NATIONAL MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY MONTHLY REPORT FOR JUNE, 2012 NMNH HQ, New Delhi World Environment Day (5 th June 2012) programme, Young Environmentalist of the Year Award-2012 (YEYA-2012) and Flagg off of the Science Express: Biodiversity Special This is a day to be cautioned about threats to environment and also to celebrate biological diversity. The Ministry of Environment & Forests in collaboration with Department of Science & Technology flagged off the Science Express: Biodiversity Special (SEBS) which is an interesting and educative exhibition on wheels. The Hon ble Minister of State (I/C) for Environment and Forests, Smt. Jayanti Natarajan along with Chief Minister of NCT of Delhi, Smt. Sheila Dikshit flagged off the train from Delhi Safdarjung Railway Station. The flag off function was coordinated by the NMNH. On this special occasion Smt. Sheila Dikshit, Chief Minister, NCT of Delhi conferred Young Environmentalist of the Year Award-2012 to Tushar Sahay, a class XII student of Lilawati Vidya Mandir Sr. Sec. School, Shakti Nagar, New Delhi-7. He got this award for showing best performance in the National level Poster Making Competition conducted on the occasion of Earth Day on 22 nd April 2012 at NMNH, New Delhi and its Regional Centres at RMNH- Mysore, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar and Sawai Madhopur. Family groups/general visitors 205 students from 6 schools/institutes in Delhi and NCR visited NMNH Museum. Around 5206 general visitors visited the Museum. The educational staff interacted with the students and general visitors in the museum galleries for exhibit interpretation. The visitors were also requested to fill the Feedback forms giving their remarks and suggestions regarding the facilities available in the museum. Nature on Screen: Films on the themes of Environment, Nature and Wildlife are screened in the museum auditorium twice a day at 11 am and 3 pm, for the visiting public and school students.

RMNH, Mysore World Environment Day-2012 World Environment Day was observed by RMNH, Mysore on 5 th June, 2012. The scheduled programme began with an invocation by the students of Srikanta Ballika Proudha Shala, Mysore. Shri C.Rajasundaram.Scientist D, RMNH.Mysore welcomed the gathering and the resource person that was followed by the release of the handouts on the theme of World Environment Day-5 th June 2012 i.e. Green Economy: Does it include you? This was followed by the Guest lecture by Dr. M.D. Madhusudhan. The resource person started his lecture with an interaction from the students of various schools and finally arrived at the topic of his lecture i.e. Wildlife Conservation in a Crowded Country. What is your role? Dr.M.D.Madhusudhan spoke on the present status of wildlife in a crowded country like India due to the encroachment of forest area by the interference of human beings for their own needs. He also stressed on the important role played by the local people of the forests in maintaining the eco- balance in nature. Dr. Madhusudhan also spoke on the various natural resources of the forests which are being degraded due to the greedy attitude of human beings. The whole lecture was supplemented by the visual media which was very effective, inspiring and thought provoking to the audience of the programme. The programme ended with the proposed vote of thanks by Smt. T.R. Mujeeba Khanum, Educational Assistant, RMNH, Mysore. The programme was compered by Shri B.S.Yogendra, Educational Assistant, RMNH, Mysore. Gallery Development: CPWD undertook the total renovation of the toilets in the Museum. Visitors During the month, a total number of 3735 visitors from different organizations, institutions and family groups visited the Museum. Film Shows: Daily film shows on environment were shown at 12.00 noon and 4.00 pm arranged for visitors.

RMNH, Bhopal Valedictory Function of Summer Vacation Programme Regional Museum of Natural History (RMNH), Bhopal organized a valedictory function of Summer Vacation Programme for children to earmark the World Environment Day - June 5, 2012. Top cop Shri Surendra Singh, IPS, Director General of Police (Jail), Bhopal was the Chief Guest while Dr. Raka Arya, Professor, Cell for Research in International Law (CRIL), NLIU, Bhopal was the Guest of Honour. The participants of summer vacation programme and winners of Poster Design Competition attended the programme along with their parents. The Botanical Expert Prof. P. K. Rai and the popular modeler Shri Vivek Verma and social activist Shri Ajay Dubey were also present. The Chief Guest Shri Surendra Singh, IPS, Director General of Police distributed the prizes to all winners and appreciated the role they played to save environment. Collaborative Programme World Environment Day: Forest Department, Government of Madhya Pradesh, Bhopal organized distribution of wildlife conservation prize and inauguration of Green India Mission on June 5, 2012 with the logistic support of RMNH, Bhopal. Hon ble Minister of Forest, Government of Madhya Pradesh, Shri Sartaj Singh was the Chief Guest while Shri Jay Singh Mravi, Hon ble State Minister of Forest, Government of Madhya Pradesh was the Guest of Honour. Shri Vishwas Sarang, Hon ble MLA and President of Madhya Pradesh Rajya Ludhuvanopaj Sahkari Sangh Maryadit was the special guest of the programme. Guest Lecture: On 13 th June, 2012 Ms. Elizabeth Achar, an Art istorian from Houston, America as well as the Director of Chitrashila The Corner Stone of Art shared her experience on education. This programme was attended by members of staff of RMNH, Bhopal Participation: Dr. S. Sethuramalingam, Scientist-E attended evaluation meeting on subject Science Popularization, S&T Promotion & Scientific Validation of Traditional Knowledge on June 18, 2012 as an expert member at Vigyan Bhawan, M. P. Council of Science & Technology, Bhopal. Visitors: A total number of 3138 public visited the Museum during May 20, 2012 to June 19, 2012. 5 groups of students/teachers were provided guided tours at museum s galleries during May 20, 2012 to June 19, 2012 Film Shows: Film shows on environment were shown to public daily at 3.00 p.m.

RMNH, Bhubaneswar World Environment Day & Valedictory Function of Summer Vacation Programme for Children - 2012: Museum celebrated World Environment Day-2012 and valedictory function of Summer Vacation Programme for Children-2012 on 5 th June 2012. Dr. (Mrs.) P. Mohanty-Hejmadi, Chairperson, APC, RMNH, Bhubaneswar graced the occasion as Chief Guest, Dr. S.P.Pattnaik, Principal, Regional Institute of Education, Bhubaneswar and Dr. V.P. Upadhyay, Director, Eastern Regional Office, MoE&F, Bhubaneswar were the Guests of Honour. The function started with the lighting of lamp and welcome address by Shri G. N. Indresha, Scientist-C & H.O., RMNH, Bhubaneswar. Participants shared their experience of the ten days long summer programme. Later, the function was followed by prize distribution for the winners of National Level Poster Making Competition held on 22 nd April 2012 on the occasion of Earth Day. Prizes and certificates were presented to awardees of summer vacation programme based on the overall performance of the creative activities conducted during the summer programme. Vote of thanks was given by Shri Dipak Haldar, Exhibit Preparator. Movement of Exhibition on Wheels: Exhibition on Wheels on the theme Forest Wealth was on display on 7 th & 8 th June 2012 at Shri Aurobindo Navodayama Siksha Niketan, Markona, Balasore, Odisha. About 1150 students, teachers and general public visited the mobile exhibition. World Day to Combat Desertification & Drought-2012: Museum celebrated World Day to Combat Desertification & Drought on 17 th June 2012 in collaboration with Forest Deptt., Govt. of Odisha. This year s theme is Healthy soil sustains your life: Let s go landdegradation neutral. Programme was graced by Shri. Debi Prasad Mishra, Hon ble Minister, Forests & Environment, Govt. of Odisha as Chief Guest, Shri Raj Kumar Sharma, Principal Secretary, Forest & Environment Deptt., Govt. of Odisha as Guest of Honour with Key Note address by Shri P. N. Padhi, PCCF, Odisha. Prof. Manmohan Mohanty, Eminent Geologist, Former Professor, Utkal University was the Chief speaker of the occasion. To mark this occasion a brochures about the desertification, draught, draught protection and mitigation was released by the Chief Guest. Museum celebrates Raja Festival: Museum celebrated the local festival-raja on 14, 15 & 16 June 2012. It is believed that mother earth or Bhudevi will be in menstrual cycle and is in rest and all the agricultural work is suspended for three days to give rest to mother earth. Significantly, it is a festival of the unmarried girls; the potential mothers. Girls are forbidden from all kinds of manual work during these three days of Raja-festival. During all these three days, they are seen in the best of dresses and decorations spending time visiting their friends or moving up and down on improvised swings. Special swing was arranged in the museum and was briefed about the significance of the festival in terms of environmental conservation. Visitors: During the month 11,400 visitors from different organizations, institutions and family groups visited the Museum. Shri Debi Prasad Mishra, Hon ble Minister, Forest & Environment, Govt. of Odisha also visited the Museum Film shows: Film shows on environment were shown to public daily at 3.00 p.m.

RG RMNH, Sawai Madhopur World Environment Day 5 th June 2012: RGRMNH celebrated World Environment Day in its own building with about 185 guests & participants. On the occasion of WED-2012, Mr. R. L. Chaudhary, A.C.F. Tiger Project, Ranthambhore, Sawai Madhopur was Chief Guest. Guest of Honour was Mr. K. N. Singh, (Civil) Asst. Er. CCU, Delhi and Mr. M. D. Parashar, Wildlife Artist and Photographer, Founder & President Ranthambhore School of Art & Wildlife Conservation Society was the Chief Speaker of the programme. On the occasion of WED a painting exhibition was held. Winners of the Poster Making Competition (held earlier onearth Day: 22 nd April 2012) were awarded along with cash prize and certificate on the occasion of World Environment Day. Temporary Gallery: Back ground painting and modeling works in the diorama of Vishnoi Community and Man & the nature is going on. Visitors: A group of 100 students and 20 teachers from Bright Sun Public School, Sawai Madhopur and 40 visitors from different organizations & institutions visited the painting exhibition which was held on the occasion of World Environment Day in the museum.
