Enjoy the day at leisure with your Venice Card providing free access to both the Doge s Palace and the Basilica. This card also doubles up as a beat the queues card meaning you waste very little time queuing to get in. The Doge s Palace was the seat of power for the ruling body in past Venice, and now displays paintings of the Doge s through the ages. Be sure to visit the Map Room, which has to be one of the main splendours of the palace. Head downstairs to the prison, passing over The Bridge of Sighs on the way. This was named as it was the last view of the outside world the prisoners had before descending to their cells. Of course the most famous prisoner was Casanova who escaped for freedom, from this prison. Then visit St Mark s Basilica. This building is an eclectic mix of east meets west with Venetian-Turkish design. In fact for several euros you can head up to the roof where the spoils of a historical conquest with Constantinople are a group of horses, which originated in Turkey. A la Carte Optional Extras Private Highlights Tour of Venice For first timers to Venice, this is a great introduction. Your private guide will take you on a 3-4 hr tour around St Mark s Basilica and the Doge s Palace. You will be able to walk through the prison made famous for temporarily housing Casanova, along with walking over the Bridge of Sighs; prisoners last glimpse of the outside world. In the basilica, ascend to the roof where you can see the bronze horses taken from Constantinople in past battles. Price Per Person: 190 per person Lagoon Island Regular Excursion Begin this 4hr excursion sailing past San Giorgio Maggiore before disembarking on your first island of Murano. Murano is known for its glass manufacturing and the tour includes a visit to one of the factories. Travel onwards to Burano, an archipelago of four islands, and sample the lace which Burano is famous for. Finish the tour on Torcello, visiting the cathedral and church on this quieter island. We had a wonderful holiday in beautiful Venice. Our guide to the Basilica and St Mark s square was charming, very knowledgeable and very good fun. La Fenice was wonderful, a stunning performance of Tosca which we thoroughly enjoyed with excellent seats. The Metropole staff were charming and the food excellent. Altogether great. Michael Sitting here at the airport on the way back from Venice, we had a really lovely long weekend and just wanted to say thanks. Everything worked really well. Hotel was just brilliant, terrific staff, and the gourmet meal was brilliant. Private tour with guide was a super way to see some of the more unusual sights.
