Leadership Development (LIT) Hi Campers and Parents, Thank you for choosing to spend a week or more with us this July! This year, Camp Adventureland is celebrating almost 50 years of operation and during that time, thousands and thousands of campers like you have participated in our programs. This confirmation package will give you all of the information you will need for camp this summer as well as the LIT mandatory training weekend. Medical Information If you have not already done so, please complete the medical form by clicking on the link below. Camp Adventureland Medical Form The form can also be found on our website. WE MUST HAVE THIS INFORMATION PRIOR TO YOUR CHILD ARRIVING FOR THE TRAINING WEEKEND, JUNE 8-10, 2018. Upon check-in, all medication should be turned into the Camp Nurse or Camp Registrar. Campers will keep Ventolin Inhalers and Epi-pens/Ana-Kits for life threatening allergies in their personal day pack. We request that campers with Epi-pens bring at least two kits (three if possible). Please ensure ALL medications are brought to camp in the original containers and clearly marked with your child s FIRST and LAST name along with instructions for dosages. Dosette boxes filled with medication cannot be accepted. Please be sure to check expiration dates on all medications. First Year LITs First year LITs are asked to do the following: Complete a one page essay explaining to us why they would like to be an LIT Obtain 2 reference letters telling us why you are suited for a leadership role. Only one may be from a family member and the other can be from a Scout or Guide Leader, teacher, Youth Group leader, etc. These can be brought to the Training Weekend.

LIT Mandatory Training Weekend - June 8-10, 2018 During this weekend, LITs will participate in leadership and team building activities as well as mandatory Scouts Canada training programs. The weekend will be held at the camp. Check in will be at the Leathem Centre on Friday at 7pm and pick up will be on Sunday at 2pm. The Training Weekend is mandatory as we teach them many leadership and team building skills that will help them be successful during their week at camp. What to bring for your Training Weekend at Camp Please label everything! long pants Sleeping Bag long sleeve shirts Pillow shorts Extra Blanket/Campfire Blanket t-shirts Sleeping mat (likely in tents) Sweater or jacket Toothbrush/toothpaste underwear Face cloth and comb socks towel Bathing suit Soap (non-deodorant) Pajamas Water bottle/belt clip Flashlight/batteries 2 pens Raincoat Waterproof sunscreen lotion Hat/cap Non-aerosol insect repellent running shoes Rubber boots PLEASE LABEL EVERYTHING!!!! How to get to Camp Adventureland The camp is located at Woodland Trails Scout Camp, 14919 Kennedy Rd. south of Aurora Road. July Drop Off and Pick Up Check in for July is Sunday afternoons at 2pm in the camp parking lot. Please do not arrive prior to 2pm. Pick up on Friday is at 4:30pm at the camp. For those who have requested the bus, it will leave camp at approximately 4:45pm arriving at the bus stop location (Donway United

Church) approximately 5:30pm (Traffic on Friday evenings can be unpredictable, so please be patient). What to Pack in July We urge you to pay particular attention to our kit list and ensure that all of your child s gear is labelled with your child s last name (not just initials). We would recommend that everything is packed in one bag (e.g. hockey bag) to avoid items getting misplaced rather than several bags. Please do not pack gear in garbage bags. WE PREFER NO ELECTRONIC GAMES OR CELL PHONES PLEASE!!!! What to bring for your week at Camp Please label everything! 2 pairs of long pants Sleeping Bag 2 long sleeve shirts Pillow 2-3 pairs of shorts Extra Blanket/Campfire Blanket 3-4 t-shirts Laundry Bag Sweater or jacket Toothbrush/toothpaste 6 pairs of underwear Face cloth and comb 6 pairs of socks Soap (non-deodorant) Pajamas Non-breakable mug/water bottle with belt clip 2 swimsuits 2 stamps in a ziplock bag (optional) 2-3 towels Notebook (optional) Flashlight/batteries Bike Helmet (optional we do supply) Raincoat Teddy Bear (optional) Hat/cap Small Daypack (To carry swimsuit and towel) 2 pairs of running shoes Plain white t-shirt (for tie-dyeing) Rubber boots $20 for outing (provide at check in) Waterproof sunscreen lotion Non-aerosol insect repellent PLEASE LABEL EVERYTHING!!!! Lost and Found Despite our best efforts, the camp still compiles a quantity of lost and found each summer. To help prevent this, please ensure your child s gear (all of it) is clearly labelled. All items collected during the week will be available for viewing at pick up on Friday. Please look through these items before taking your child home. We will contact you for any items that are considered

valuable that are labelled and lost. You can call the camp at 647-469-8469 in July to make arrangements to pick up items. In August, you will need to make contact with the Camp Ranger to obtain any lost items. He can be reached through the Scout Office at 416-490-6364 ext 233. Any items that are not obtained by Labour Day will be washed and donated to a charity. Homesickness A child s first trip to summer camp is a great experience; however there is always the possibility of separation anxiety (home sickness). Our experience has indicated that this can be eased or lessened in a few ways and our staff is prepared and very sensitive to this issue and will work closely with any child who experiences homesickness. A phone call home usually aggravates the feelings of homesickness. Rather than encouraging your child to phone, we recommend sending a family photo to camp with them and writing them a letter. Here are some other ways to send your child "mail" while they are at camp: Items that have been clearly marked with your child's name can be given to our staff on Monday morning at check in for delivery later in the week. Emails can be sent to adventureland@scouts.ca. Please put your child's name in the subject line. These will be printed and delivered once a day. We'll even send back any responses they give us! If you wish to use Canada Post, send your letters early in the week or even the week before they go to camp, to ensure prompt delivery to the following address: (Child s name) Camp Adventureland c/o Woodland Trails Camp 14919 Kennedy Rd. Stouffville, Ontario L4A 7X5 While your child is staying with us, we will make every effort to ensure that any letters or care packages are hand delivered to your child. Extra Possible Opportunity Two to three LIT's who are aged 14+ who express an interest are provided an opportunity to serve as staff at our Adventureland Goes North program held at Haliburton Scout Reserve August 12-18, 2018. If your child is interested and available to participate and would like to be considered, please email mmcdermid@scouts.ca and also have your child communicate this to the LIT Coordinator(s). Selection is based on performance, suitability and experience in a

wilderness, water based camp setting (e.g. canoeing skills, fishing skills, etc). Decisions are not finalized until the end of July. We would like to extend an invitation to all parents and campers to join us for our End of Camp campfire on the last Thursday beginning at 7:30pm. Please park in the front parking lot and our staff will accompany you to the campfire area. If you plan to attend, please email us at adventureland@scouts.ca. If you have any unanswered questions or concerns, please contact our Camp Administrator, Deb Kaffer, rather than waiting to talk to us at check-in Sunday afternoon as it can get quite busy. This includes any special needs you wish to bring to our attention about your child. She can be reached by email at adventureland@scouts.ca or by phone at 416-490-6364 ext 300 or during camp in July at 647-469-8469. Lastly, I would love to hear any feedback from you or your child. Feel free to email me at my email address below with any feedback. I will often share this with our camp staff so if any individual staff should be highlighted, let me know. Yours in Scouting, Mark McDermid, BSW Camp Director mmcdermid@scouts.ca Follow us on:
