturesque swimming bay. From here we cycle over a 250 meter high pass before we reach the plain of Dalaman. Today s destination is Sarsala, a quiet bay, where we stay overnight. Day 3: Sarsala - Tethiye 35 km After breakfast we cross to Gemiler Bay, passing many small islands on the way. We cycle through a pine forest until we reach the uninhabited (since 1922) Greek city of Kayaköy, which was once home to some 6,500 inhabitants. Afterwards our bike tour leads us to the lagoon of Ölüdeniz a gem you should not miss comparable with the Golden Horn on Brač Island (Croatia). Join your tour guide on an appealing but challenging ride back to your ship or get picked up by a bus that is taking you to the boat waiting in the lively town of Fethiye. Day 4: Fethiye - Gocek 30 km A bus transfer (60 minutes) takes us to Cavdir, the starting point of today s cycling tour. From here we bike to the Saklikent Canyon, where we can enjoy lunch at the river bank. In Turkish Saklikent means Hidden City. The canyon is spectacular and can be easily explored on foot. Afterwards we continue our cycling to the ancient town of Tlos which has been one of the largest towns in Lycia. After an inspiring visit a transfer takes us to Fethiye. Back at the harbour the Bahriyeli brings us to Göcek, where we spend the night.
Day 5: Gocek - Dalyan 40 km From Göcek due to its important marina it is one of the most significant places of tourism along the Turkish south coast we bike over a 350 meter high pass, enjoying panoramic views. Afterwards we cross a pine forest before we cycle along a quiet minor road down to the Dalaman plain, through fertile fields and lush vegetation to Dalyan. From here a small boat takes us down the river passing the impressive Lycian rock cut tombs of Dalyan to the Bahriyeli, where we stay overnight. Day 6: Kaunos - Ekincik 32 km In the morning once more a small boat picks us up and takes us to the ancient city Kaunos which is certainly worth a visit. In former times situated next to the sea it s silt up nowadays. Only some ruins recall wealthy times. After a brief visit we continue cycling along the Köycegiz Lake until we reach the thermal baths that invite us to a healing bath. After a 350 meter climb we arrive at the little village of Ekincik, where we spend the night. Day 7: Ekincik - Marmaris 55 km After a two hour crossing we arrive at the Bozborun Peninsula. On our last bike ride we take a lonely mountain road in order to get to a cute mountain village with its 1500 year old trees. After a spectacular descent down to Icmeler s coastal road our cycling tour finally leads us to Marmaris, where the boat already awaits us with a delicious dinner. The last evening aboard takes place traditionally and includes the communal dinner and a last get together in a cozy atmosphere with crew and tour guides. Day 8: Marmaris departure After breakfast check out. On request collective transfer to the airport and individual return home or extended stay in Turkey.
Route Technical Characteristics: Route Profile: Moderate. The day tours average 40 km and take you through partly hilly and mountainous terrain. There will also be extended climbs where walking your bike is of course permitted. Most of the roads are asphalted. You can set aside a whole or half day for swimming or relaxing on board the boat whenever you want. Helmet use is mandatory on all bike tours. You are strongly encouraged to bring your own (well-fitted) helmet. Bike helmets are available on board in limited number (on request).
