3 Day 3, June 22, Monday: Landing Beaches - Bayeux Breakfast at your hotel. Begin our da with a visit to the sites of the D-Day Landings, the Allied invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944. Our first stop will be Sainte-Mere-Eglise, where some 13,000 American paratroopers dropped from the skies in the early hours of June 6, 1944 in support of the landings on Omaha Beach. We continue with a walk on Omaha Beach, where we will view the US Monument. Our day continues to Mulberry Harbor at Arromanches, before visiting the German Battery at Longues-sur-Mer. Our D-Day sightseeing concludes with time to explore Pointe du Hoc, the enemy command post of the entire invasion front, which is filled with monuments and memorials. We will also visit the American Military Cemetery of St. Laurent, where over 9,000 Americans who died in the Normandy campaign are buried. Time will be given for prayer and reflection. Continue to Bayeux, a city rich in Norman history and the first French town to be liberated during the D-Day Invasion, on June 7, 1944. Visit the Gothic Cathedrale Notre-Dame, and the Musée de la Tapisserie de Bayeux, which houses the spectacular Bayeux Tapestry. One of the most famous tapestries in the world, it is actually embroidery on a band of linen, 231 feet long and 20 inches wide. The tapestry depicts some 58 scenes in eight colors, which tells the story of the conquest of England by William the Conqueror. 15 minutes informal concert at the Cathedral in Bayeux. Dinner and overnight at hotel in Bayeux. (B,D) Day 4, June 23, Tuesday: Rouen - Giverny - Paris Noon: Buffet breakfast at hotel. This morning, we visit the historic town of Rouen. It was here that Rollo, the Viking warrior and first duke of Normandy, converted to Christianity in the 10th century. Four centuries later in 1431, Joan of Arc, the patron saint of France, was tried for heresy and burnt alive at the stake. Rouen, packed with lovely churches and old half-timbered houses, include poignant reminders of Joan of Arc. A dazzling modern church and memorial dedicated to Joan can be seen. Visit the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Rouen, which was often chosen by the French Impressionist painter, Monet, as the facade building in many of his paintings. The Rouen Cathedral boasts a strong musical tradition since the Middle Ages. Its Choir was famous up to the French Revolution for singing from memory. The first major organist was Jean Titelouze, the so-called father of the French organ school, who occupied the post for the titular organist in 1588 1633. Lunch-Time Concert Presentation at the Cathedrale Notre Dame, presented by Grace Church Choir. This afternoon, we continue to Paris, en-route we stop at Giverny.
