It is with great pleasure that I offer my congratulations to the recipients of this year s Hastings District Council Civic Honours Awards. Tonight we honour six outstanding individuals, who have all given many years of voluntary service to the community. Volunteers are at the heart of the community - dedicating a tremendous amount of time and energy to help make Hastings a better place to live. The role of the volunteer is becoming more crucial to the wellbeing of our residents as each year passes. As volunteers, you are creating a positive change on many fronts community health care, sports and recreation, heritage and the arts, environmental protection, disaster relief and volunteer fire fighting the list is endless. The level of dedication shown by volunteers from around the district is gratifying and a tribute to the public spirit which exists in Hastings. It is pleasing that a large number of nominations have been received for people from many different walks of life. We are extremely grateful to the nominators who have taken the time to put pen to paper, and highlighted the amazing work that these people are doing for the community. I congratulate those of you who have been recognised with a Civic Honours Award. Your dedication is greatly valued by Council and the community alike and this award is a token of our appreciation. On behalf of the community, I thank you all for your efforts in helping to make Hastings a great place to live and raise a family and I wish you well with your volunteering in the future. Graham Arthur HEALTH AND WELFARE Graham became part of the Haumoana Volunteer Fire Brigade in 1988. Since then he has attended over 80% of all emergency calls, and shown exceptional commitment to furthering his training to the point where he has progressed though the Fire Service ranks to become Station Officer at Haumoana. The Haumoana Volunteer Brigade is unique in that it is responsible for manning the water tanker during emergencies which are attended by the Hastings Emergency Management team. The brigade also attends emergency situations with St John Ambulance from Awatoto in the north through to Karamu Creek and Red Bridge in the south, and out to Cape Kidnappers. The volunteers attended over 150 emergency related calls in 2012, and Graham was amongst those at the forefront of responding at each of these situations. The community comes first with Graham and during the storm that devastated the coastal area of Hastings District in April 2011, he went to the aid of the elderly in Te Awanga, helping clean up the damage and ensuring their safety. Graham was a foundation member of the Haumoana/Te Awanga Civil Defence Committee which aims to ensure the community is prepared in the event of an emergency. Since becoming a volunteer, Graham Arthur has shown exceptional commitment to the Haumoana Volunteer Fire Brigade and the wider community. Morris Elliott HEALTH AND WELFARE Morris has been a member of the Lions Club of Hastings, Host for 50 years, and has been made a life member of the organisation. He was elected president of the Lions Club in 1966, is a life member of the Lloyd Morgan Charitable Trust and is a Melvin Jones Fellow, the highest award made by Lions Clubs International. If there is a community project being undertaken by Lions, Morris is there. He regularly helps with the annual citrus fruit collection for residents in Titahi Bay, looks after safety of the public at the annual Blossom Parade and helps club members and their families during times of sickness and ill health. However, it s not only Lions projects that Morris is passionate about. He supports Ramblers Cycling Club doing road safety duties during the Tour of the Bay, helps with collections for the Blind Foundation, the Heart Foundation and Cranford Hospice during their annual appeals and was part of the group which developed the Fantasyland Railway at what is now Splash Planet. During the past ten years, Morris has been a volunteer broadcaster on Radio Kidnappers presenting Swing and Sway with Morris J each Friday. He has held a number of positions on the Combined Probus Club of Te Mata, including president and supports the Red Cross by driving the community transport van on most Wednesdays. Morris Elliott is renowned for his cheerfulness and care for residents in the street where he lives. When asked how his day is going, Morris is likely to reply every day is a good day. Beverley Anne Heard ARTS AND CULTURE Beverley has been a wonderful supporter of the community through a lifetime of involvement in music. She is a talented soloist who has had a long involvement with Opera Hawke s Bay, the Hastings Music Society, Hastings Choral Society and the Choralairs and the Collectors Group Havelock North. The Hastings Music society was started 80 years ago with the aim of fostering classical music in our district, and Beverley is the current president of the organisation. As a life member and former board member of Opera Hawke s Bay, Beverley has fundraised, sought out performers (both local and national) and helped out wherever she was needed. The Choralairs is a group of people who have enjoyed a lifetime of singing and now perform for pleasure to audiences in retirement complexes, Probus Groups, Masonic Lodges and at Council functions. Beverley also manages to find time to help with the organization of monthly concerts at the Havelock North Function centre, which attract audiences from all around the region. Beverley is a singer, an organiser and works tirelessly for the arts community around Hawke s Bay. Hastings District Council 2013 Civic Honours Award Ceremony 6

Barbara Hodgson HEALTH AND WELFARE For 25 years Barbara has contributed her talents to social services in Hastings, helping children and their families, the elderly and the disabled. She is a volunteer for Presbyterian Support East Coast, a long serving member on the Scott Fund Trust and hosted international students who have furthered their studies in Hastings through the AFS programme (American Field Service now known as the AFS Intercultural Progamme). Barbara was instrumental in setting up and running the Hastings Adult Day care centre from 1973 1998. In 1979 she was involved in the development of a family/whanau based home support service which has evolved through the years from Home Builders to Family Focus and now Family Works. The service offers support for children and their families in Hastings and Gisborne. Barbara was the Chairperson of Presbyterian Support East Coast for eight years and on the board for 20 years and has now been made a life member of the organisation. She is the secretary of the Scott Fund Trust which provides grants for youngsters with physical disabilities. As an elder of St Andrews Presbyterian Church in Hastings she combines a governance role with caring for those in need. Barbara is also involved in a project which will make the church hall better suited to the needs of the community. Barbara Hodgson has the much admired gifts of generosity, discretion and integrity and is a true team player who just gets things done. Hastings District Council 2013 Civic Honours Award Ceremony 7

Maggie McGarvie HEALTH AND WELFARE Maggie is a longstanding member of the Hastings Alzheimer s committee and for the past nine years, has run the organisation s major fundraising activity, a golf tournament at the Hastings Golf Club. Maggie works diligently on fundraising activities and these extra funds have helped the Alzheimers Society in Hastings to expand its services to the community. Her fundraising efforts have been instrumental in the Society purchasing two properties in Windsor Avenue. This allows the Society to offer respite for people who are caring for loved ones living at home with dementia. Being able to take some time out is important for those care givers and is a valuable service for residents in the Hastings District. Maggie McGarvie has been a tireless worker for the Alzheimers Society for many years and her fundraising efforts will benefit the community for many years to come. James Morgan ARTS AND CULTURE James is a retired newspaper editor, farmer, forester and administrator, and spends much of his spare time helping a number of community organisations. He served 44 years in the newspaper industry mostly in Hawke s Bay, some overseas, a career that culminated in editorship of the Herald Tribune. His work fired a passion to preserve the history of the region. He was instrumental in securing Stoneycroft Homestead as the new home for the Hawke s Bay Digital Archives Trust. The journey to establish the archives, (or the Hawke s Bay Knowledge Bank as it is called), started in 2005 when the Hastings District Council purchased Stoneycroft. The real work for the Trust began in 2008 and culminated with the official opening of the centre in December 2012. James is rightly proud of the new facility which will ensure preservation of the region s history for future generations to enjoy. He is also a strong advocate of the Sister City relationship between Hastings and Guilin in China and most recently took part in transforming the Sister City Board into the International Advisory Group. His commitment to Hastings Group Theatre and Napier Operatic Society has seen him become a life member of both organisations. He is the founder/chairman of the Flaxmere Licensing Trust, a foundation director of Trust House Ltd, a participant in the Headstart Programme at Hawke s Bay Hospital and an instigator of the Joan Velvin garden at the hospital. James Morgan has been a colourful personality in the Hastings community for many years. He is a man with passion, enthusiasm and a determination to do what is best for Hawke s Bay.
