Let s Ride by Gary Hopper, Head Road Captain A new year is here and we just keep riding. California s climate allows for year-round riding, just dodging a few rain drops now and then. Gear up for the weather and hit the road. All the new heated options from gear to grips to seats make for a comfy ride. Our winter R.T.S. (Run to the Sun) rides don t have specific destinations, just look in all directions and ride to the brightest spot on the horizon. We will have VFW Breakfast R.T.S. rides for the next few months. Our Safety Officer, Doug Kirk, has started some weekday rides for the lucky ones that can ride in the middle of the week. The Coffee Club Rides start in January - don t miss out! The Chapter is going to hold a Jerry Degraw memorial ride to Phil s Fish House in Moss Landing in April. This was Jerry & Lynn s favorite spot and his first lead as a Road Captain. Let s all come out and pay tribute to a cherished member and friend. We will be having our New Year Road Captains meeting at Mitchell s Harley in the conference room on Saturday, January 14th at 9:00 a.m. We will be working on the 2017 calendar of rides and events. If you would like to join the Road Captain crew you re invited to attend and see what it s all about. Come join in on the fun of leading rides and getting the best parking spot at the rides destination.

SAFETY ON THE ROAD! by Doug Kirk, Safety Officer Wednesday, December 21, 2016 Winter solstice is an astronomical phenomenon marking the shortest day of the year, about 9 hours and 23 minutes of daylight. What this mean to Harley riders is we have less daylight to enjoy our passion. By the time our first ride of the year happens on January 1, 2017, we will have gained about 10 minutes of daylight. However, these extra 10 minutes do not translate into better riding conditions. The days are still very short and this winter it seems that rain might be a problem. Be sure to take the weather and road conditions into account when planning your ride. FOG Stay home if you can. If you can t see the car in front of you, the one following really can t see you. RAIN Roads are wet and your field of vision will be less. Wet black top and steel plates are skidding hazards. Always take your rain gear even if you don t think you need it. It makes a great outer windbreaker layer if it gets really cold. COLD The chill factor at 40 degrees if you are going 60 miles per hour is 25 degrees and takes only 30 minutes to have frostbite. Have plenty of layers including heated gear to stay warm. Have backup clothes in case your heated gear fails. ICE It can be anywhere. Be extra careful on shaded roads and corners especially if you are riding at higher elevations. The sun might be out, but that shady spot will not be thawed out. What to do? Now is the time to get your bike in to the Shop for servicing. Have everything checked out so when Spring arrives you will be ready to hit the road. Ride Safe! See you on the road!
