April 2013 Interurban Tour Planned by Jon Shea Tour planned for Saturday, April 20, 2013, 9am 3pm. Robert Haynes and Interurban Railway Musuem sent us news of a Interurban Tour planned for spring. Please send me an e-mail if you want to go so I can get Robert a head count. As he says below, North Texas Chapter members need to sign up if possible prior to the Plano Train show. If you know any member who is not on the distribution list please let them know. Details and how to pay information will follow later. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Jon. News from Robert Haynes - Happy Holidays to you. We are planning to recruit and take reservations for the Interurban Tour in April of next year. At the NRHS Banquet many members expressed an interest in participating. Could you poll your group and perhaps give us an idea of how many slots to hold out for the members. We expect that the cost will be about $40.00. We don't want it to sell out at the Railroad show and not have any of our 'rail fans' be able join in the experience. Thanks, and best wishes. Robert Haynes, Curator. Interurban Railway Museum Chapter Views and Rail News Ballot Box Bios Meet the candidates for office for this, your NRHS Chapter. President, Wayne Smith - have served four years as president of the North Texas Chapter of the National Railroad Historical Society. I served on the convention committee as Volunteer Coordinator when we hosted the NRHS national convention in 2008 and several national publications labeled our convention as one of the best in several years. I have also served on other committees in the past and as Nominations Chair as well. Our chapter has won first place for the last few years as sponsoring the best annual rail event in a five state area through Cowcatcher Magazine. Since I have become president, we established The LeRoy O. King Railway Heritage Preservation Grant. My father (Fort Worth & Denver) and grandfather (Rock Island) both worked for the railroad and I spent many hours around rail yards and rail facilities as a kid. We used to put pennies on the tracks and gathered them after the switchers went by. Of course, all of that is illegal now. Anyway, my mother is from Canada and as a kid we would use my dad s pass and travel by train from Texas into various parts of Canada to see my relatives. I am a member of multiple railroad and model railroad organizations. I built a model railroad layout at home and collect every scale that is commercially available. I am also a certified Railroad Merit Badge Counselor for the Boy Scouts I use to have a side business as a dealer and sold both model trains and accessories as well as railroad memorabilia. I would be happy to serve as president for a 5th term. Jim King, Treasurer - I graduated from UT Austin in 1978 and moved to Dallas where I began working (and still do!) as an engineer in the defense industry. From 1997 through 2002, I was the Editor of Clearance Card, the quarterly journal of the Southwest Railroad Historical Society, and from 1998 through 2002, I was the Editor of Stack Talk, the newsletter of the Age of Steam Museum. I joined NTX chapter in late Next issue news deadline: January 19, 2013 Send to NTX.News@Yahoo.com Page 2

2006 and knew Skip, Jon and others from previous association at SRHS/Age of Steam. At Skip's request, I became the Vice Chairman of Lone Star Rails 2008. Due to her work as a consultant to the Ft. Worth Convention & Visitor's Bureau, my wife Terry took the lead in negotiating our hotel contract for the convention, and managing our hotel and banquet activities. After the convention, the position of Treasurer came open, I volunteered to take the position on assignment from the Board, and have run for re-election each year since then. Dave Gramm, Secretary - My name is Dave Gramm, #55210, and I have been a member of the N. TX chapter of the NRHS since 2006. I have served as the chapter secretary for the past 3 years and am willing to continue in this capacity if re-elected. I am 62 years old, retired computer hardware engineer and currently work as custodian at my church. I joined the chapter to meet with other like-minded railroad enthusiasts and to expand my limited knowledge of train history. I grew up with trains running in my back yard but never paid much attention to them until later in life. Now I want to experience their early history before it disappears along with the people who are from that era. I have made many new friends and learned more than imaginable. As Secretary, I am trying to give back to the chapter my talents in exchange for the knowledge I have gained. Skip Waters, VP Trips/Events - I have liked trains all my life. My dad got me hooked as soon as I could push one across the floor. I became hooked on real trains when I saw the American Freedom Train in New Orleans and I became a steam chaser in college when UP 844 steamed home from the Louisiana World's Fair. After that I've been solid fan and student of railroads and railfanning. It would be my pleasure to serve another term as your V.P. of Trips and Events for our chapter. I look forward to doing more events in 2013. Jon Shea, VP Programs - I have served as Vice-President Programs since 2006. I also served as treasurer for Lone Star Rails 2008. Also I helped Skip plan our 2008 Texas Electric Railroad excursion and hope to help in his future trips. Previously, I served several years as the Program Committee Chairman for the former Southwest Railroad Historical Society/Age of Steam Museum. One of my goals is to increase our contacts with other groups and individuals in the Metroplex. This is good for our group and allows for a variety of meeting places and topics. Among our friends are The DeGolyer Library at SMU, the Plano Interurban Museum and the T&P Tavern in Fort Worth. We are always looking for new program ideas and meeting places and any suggestions are always welcome. My interests are mainly railroad history and historic railroads, mainly in Texas but also narrow guage railroading in the Rocky Mountains, the Transcontinental Railroad and Civil War Railroads. Valli Hoski, VP Communications Late blooming railfan, grew in Detroit close to the NY Central tracks, not far from the aptly name Junction Street. I rode city buses to school and for family visits, but the street cars were long gone by my early childhood. Then, for some serendipitous reason, I decided that a Lionel model train would be a great Christmas present for my 19 th birthday. My earliest rail trip memories are riding VIA from Windsor to Oshawa with high school friends to visit their Canadian family. My active love of prototypes started in 80s Chicago, when started my career and became a real railfan. Chicago El, commuter rail, CTA buses, all were (and are) a marvelous playground to this day. Rode Amtrak s Midwestern corridor with its Turboliners between my Chicago life and southeastern Michigan family visits. My best railfan memories are of the Electo-Liner s 25 th final run anniversary at the Illinois Railway Museum, then riding behind the restored NS J611 on her mid-1980s Chicago/Fort Wayne excursions. In the late 80s, riding the venerable FS (Ferrovia Statale in Italy) and Swiss railroads followed while working and living in northern Italy. Back in the US in the early 1990s, working in Detroit, discovering the NRHS, Bluewater Chapter and its marvelous excursions. Back onboard as a carhost and volunteer comm crew, NS J611 Steam excursions were lovely during their Midwest heyday. In 1992, a change of job took me to Dallas, the Age of Steam railfans and volunteering on the UP excursion that summer. As the North Texas Chapter began, as a charter member I was back in my NRHS home. Editor since mid-2003 most members are familiar with my writing, sotimes pun-filled humor. It s a great pleasure to get news, views, rail tales into print and in the hands of the membership. Lone Star Rails 2008 provided my finest, best adventures with the Chapter planning and coordinating the rail history and preservation programs, followed by Harry and I serving as car hosts on the 2008 Quanah Zephyr excursion on the BNSF mainline. I remain loyally yours, North Texas Chapter member, newsletter editor, if elected, VP Comm. in 2013. More information will be forthcoming as received or contact Robert at roberthaynes1959@yahoo.com directly. President Wayne passed out copies of a railroad terms matching puzzle for the group s entertainment. Prizes were handed out for the top 5 entries with the most number of correct matches including several gimme hats and other goodies. One of our members (A.J. Roquevert) shot video during our Texas Joyride on Amtrak on October 7, 2012 and made a DVD. He had copies made and handed out a copy to each member in attendance who participated in the ride. Extra copies will be available at the January meeting for $6 to cover the cost of the DVD media. The video will also be shown as part of the evening s program during Show-n-Tell. Skip also handed out TRE squeeze car replicas and calendars from the Central Arkansas Transit River Rail electric streetcar in Little Rock to all. Happy Holidays to all! See you in 2013!
