QUICK FIRST AID HINTS Recognizing Hypothermia shivering, exhaustion confusion, fumbling hands memory loss, slurred speech drowsiness What you should do if you suspect Hypothermia The first thing you should do is notify the nearest 1st Aid person If first aid is not readily available then take these actions: Send someone to get first aid Get the victim into a warm room or shelter. If the victim has on any wet clothing, remove it and replace with dry clothing Wrap the person in a blanket Provide warm beverages Recognizing Frostbite Frostbite will attack any exposed skin the most common areas are fingers, cheeks and ears. The first signs of frostbite: Redness on the skin and prickling pain White or grayish yellow skin area Skin feels unusually firm or waxy numbness Cold white spots on exposed skin surface What you should do if you suspect Frostbite The first thing you should do is notify the nearest 1st Aid person If first aid is not readily available take these actions: Send someone to get first aid Get the victim into a warm room or shelter Do not rub the frostbitten area with snow or massage it at all. This can cause more damage Don't use a heating pad, heat lamp, or the heat of a stove, fireplace, or radiator for warming. Affected areas are numb and can be easily burned. PREVENTION ACTION is the best form of defense against Hypothermia and frostbite. ADEQUATE CLOTHING in terms of hats, gloves, winter coat, snow pants and layers of inner clothing are best.
2014 Klondike Derby Event Information TYPE OF EVENT SCOUT PARTICIPATION CAMPING CHECK IN HEADQUARTERS Klondike Derby will feature opportunities to learn and have fun using scout skills All Scout troops, Venturing crews, Webelos dens are encouraged to participate This is a one day only event. There are opportunities for overnight camping available to event volunteers Between 7:00 and 8:00 am on Saturday. It is strongly recommended to plan your arrival as early as possible and register at the Main Lodge Main Lodge PARKING Park all vehicles in parking lot only. FEES PATCHES The cost for the event is $15.00 per person paid before the January 24, 2014 after that date the cost will be $20.00 per person All registered scouts and adults will receive a patch. SCORING AWARD PRESENTATION The dens will be judged on patrol method, scout spirit, and participation in the competitive and noncompetitive event. The sled race will be timed and scored separately. The awards presentation will be in the Dining Hall
PATROL SIZE KLONDIKE SLED Minimum of 4 Scouts max of 8 per patrol All patrols must have a sled to compete. Webelos are encouraged to make a cardboard sled. Boy Scouts and Venturing sleds must be between 4 feet and 6.5 feet long and 21 26 inches wide. Wheels and commercial skis are NOT permitted. The sled must be capable of holding 1 scout and all your equipment. NO SNOW? If there is no snow and the ground is soft, BE PREPARED to carry your equipment in back packs from station to station. CANCELLATION LUNCH WATER LATRINES UNIFORM WARM CLOTHING The event will run snow, rain, or shine. Lunch will be provided for all registered youth and adult participants. Bring whatever water is needed for your own use. Limited water is available. Toilets will be available near the main parking lot. The Boys Scouts of America are a uniformed organization and uniforms should be worn. Youth wearing tennis shoes WILL NOT be permitted to compete. Den leaders are responsible for proper winter apparel for their youth. FIRST AID Each den/patrol is to have a first aid kit for minor injures. Major injuries will be handled by local medical staff. A signed parental release form is required.

It should be big enough to carry one scout and the equipment on the list. The sled needs to be able to be pulled by the Scouts with rope refer to the Boy Scout design. Wood is the only material aloud for use as runners for the sleds. PVC and commercial skis are not allowed. The sled needs to be decorated. The sled will be judged for appearance and usability by the Webelos dens during the joint opening.
