S o u t h e r n N e v a d a C h a p t e r, I n c. # 2 7 3 5 J A N U A R Y 2 0 1 6 The Director s Saddle So here it is January, the start of a new year. A lot went on last year: great rides, meet & eats and fun overnighters. Our charity events were over the top. On December 12 th, we had the NCCF Toy Run and gave away 38 bikes, some big stuffed animals and a lot of toys to the children. It was a great event with the most families we have ever had. The Glow Ride to Lake Havasu was a lot of fun; all of us were covered in glow sticks. Must have been quite a sight from the water. This month we have the Hair of the Hog on the 1 st, then Frosty Balls on the 9 th. A new member ride on the 16 th and a Meet & Eat at Ichabod s on the 20 th. Then comes the Yuma overnighter on the 23 rd and on February 6 th is the Chilly Buns ride. So you see we are starting the year off with some good events. The first General Membership meeting of 2016 is on the 12th at LVHD. The motto of this chapter is to Ride Safe and Have Fun. Well I think we put together a team that can get that done to the fullest. We have the best Road Captains that plan the routes and work hard to get us to and from places safely. We also planned some new day rides and of course the overnighters that are so much fun. It was suggested that we plan one long ride each year, so the Road Captains are working on a five day, four night ride. Sounds like fun. I want to thank all the board members that stayed on this year to help me and the new people who stepped up. Thank you. It s Continued on Page 2 S.N.H.O.G. The Director s Saddle...continued going to be a great year. Thanks to Roger for the past year and for showing me all the things I need to do to get started as the director. Hope you all had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New year. Let s make 2016 a great year and LET S RIDE!!! Page 2

Your Officers for 2016! Hello everyone! For those who don t know me I am Dirk Smith. I have the honor of being your Southern Nevada Harley Owners Group Director for 2016. Like a lot of you I started out riding dirt bikes, even racing motocross in the early 70s. I bought my first Harley in 1979, a 1975 Sportster. Then life happened and I sold it for the down payment on a bass boat. Twenty years later when the kids were grown and gone, I sold the boat for a down payment on a 2007 Road King. After 3 years and only 7,000 miles on the bike, Claudia (Dirks Wife) said we needed to find people to ride with. So in July of 2010 we went to our first HOG meeting and joined that night. Three years later when I traded in the Road King it had 34,000 miles on it. Yes we are a riding chapter. I became an officer six months after joining the chapter. I was an ambassador for a couple of years then the merchandise officer for three years. Then I was asked to be the Assistant Director last year. It s great to be involved. I ve always believed that you get out of it what you put into it. Happy New Year! Let me introduce myself. My name is Wayne John Crouse. My mom named me after her favorite movie star John Wayne, but today I m known as Santa. I grew up and lived in Glen Burnie, MD. (That s halfway between Baltimore and Annapolis). I joined the Army and went to Vietnam in 1967-68 with the 117 th Assault Helicopter Group. I retired from a 42 year career as a professional driver driving tractor-trailers and tour busses nationwide. I ve had a motorcycle license since I was sixteen but didn t get my first Harley until 2008. I now am a proud owner of a 2014 Tri-Glide Trike. My wife and I moved here in October 2012, and joined the SNHOG chapter November 2012- Wow! We ve been part of this family for three years already! Some of my duties this year will be as your Assistant Director/Charity Officer. I expect 2016 to be great because our SNHOG Chapter is not only caring but giving. So watch for events and updates throughout the year. The NCCF (Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation) Toy Drive in December was spectacular! We gave many families going through very difficult times a nicer Christmas. As I ve said before, this is a very giving group of people in our SNHOG Chapter and it showed at this event. Thanks to the members and dealerships for participating and THANKS-THANKS-THANKS for all the gifts and 38 bicycles! You are AWESOME! I personally want to thank everyone (especially my reindeer) who rode with and escorted Santa to the front door of the dealership. It was a thrill and honor for this old man. Come on and join us in 2016! Wayne (Santa) I m Roddy Hopper. I have been a HOG member since 2008 and a Charter member of Lone Wolf HOG Chapter in Spokane, WA. In 2007, after retiring from the Washington State Patrol, my wife Susyq and I moved to Surprise, AZ. We joined the Arrowhead HOG Chapter in Peoria, AZ. There I served as Road Captain, Activities Officer, and Safety Director. On March 9 th Susyq and I moved to Las Vegas and I m currently employed by Truline Corporation as their Transportation Safety Director. We joined SNHOG in July 2015. My current Harley ride is a 2014 Limited. I am looking forward to serving on the Primary Board as one of your Assistant Directors, and look forward to a fun year. Debbie Dartois is returning as the Chapter Secretary. Page 3

Your Officers for 2016, page 2 Minnie Watson is returning as the Chapter Treasurer. Steve Ritchey is returning as the Dealer Representative. Glen Oelrich is returning as the Lead Road Captain. Mark Hastie is returning as one of the Assistant Lead Road Captains. mark@snhoglv.com Page 4

Your Officers for 2016, page 3 Jim Speedo Larson is returning as one of the Assistant Lead Road Captains. speedo@snhoglv.com My name is Kristine Scott. I look forward to being your Activities Officer for 2016. What a great HOG chapter and I feel honored to be part of it! After riding on the back of Bob s bike for 4 years, I decided I wanted to be a big girl all on my own, and I have been riding my 1200 XL Custom Sportster for 4 years this February and absolutely love it! My favorite riding to date has been Million Dollar Hwy, Yosemite, bike camping, Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim & competing in 2 points rallies in Kearn County CA and White Stage out of Beatty. I grew up on the Iron Range of northern MN and then proudly served in the US Navy. My travels took to me to the east coast and Naples, Italy an amazing experience. Bob and I have been here in the valley for almost 9 years, transplants from MN (where one cannot ride 12 months a year!) due to a job transfer for him. I have had the honor of community organizing in the past with Lions Club Int l, Women of Today, Veteran s Olympics and charity celebrity golf events. I am currently the controller for a small general contractor, but I am just now finally starting my own accounting services business. Besides riding and volunteering, my other passions are cooking, painting, piano and being a Gama to my amazing G-babies! Live to Ride Ride to Live. Thank you for this opportunity. Sandy Backus is returning as the Membership Officer. I m Susy Hopper. I have been a HOG member since 2008 and a Charter member of Lone Wolf HOG Chapter in Spokane, WA. In 2007 I moved to Surprise, AZ with my husband Roddy. We joined the Arrowhead HOG Chapter in Peoria, AZ where I served as Road Captain, Activities Officer, and Secretary. On March 9 th Roddy and I moved to Las Vegas. We joined SNOG in July 2015. My current Harley ride is a 2014 Street Glide Special. I look forward to serving as the SNHOG chapter s LOH officer for the year 2016. Page 5

Your Officers for 2016, page 4 Hello! Happy blessed New Year SNHOG members. I am Beverly Muise-Madrid. I have the honor and somewhat scary privilege of stepping into the position of Editor of our newsletter. Scary because I know that Beverly Kusler has done an absolutely excellent job as Editor. I feel I have some very big biker boots to fill. Lol! Now just a little bit about me. Okay truth, a lot about me. I was born in Albuquerque NM but raised most of my life in Oklahoma. I am 2nd oldest in a family of 10 children. As a single parent, I have raised 4 wonderful, very handsome and talented young men. They have given me 12 grandchildren. They are each very special in my life. My father was my hero. He taught me to appreciate life's simple things; to succeed you must work hard at everything you do, to love unconditionally, and to appreciate different types of music. He also taught me the love of dancing. I can and generally will dance to just about anything that has a rhythm. I am an accomplished equestrian. Horses have been my greatest passion for over 50 years. I have been fortunate to have owned, trained and shown some of the most beautiful and talented paint and quarter horses. My horses have earned multiple State and World titles. Sadly, with the death of my son Will in 2007, I gave up all training and competitions. I continue today to own 6 of those horses. January 2012 brought about change. I bought my first motorcycle, Skylar. She is a beautiful custom blue painted 2007 Deluxe. I realized right then that I had found a whole new joy in my life. January 6, 2014 I made the move to Las Vegas. It would take until the spring of 2015 to bring my bike here from California. By August, Skylar and I were off to our first Sturgis bike rally. Wow what fun. My lucky day came in late August when I ran into one of our ambassadors at RRHD. He introduced me to the SNHOG chapter. I joined what I thought was just another HOG chapter. Little did I know how different this group really is and how my life would change. I wanted more riding time and boy have I gotten it. Riding just about every weekend, overnight trips and even a midweek ride or 2 or 3. Not to mention dinners together. Note to self: this group s kind of fun...hmmm. Now I have to admit I do have a favorite ride. It has been Speedo's midweek rides. This to me is due to the personalized riding education I have received from Speedo and the multitude of years of experience gathered there for his rides. Speedo has taught me so much about safe riding and that I can go on a ride, relax, and just have fun doing what we all love: riding. Though I know he takes his position as Road Captain very seriously, he makes his rides fun and filled with laughter. He seems to always take the time to make sure all concerns have been addressed and that we all enjoy each ride no matter where he may take us. And if conditions are just not safe for a ride he says, "Let's just go get something to eat." Safety is #1 with this chapter. Since joining this chapter I have met some of the nicest, most caring, and fun-loving individuals that I could have ever had the pleasure to meet. I have had the opportunity to ride to many different places that I have never been before. Y all are the greatest and it is because of you that I made the decision to get more involved. So as Roger suggested on my first day as a member of SNHOG, I have decided to step into the position of Editor. Okay, so it took a few months for you to make up my mind. Hmmm Thank you for allowing me to serve you. Jason Jenkins will be the webmaster for the Chapter website, www.snhoglv.com Cliff Bauman is returning as the Merchandise Officer. Joan Bauman will be holding the Merchandise Officer position with Cliff. Page 6

Roadside Assistance As we start another year, I would like to say that I enjoyed working with last year s Director Roger and am looking forward to working with our new Director Dirk. I have the honor of serving as Lead Road Captain for the Chapter again (and I wasn t even late for the meeting this time). I also have Speedo and Mark returning as Assistant Lead Road Captains. We brief at every ride that if you pull out of the group whatever the reason a Road Captain will join you - either pulling out with you or coming back to meet you. If you pull out for a non-mechanical issue (i.e. putting on a coat, etc.) the Road Captain will lead you to rejoin the group or make it to the destination. If you have a mechanical problem, the Road Captain can help get assistance in the form of a tow vehicle. The RC will stay as long as he or she thinks it is necessary and is assured you have other assistance on the way. IF you do pull out, make sure the Road Captains know you have. If you have a radio, tell us. That is one time a member should talk. If no, pull to the side of the road. If you are near the front in a large group and turn into someplace, the rear Road Captains may not notice that you have pulled out. That brings me to the subject of Roadside Assistance. As a group we ride a lot. Being located where we are we tend to ride through some pretty remote areas. A bike breakdown can occur at any time either riding down the road and the bike stops running or stopping at a remote scenic pullout and the bike won t start. The breakdown could be a few hundred miles from a HD dealership which can be a very expensive tow bill, not to mention the time it would take to get a tow. One of the benefits we have as HOG members is the Standard roadside assistance from Road America. This program will provide a tow in case of mechanical problem, accident, lost key (if necessary), or dead battery. Tows will be to the nearest HD dealership or other location closer. In addition they will deliver fuel, oil, or water. It covers one HD motorcycle registered to a full member. However, the standard package is limited to one occurrence per year with a maximum coverage of $100 per year. That would get you a tow not much further than from Boulder City to Henderson HD. I strongly recommend upgrading this coverage for the riding we do. There are three upgrade options from Road America Deluxe ($19.95), Ultra ($29.95), and Ultra Plus ($49.95). The Deluxe and Ultra packages will cover two motorcycles and will cover the full cost of a tow to the nearest HD dealership or the delivery of fluids with no limitations to the number of occurrences. The difference between the Deluxe and Ultra packages is that the Ultra will provide Emergency Travel reimbursement in the case of a warrantied mechanical breakdown or accident for occurrences over 100 miles from home up to $1000. The Ultra Plus is the Ultra, plus coverage of up to three covered vehicles. Let me change the subject before I close. Road Captain is one of the officer positions which can be applied for at any time during the year. We are continually looking for qualified riders to serve and help the Chapter conduct safe and fun rides. If interested talk to me or any of the other Road Captains. Let s have fun and ride safe. By Glen Oelrich, Lead Road Captain Page 7

Event Photographs A Friendly Reminder! Photographs are such a great way to remember events in our lives. Our SNHOG Event Photo Gallery is also a great way to share the fun we have as a Chapter with friends, family and/or anyone who is skeptical about joining our Chapter. By browsing through our event photos for just a few minutes, anyone is able to quickly realize we ride and have fun all year round! Although Claudia Smith and Cinda Giesing are our official Chapter Photographers, they are obviously not the only ones taking pictures at our events. If you have photos you would like to submit for the gallery, please email them to photo@snhoglv.com and they ll get added to the gallery. The name and date of the event must be included in the email. Be sure to visit our online Photo Gallery at http://www.snhoglv.com If you are interested in becoming a Chapter Photographer, please fill out and submit an officer application. PLEASE BE ADVISED Photographing, filming, recording, and videotaping of activities and events will be occurring at our events. By entering the H.O.G. event area, you irrevocably grant permission to the Harley-Davidson Motor Company and its agents to photograph, film, record, and/or videotape you and use (and authorize the use of) your name, image, likeness, voice, and/or biographical or other information in any and all media now known or hereinafter developed in perpetuity for any and all purposes.
