Weekend MCQ Course 8th - 9th February 2014 Melbourne Course Arrival Information Course Venue The course will be held in the GM-15 Theatre in the University of Melbourne s Law Building located at 185 Pelham Street, Carlton (Building 106, bottom-centre of Map 2 below). Enter the building via Pelham Street and proceed upstairs to the Mezzanine floor. Registration on the first day The DeltaMed registration desk will be located just outside the theatre door on the Mezzanine floor and will be open from 8:30am on Saturday 8th February. The introduction to the course will start in the theatre at 8:55am and the first session of the course will commence at 9:00am. You will need to go to the Registration Desk first, to collect your course notes. You should receive express registration information in the post the week before the course. This will include your name badge. Please bring this with you to the course and go to the Express Registration queue. It will enable you to quickly sign-in and collect your course material. If you do not receive this information or forget to bring it along, please ensure that you have some form of ID with you and go to the Registration Enquiries queue (please allow more time). Parking around the Venue Car parking in and around the University can be very difficult. On-street parking is available in the surrounding area, but most of it is metered and of short-term duration. The closest public car park is University Square car park. The entrance to the University Square car park is located on Berkeley Street, near the corner of Berkeley & Grattan Streets (see the P icons beside building number 104, lower-left of Map 2 below). The all-day parking fee is a flat rate of $8 on weekends. Alternatively, there is the Kenneth Myer Building (Building 144, to the left and centre of Map 2 below), off Royal Parade. It is $10 for 4 hours or $20 all day. Also, there is a public car park on the corner of Cardigan and Grattan Streets (entrance on Cardigan Street). This is the former Women s Hospital car park and is open from 7:30am, costs approximately $14 per day and is about a 10 minute walk from the course venue. Public Transport The University is very well served by tram services along Swanston Street and Royal Parade (which becomes Elizabeth St in the CBD) from the CBD and many other suburbs of Melbourne. The tram routes serving the University are indicated on the enclosed map. For full information on tram services and all Melbourne public transport, contact Public Transport Victoria on 1800 800 007 (daily 6am - midnight) or on-line at http://ptv.vic.gov.au. The PTV website contains a journey planner and special section on how to reach the University. Please note that you will require a myki smart-card to travel on trams. The re-usable myki smart-card stores value to pay your fare. myki cards can be purchased at the major train stations, such as the Southern Cross Station (which is also the airport bus city terminal), Flinders Street Station (Melbourne s main train station in the CBD) and at most 7-Eleven Stores. Ask the driver to take you to the University of Melbourne s Law Building at 185 Pelham Street, Carlton (near the corner of Pelham and Barry Streets). It is not far from the main gate of The University of Melbourne s Parkville Campus, which is on Grattan Street (see the bottom centre of Map 2 below).
Information for travel from Melbourne Airport Melbourne (Tullamarine airport) is Melbourne s international and main domestic airport. All major airlines use this airport apart from a few Jetstar flights which use Avalon Airport (see section on Avalon below). Please note that the majority of Jetstar flights operate from Tullamarine. From the Airport by Car: On exiting Tullamarine airport, follow the signs to Melbourne City via the Tullamarine Freeway. Follow the freeway/citylink until the Flemington Road exit. Please note that citylink is a toll road. Most rental cars are fitted with an e-tag or please visit www.citylink.com.au for other payment options. Continue along Flemington Road until you come to the Royal Melbourne Hospital on your left. Turn left straight after the hospital, into Grattan Street. Continue along Grattan Street. Continue past the first set of lights (at Royal Parade). Turn into Barry Street, which is the 2nd street on the right after the lights (and is just before and across the road from the main gate of the University of Melbourne on Grattan Street). Go along Barry Street until you meet the 1st intersection at Pelham Street. Turn right into Pelham Street and you will see the Law Building (185 Pelham Street) immediately to the right-hand side of you. Please see the Parking around the Venue section above for information on parking. It is approximately a 25 minute trip from the airport to the university at non-peak times. At peak times, it can take up to 35-40 minutes. From the Airport by Taxi: Taxis are available from the taxi rank outside the airport terminals. It is approximately a 25 minute trip from Tullamarine Airport to the University (21km) by taxi at non-peak times. At peak times, it can take up to 35-40 minutes. It is not far from the main gate of The University of Melbourne s Parkville Campus, which is on Grattan Street. From the Airport by SkyBus: The SkyBus service is an express bus service between Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine) and Southern Cross Station in Melbourne s CBD. Daytime departures are every 10 minutes and the service operates 24/7. It is a 30 minute journey from the airport direct to the Southern Cross Station in the city at non-peak hour times. Fares are approx $17 adult single and approx $28 adult return. Taxis are readily available at Southern Cross Station and a taxi to the University should cost between $20 - $35 and could take around 15-25 minutes (it is only a 4km trip but city traffic can make it slow). Alternatively, information on reaching the University by public transport from Southern Cross Station can be found on the Public Transport Victoria website http://ptv.vic.gov.au; however, this will involve changing trams and/or train, as there is no direct connection from the Station to the University. Skybus timetables and further information can be accessed at http://www.skybus.com.au/ skybusservice/. Skybus also runs a hotel transfer service from Southern Cross Station which is free for Skybus airport passengers. SkyBus operates from two locations at Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine) immediately outside Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 arrivals. For Terminal T2 catch SkyBus kerbside at T1 or T3, only a few steps away. For Terminal T4 catch SkyBus kerbside at T3, a short walk away.
The SkyBus city terminal is located undercover at Southern Cross Station, near the corner of Bourke and Spencer Streets in the CBD This is also the pick up/drop off location for the SkyBus Hotel Transfer Service. Information for travel from Avalon Airport Avalon Airport is situated some 55km from Melbourne s CBD. There is an airport bus linking it and Southern Cross Station in the CBD. The journey will normally take from 40-60 mins depending on traffic. Please refer to the information above in the section from the airport by Skybus on how to reach the University from Southern Cross Station. Further information on the bus service from Avalon Airport can be found at www.avalonairport.com.au Other information you might find useful prior to arrival Catering on the course Morning tea, a light lunch and afternoon tea will be provided on both days of the course. Course Schedule Registration will commence at 8.30 am on Saturday 8th February. The first session of each day will commence at 9 am. The course will finish at 4.45 pm on Saturday 8th and at 4.15 pm on Sunday 9th. A detailed copy of the schedule will be issued with the course notes on the first day. A trial exam will be held in the last session (3.10-4.15pm) on Sunday 9th February.
