1. How to get to León León is the capital of León s Spanish province. It belongs to the region Comunidad Autónoma de Castilla y León. The city is situated on the North-West part of the Iberian Peninsula, having borders with the region of Asturias and Cantabria, on the north; the Galician provinces of Orense and Lugo, on the West; the provinces of Zamora and Valladolid, on the South; and the province of Palencia, on the East. León is an intermediate point between important regions from the Iberian Peninsula. Two main routes go through León and its province; from South to North, the Vía de la Plata; and from East to West, the pilgrimage to Santiago. From Europe, you can reach León mainly by airplane and train. AIRPLANE: León has an airport (code LEN) situated 6 km from the city, in the air base of La Virgen del Camino. The airport has only one regular connection with Barcelona with Air Nostrum regional airline (that belongs to Iberia). 2. Accommodation Local organisers have selected three hotels from the same city area to host the workshop participants. Transport to and from the workshop venue will be provided by the organisation. All these hotels are within walking distance to the city centre (10 walk). Types of available rooms and prices are included below. León Renfe train station is just 1.5km from the hotels (15 walk or less than 5 by taxi, Price around 5-7 ). Airport is 6km away, regular buses will take you to Jardín de San Francisco; from there a 5 walk will take you to the hotels. A taxi ride from the airport to any of the hotels will cost around 15. A bus will be ready at 8:15a.m. on Tuesday 15 th January at the taxi-bus stop located in front of El Corte Inglés on Fray Luis de León Street (see map) within walking distance from the three hotels. The bus will take the attendees back to the city once the meeting is finished. 11
4. Tourism Activities LEON CATHEDRAL One of the most beautiful cathedrals in Spain, it is undoubtedly the city s landmark, whose history starts in the 10th century. It is widely known for its 130 church windows and three rose windows, the true jewels of the temple. (León) CASA DE BOTINES One of the three Antonio Gaudi s works outside Cataluña, the Casa de Botines is a neogothic-style building constructed between 1891 and 1894 with modernist influences. One of the most important Romanesque work of art where we underline the frescoes on stuccowork with hardly a thousand years old and, all of this situated right in the heart of the city of León. Address: Plaza San Isidoro, 4 24003 PARADOR DE SAN MARCOS An old convent, today it is operating as luxury parador hotel, although currently not available due to major renovation works. It also contains a consecrated church and museum, and is one of the most important monuments of the Renaissance in Spain. It is one of the greatest architectural jewels of León, together with the Cathedral, the Basilica of San Isidoro and la Casa Botines. It has a highly ornamental plateresque facade.
