Registration: Monday between 8:15-8:30 am. Please arrive on time. (Please do not arrive before 8:15.) Daily Program: Monday-Thursday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm and Friday, 8:30 am to 2:00 pm. It s important that all participants stay until 2 pm on Friday. Please plan your travel carefully so you do not need to leave before then. DIRECTIONS The Institute for Humane Education (IHE) is located on the Surry Road (Route 172), between Ellsworth and Blue Hill. IHE is approximately 4 miles from Ellsworth and 10 miles from Blue Hill. From Ellsworth: Leave Ellsworth on Main Street toward Blue Hill, taking Route 172 that veers to the left just past the bridge from town (Route 1 toward Bucksport veers to the right). IHE will be on the left side of the road. From Blue Hill: Take Rt. 172 toward Ellsworth. IHE is on the right side of the road, 2.5 miles from Surry village. We have a tall blue sign with our logo easily seen from the road. 1

TRANSPORTATION Please feel free to contact us if you need any help sorting out the best way to get to the Institute. Contact us if you would like assistance navigating through the travel options: info@humaneeducation.org or (207) 667-1025. Airports: Bangor International Airport (www.flybangor.com), Bangor, Maine (37 miles away) Hancock County Bar Harbor Airport (www.bhbairport.com), Bar Harbor, Maine (15 miles away) Portland International Jetport (www.portlandjetport.org), Portland, Maine (163 miles away) Manchester Boston Regional Airport (www.flymanchester.com), Manchester, New Hampshire (185 miles away) Boston Logan International Airport (http://www.massport.com/logan/default.aspx), Boston, Massachusetts (260 miles away) Bus Stations: Concord Trailways (www.concordtrailways.com): (800) 639-3317; local number: (207) 945-4000 Greyhound Lines (www.greyhound.com): (800) 229-9424; local number: (207) 945-3000 Concord Trailways and Greyhound bus lines travel directly from Logan Airport to Bangor, Maine. The Concord Trailways bus station is not far from the airport in Bangor, and the Greyhound bus station is several miles away in the city of Bangor. During summer months the Greyhound bus goes all the way to Bar Harbor, with a stop in Ellsworth, which is a 10-minute drive to Surry. Additionally, Concord Trailways travels from a bus station in Portland to Bangor (the bus station is a 10-minute taxi ride away from the jetport in Portland). Train: The closest train station, Amtrak (www.amtrak.com), is in Portland, three hours from Surry. You can take a bus from the Amtrak station in Portland to Bangor or Ellsworth. Ground Transportation: Cars can be rented at all of the airports listed above. The Bangor Airport has taxi service to the Ellsworth/Surry area. Single taxi rides cost approximately $75 plus tip through Rickshaw Taxi Service: 207 285-0500, mike@rickshawtaxiservice.com. We highly recommend that students share a rental car in order to split the cost and save fuel. Having at least one car per five people is essential as there is no public transportion. LODGING Guesthouse: For those wishing to stay on campus during Residency with fellow students, we offer lodging on campus in our guesthouse. The guesthouse is situated on IHE's 28 oceanfront acres with beautiful woods, trails to the ocean, and a spring fed pond. Frequently seen are deer, seals, foxes, bald eagles, loons, ospreys, frogs, lightning bugs, turkeys and more. 2

The guesthouse includes two large rooms, one for men and one for women, a common area, and one shared bathroom. The men s room has sleeping space for six people in three bunk beds and the women s room has sleeping space for eight in four bunk beds. The guesthouse offers convenient, affordable, and simple "camp-like" accommodations with electricity, and linens, a blanket and a towel provided (there is no housekeeping during the week). There s a small kitchen area in the common area of the guest house as well that has a small refrigerator, toaster oven, and coffee maker. For photos please visit: http://www.flickr.com/photos/instituteforhumaneeducation/sets/72157630500211144/ Cost: $45/day/person. Light breakfast, including bagel or toast with spread, fruit, and coffee and tea, is included. Space is limited. Secure your space ASAP! Register online here: http://www.eventbrite.com/event/5320445596# On-campus camping: We also invite people to camp in the field or woods near the guest house, with access to the guest house bathroom. Cost: $20/day/tent. No supplies provided. Light breakfast including bagel or toast with spread, fruit, and coffee and tea is included. Register online here: http://www.eventbrite.com/event/5320445596# Check-in: Please plan your travel so that you arrive at the guesthouse between noon-5 p.m. If you are unable to arrive within this time frame, please contact info@humaneeducation.org 207 667-1025. It is possible to accommodate arrivals only up to 10 p.m. Should your arrival be later than 10 p.m., we ask that you stay elsewhere (see below for motels near the Bangor Airport) and come to IHE in the morning. [NOTE: Even if you are staying on campus, a car per five people is still essential, as dinner is not provided and area groceries and restaurants are a minimum of 5 miles away.) Motels: Over the years, many students have stayed at the Twilite Motel in Ellsworth and were happy with their accommodations. The Twilite is a family-owned and operated motel, approximately 4 miles from IHE. We have been offered a 15% discount on the usual seasonal rate of $83 to $104 (+7% tax) for double occupancy rooms. Visit their website: www.twilitemotel.com to view their rooms and amenities. The Twilite will offer the special rates only with phone reservations and in accordance with their cancellation policy (noon 72 hours prior to day of arrival). Please call (800) 395-5097 and speak with the proprietors directly to inform them that you are a student at IHE. They are unable to offer the special 15% discount for IHE students if you book online. For those traveling with their animal companions, the Twilite has a limited number of rooms available for guests with small dogs for an additional small fee. Next door to the Twilite motel is the Homestead Motel, another family-owned and operated motel. This motel is smaller, and slightly less expensive. There are cottages available, and some rooms have refrigerators and microwaves. Rates at the Homestead range from about $64 to $90 per night and a 10% discount is normally given to IHE students. Visit their website: www.homesteadmaine.com to view their rooms and get additional information. It is best to make your reservation by phone: (207) 667-8193, so that you can inform them that 3

you re an IHE student. If you book online, email the Homestead and let them know you are an IHE student, in order to obtain the discount. Both motels offer modest continental breakfasts. Cabins: A few students in past years have booked cabins at Cedar Cabins, which is approximately 10 miles from Surry. Find out more: www.cedarcabins.com. Inns: During the summer tourist season, inns are a popular option for many vacationers and are often more expensive than hotels. Please consult the Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce, www.ellsworthchamber.org, for additional lodging options. Bangor Motels near the Airport: In the event that your flight is delayed and you arrive at the Bangor Airport late at night and need accommodations, here are motels that provide shuttle service from the airport. FOOD Super 8 Bangor 462 Odlin Rd., Bangor, ME 04401 (207) 945-5681 Rates starting at $58 per night Econolodge Bangor 327 Odlin Rd., Bangor, ME 04401 (207) 945-0111 Rates starting at $79 per night The Four Points Hotel 308 Godfrey Blvd., Bangor, ME 04401 (207) 947-6721 Convenient location at the airport, but more expensive at $125-200 per night During the week of the Residency, we offer students delicious vegan lunches, snacks, and coffee, tea, and water throughout the day. The cost of food is not included in tuition for IHE grad students and can be paid for by cash, check, or credit card. IHE will let students know ahead of time the cost of lunch and snacks. The food is mostly organic, and locally grown when possible. We make every attempt to provide lunches hearty enough to satisfy all appetites. If you have any dietary restrictions, allergies, or concerns, please email us at info@humaneeducation.org and we will do our best to accommodate you. Students are on their own for dinner. Faculty and staff regularly join groups of students for dinner at area restaurants in Ellsworth, Blue Hill, and Bar Harbor. At the bottom of this document is a list of area restaurant recommendations and local grocery and health food stores. WHAT TO BRING IHE is situated on 28 oceanfront acres, with wooded trails to a pebble beach. We ll plan to hold some sessions and activities outdoors (weather permitting), so please dress comfortably, 4

casually, and in layers. Don t forget a rain jacket! Maine weather is very unpredictable. We could have beautiful, warm weather, or cool, rainy weather, or both within the span of a single day. If you would like to visit Acadia National Park (a 40-minute drive ) or Blue Hill Mountain (15-minute drive), bring hiking shoes or sneakers. Institute faculty often lead a hike up a mountain in Acadia the day after Residency, and it also will be light enough outside in the evening for a short visit to the park during the week itself. We highly recommend taking advantage of the natural beauty while you are here! If you re inclined to swim in the ocean or pond, please bring a bathing suit and towel. Please bring the following: - Sunscreen - Reusable water bottle - Cloth napkin for your personal use throughout the week (we will have paper napkins, but in the interests of minimizing waste, we invite you to bring your own napkin) - Day pack (for going to Acadia or other hikes) - Flashlight (if you are staying at the guesthouse) We have books for sale, and we accept cash, checks and credit cards (American Express, Discover, Visa and Mastercard). WHAT NOT TO BRING Unfortunately, we cannot invite you to bring your companion animals to IHE. Some people in your class may be allergic to dogs or cats, and there are already companion animals on the premises (though not in the room where we ll be meeting). Please avoid wearing strong scents (including bug repellants with a strong odor, whether or not they are natural repellants). Some people have allergies to these chemicals and odors. Feel free to bring scent-free bug repellants. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are happy to help with specific concerns or requirements you might have and greatly look forward to meeting you in person!
