Report from the Los Angeles Terminal Area Chart Subcommittee March 12, 2014
There are six venues on the Los Angeles TAC chart that fall under FDC NOTAM 9/5151 (Stadium TFR). Discussion: This information is best disseminated on the TAC chart; if there is opposition to printing on the TAC chart, we can request it be published in the A/FD, adding the following internet information: Pilots wanting to have the the most up-to-date information for venues covered under the Stadium NOTAM can consult the following websites: Major League Baseball games, based on published schedules from www.mlb.com National Football League games, (including pre-season) based on published schedules from www.nfl.com NASCAR (Nextel Cup Series, Busch Series, and Craftsman Truck Series), based on published schedules from www.nascar.com Formula 1 Series, based on published schedule from www.formula1.com Additionally, Angel Stadium and California Speedway are currently Visual Checkpoints on the LA TAC chart. Consideration should be given to change these to VFR waypoints. TAC recommendation FDC NOTAM 9/5151, called the Stadium TFR NOTAM, states, in part, Commencing one hour before the scheduled time of the event until one hour after the end of the event, all aircraft and parachute operations are prohibited within a 3 nmr up to and including 3000 ft agl of any stadium having a seating capacity of 30,000 or more people where either a regular or post season Major League Baseball, National Football League, or NCAA Division One football game is occurring. This NOTAM also applies to NASCAR Sprint Cup, Indy Car, and Champ series races excluding qualifying and pre-race events. The NOTAM is unclear if the seating capacity of a car racing venue is also 30,000 or more. Therefore, it may be prudent to stay 3000 AGL above all stadiums in lieu of better knowledge. On the Los Angeles Terminal Area chart, there are several locations where the Stadium NOTAM (and the associated National Defense Airspace) may apply: Team Stadium VFR Waypoint Location University of California Los Angeles, Rose Bowl VPLRB N34 09.67 / W118 10.05 University of Southern California LA Coliseum VPLLC N34 00.83 / W118 17.27 Anaheim Angels Anaheim Stadium N33 48.00 / W117 53.40 Los Angeles Dodgers Dodger Stadium VPLDS N34 04.42 / W118 14.42 Irwindale Speedway N34 06.56 / W117 59.29 California Speedway N34 05.37 / W117 30.03 RECOMMENDATION FOR NEXT LOS ANGELES TAC CHART REVISION Add Stadium TFR information to a panel on the Los Angeles TAC chart. Press Release VFR CHECKPOINTS FOR THE LOS ANGELES SPECIAL FLIGHT RULES AREA by Charlie Zabinski We as pilots LOVE to have information. Flying through the Los Angeles Special Flight Rules Area (SFRA), we need to give good VFR position and altitude reports. It is critical for safe flight operations. It is the same as non-towered airports position reports are critical to everyone in the area. I have recommended to the Southern California Airspace Users Working Group (scauwg) some changes for the SFRA side panel of the LA TAC chart: 1. Delete notices: a. NOTICE: Frequency 128.55 is recommended for the exchange of information between pilots using this area. b. AIR TO AIR FREQUENCY 128.55 2. Add notice: a. NOTICE: FREQUENCY 128.55 and VFR checkpoints are recommended for the exchange of information between pilots using this area. 3. Add VFR checkpoint symbols and names a. Santa Monica VOR b. Ballona Creek c. LAX d. Imperial Hwy Pilots than can use standardized positions for communication in the SFRA. Example: Los Angeles Special Flight Rules AREA, Cessna 1234, Over [(Santa Monica VOR), (Ballona Creek), (LAX), (Imperial Hwy)], Southeastern Bound, 3,500 feet. Same as Northwestern Bound at 4,500 feet. I always look at things as a pilot from another part of the country on a VFR flight trying to navigate through the LA Basin TO MOST PEOPLE THE SKY IS THE LIMIT. TO THOSE WHO LOVE TO FLY THE SKY IS HOME. HERE WE GO. CZ

HOLLYWOOD PARK CLOSES S FOR GOOD Updated: December 22, 2013, 10:51 PM INGLEWOOD, Calif. -- Fans crowded into Betfair Hollywood Park for the last time Sunday. The track closed for good after the day's 11 races, ending 75 years of racing that featured such thoroughbred stars as Seabiscuit, Triple Crown winners Citation, Seattle Slew and Affirmed, and Zenyatta. The first Breeders' Cup in 1984 was run here. The track will be turned into a residential and retail development starting next year. We will be losing the Hollywood Park VFR waypoint. The route needs to be renamed and redesigned using a different visual reference.
