NILIMAR Ships Sale & Purchase MARKET REPORT WEEK 35 BASED ON SALES AND PURCHASES OF VESSELS WEEK ENDED FRIDAY 30 TH AUGUST 2013. The BDI saw a minimal -3% decline last week caused by the BCI reversing its +27% gain of the proceeding 2 weeks into a small -3% loss. Meanwhile the other 3 dry indices basically remained on holiday, each making gains of less than +1% w-o-w. The dry cargo market remains fundamentally 'flat'. Though both wet and dry freight markets remain uninspired, second hand S+P activity continued at a steady pace last week as it has done throughout the summer. Strong ordering of newbuildings also continues to feature and whilst we understand that Japanese and Korean yards have mainly enjoyed high levels of enquiry and concluded contracts, albeit many concluded in the past 24 months or so at below or close to cost price, such business will ensure the continued existence of said yards. It appears however that several major Chinese yards have not fared so well in this severe market slump the reasons in our opinion being two fold; first because even though they would have entered the downturn with strong order books for vessels contracted at very high prices, too many Chinese yards remain unable to deliver vessels to spec and on time, thereby giving buyers the ability to legally cancel and the yards having to 'resell' elsewhere at much lower prevailing market levels. The second reason is because given the choice most buyers still prefer to order in Japan or Korea for reasons of better quality product and the ability of such yards to be able to deliver as per contract. The demolition markets are witnessing quite a change in fortunes at the moment. The sub continent is in total disarray due to the Rupee in India and Pakistan falling even lower (India saw it reach 69 against the dollar last week - and it hadn't EVER gone below 62 up until only 2 weeks ago). There is also a strike in Bangladesh in protest of the falling local steel prices there. Accordingly sub continent end buyers remain basically closed for business we suspect until such time as their currencies and local steel prices stabilise. Meanwhile China is resurgent and we hear is maybe even offering levels in line with theoretical sub continent levels for desirable tonnage which is suitably positioned. Only one month ago China demolition buyers were basically closed whilst the sub-continent recyclers were hungry - how quickly things can change in shipping, and indeed if the West do eventually send cruise missiles into Syria one has to wonder (and worry) what knock on effects that might have throughout the middle east especially, and also upon shipping! 1
