September 11, 2012 Dear artist: This is an invitation to join the Puerto Rican Institute for the Development of the Arts or PRIDA a new organization sponsored by Comité Noviembre* dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Puerto Rican arts and culture. Key Benefits: The key benefits of joining PRIDA include reducing your cost of your participation in festivals and craft fairs via reduced rates negotiated on your behalf by PRIDA, a monthly on-line newsletter alerting you to upcoming cultural events in the Greater New York Area and beyond. Finally, you will be notified when allocations are made for funding for the arts at a city and state level. This will ensure you have time to prepare appropriate grant applications that funding normally requires. PRIDA Discounts: For example, PRIDA membership will save you money on local area festivals set-up fees which will more than offset your $75 artist s membership in PRIDA. More importantly, if you join PRIDA now your set-up cost will be reduced by 10% for Comité Noviembre s Puerto Rican Artisan Fair and Exhibition planned for Saturday, November 17, 2012 at Hostos Community College. To Join: Submit the enclosed 1) PRIDA membership application and the enclosed Artist Application Form for Comité Noviembre s Puerto Rican Artisan Fair to take immediate advantage of a 10% discount on the set up fees per Comité Noviembre sponsored festival. 2) Send us two payments, one for the amount of your membership fee and another for the artisan fair application fee minus your 10% discount. Make both payments out to Comité Noviembre but make a note to put PRIDA on one and Artisan Fair on the other. You can send these two payments at the same time to Comité Noviembre, Midtown Station, P.O. Box 456, New York, NY 10018. Goals: One of PRIDA s primary goals is to make it easier for you, the artist, to participate in future festivals and fairs. But we will not stop there! Just as PRIDA and Comité Noviembre co-sponsors the upcoming fair they will partner to create other like events during the year. You will not have to wait for someone else to create a cultural event where you offer your creations to the public; we have an organization that will create events for us. *Comité Noviembre s mission is to commemorate and acknowledge all aspects of Puerto Rican life from the social and cultural to the educational, economic and political. The charge of CN is to create awareness of and preserve our rich culture, language, and heritage specifically for our youth to recognize and take ownership of it every day but specifically during the month of November. Please consider the possibilities and join PRIDA today. Sincerely, Luis Cordero Comité Noviembre s Puerto Rican Artisan Fair and Exhibition co-chair Midtown Station, P.O. Over 50 artesanos puertorriqueños participated and the event boasted an attendance of over 5000 people in this very first Fair. CN also conducted workshops for children and adults, like mask making, the history of the three kings celebration, Taíno storytelling in order to make sure that our youth learned about our culture, traditions and folklore. The day is advertised as an opportunity to kick-off your holiday shopping season and purchase unique Puerto Rican original gifts for that special person on your list and, at the same time support our artesanos. CN will continue to work with local media, (print, radio, television), to attract the community to this event. Thousands of participants are again expected.
