Question and Answer Fact Sheet Proposed State Route 8 Realignment in Victor Valley (High Desert Corridor) What is being proposed? Caltrans, in partnership with the cities of Adelanto, and Victorville, the Town of Apple Valley, SANBAG, and the County of San Bernardino, proposes to adopt a new alignment for State Route 8 (SR 8) through Victor Valley. The action would upgrade SR 8 to a multilane freeway or expressway with three hundred feet of right of way for 20 miles. The project represents a stand alone phase of the High Desert Corridor (HDC) which will ultimately connect I-5 in Antelope Valley to I-5 in Victor Valley. The proposed realignment of SR 8, begins at US 95 in Adelanto. The route follows Air Expressway east past the So. Cal Logistics Airport, and continues east, bridging the National Trails Hwy, BNSF Railroad, Mojave River and connecting with I-5 (north of the Stoddard Wells Road Interchange). The alignment proceeds east passing south of Bell Mountain where it turns south-east, skirting the Apple Valley Dry Lake below the Apple Valley Airport and then heads south paralleling the east side of Joshua Road until it rejoins the existing SR 8 alignment about. miles southeast of Joshua Road. What is the Purpose of the Project? The existing east-west regional highway system in Victor Valley is underdeveloped and inadequate for handling current and future travel patterns. The project is expected to provide a new level of intra-valley accessibility, mobility and safety by constructing a new high capacity freeway or expressway along the strategic alignment adopted for the HDC. Objectives for the project call for improving travel deficiencies relating to: access to the Adelanto Industrial Park, SCLA and Apple Valley Airport; travel continuity on the SR 8 connecting link between US 95 and I-5; throughput, traffic separation, and safety for trucks/freight and regional traffic; capacity to accommodate a doubling of traffic demand anticipated by 200; and system operations (HDC) will function as a metropolitan by-pass, emergency route, a connecting link between major north-south corridors and regional airports, and a future corridor for commuter or high speed rail travel).
