A CELEBRATION OF CULTURE Yabun Festival is the largest celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures in New South Wales, and one of the most prolific Indigenous events in the world. The festival takes place at Victoria Park in Sydney on 26 January. It features a vibrant live music lineup of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, a bustling arts and stalls market, children s activities, community forums, and unique performances of traditional Aboriginal culture.
OUR HISTORY First held at Redfern Park in 2002, Yabun was created to continue in the long tradition of Sydney s Survival Day concerts. We celebrate the survival of our cultures, customs and the sharing of these ancient rites through dance and song. In its present home at Victoria Park, Camperdown, Yabun features two performance stages, a Corroboree ground, over 100 stalls as well as dedicated offerings catering to children, youth and the elderly.
MARKETPLACE Yabun hosts a thriving stalls market, featuring a wide range of food and merchandise stalls, a dedicated arts quarter, as well as stalls operated by community organisations promoting local services and programs. MUSIC + PERFORMANCE CORROBOREE GROUND The Corroboree Ground has earned a reputation for providing one of Sydney s most unique cultural experiences. Indigenous dance groups from across the country perform their traditional dances, telling stories and sharing their ancient cultures. The Corroboree runs for the duration of the festival day. Yabun means music with a beat in the Gadigal language. Along with the iconic performers, Yabun also provides a platform for the next generation of Indigenous artists to showcase their talent on our dedicated youth stage. Over the years, Yabun has had some of the most prominent Indigenous acts in the country including: Dan Sultan Coloured Stone Casey Donovan Frank Yamma Salt Water Band Archie Roach Bart Willoughby Nokturnl Christine Anu Jessica Mauboy Kev Carmody Ruby Hunter Troy Cassar-Daley Thelma Plum Jimmy Little George Rrurrambu
JARJUMS The Jarjums ( Children s ) area is a popular spot for little ones and their parents. It features arts and crafts activities, Dreamtime storytelling, sing alongs and a visit by the Taronga Zoo Mobile where children meet, learn about and interact with native animals. SPEAKOUT LIVE BROADCAST Yabun festival is broadcast live in Sydney on Koori Radio 93.7FM and across Australia via the National Indigenous Radio Service. Leaders and members of Sydney s Indigenous community hold panel discussions on a range of issues affecting the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
