NEWSLETTER 4 20 November 2018 Dear Parents/Carers, The past two weeks in Scargill things have been focused on our Scargill Citizen Value of respect. This was the theme of this week for Anti-Bullying week and it was the watchword as we thought about and celebrated the 100 th anniversary of World War 1. Remembrance Day All classes used the time leading up to Remembrance Day to think about what it meant and to do some work linked to it. On the Friday 9 th November we held a short service of Remembrance outside and I was delighted with the way that the children showed their respect throughout this sombre occasion. On Sunday 11 th November I was delighted to hear of the group of children who attended the local service of Remembrance and read prayers to the congregation. It shows the high levels of respect that the children can have and I was very proud of them Anti-Bullying Week All week the children have been taking part in activities around the theme Choose Respect. The whole week started with a worship led by Merlin class and some of our Anti-Bullying Ambassadors. Classes have been participating in a range of activities but all classes completed an activity where each child recorded one way that they would #ChooseRespect. These will be put up around the school on a number of displays either in corridors or in some of the classrooms. It will be very interesting to see the ways that they have chosen. All children have also been considering how it is easier to say that you will show respect rather than actually putting this into practice. Staffing It is with some sadness that I have to report that Mr Clark (our part time teacher in Owl class) will be leaving us at Christmas. He has decided to make a change and step out of teaching. I am sure that you will join me in wishing him every success in the future whatever that may bring. Mr Clark has worked at Scargill for five years and has been an important member of our staff team. We are working hard to ensure a replacement for Mr Clark is in place for the new year and we will be getting information to you as soon as we can. School Photographs Individual and family group photographs are being taken in school on 23 November 2018. We will organise groups during the day for any children who have siblings at school but if you have a child who is below school age that you want in the photograph as well, then please come into the old hall at
8.15am so that these can be done first. Access to school at this time will be through the Beech Lane entrance. Website We have been having some issues with our website over the past week and are pleased to confirm that it should now be up and running. PTA Our new PTA are busy organising things for the Christmas Winter Wonderland which will be on Friday 14 th December 2018 from 5pm-7pm. They are keen to retain lots of the great things from previous Christmas Fayres but also to try some new things. I hope that we get lots of people coming along and having a super time. I can t believe that we are already planning for Christmas but I know that these things do indeed take a long time to organise. The next PTA meeting is to be held at school on Wednesday 21 st November at 6.30pm. Anyone who wants to help out is welcome to come along. We are also asking for donations to help out with the stalls run by each of the year groups. All the details will be in a letter that will be sent out separately but just so that you have some notice we will be holding a Dress Down Day on Monday 3 rd December. On this day, children can wear festive jumpers if they want to and instead of paying anything we ask that they bring in a donation for one of the stalls. Scargill Citizen Award Last week we had our first Bronze Award of the year and it was lovely to see how pleased everyone across the school was for our first recipient. I thought that I would take the opportunity of reminding you about what our Scargill Citizen Award was and how the pupils can earn the certificates. We have ten Scargill citizen values that all children are constantly trying to work towards achieving. These include generosity, kindness, hardworking, respect, etc. Teachers award a dot sticker when they see a child demonstrating each quality on a sustained basis. When a child has five dot stickers for any one value then they can claim that particular value. When three values have been claimed a pupil gains a Bronze certificate, when three further values are claimed it results in a Silver certificate and when nine values are claimed then the pupil will get a Gold Award. This year in order to get our highest Platinum Award then all ten values must be claimed. This is extremely difficult to do and is a real achievement for any pupil. These awards start anew each September. School Council School Council have met a couple of times this year already. They have been very impressive in making decisions. A competition was launched in September to create window designs to represent our school's vision. The
children have now judged the competition and have asked Class Council discussions to be held to focus on planning a day to celebrate and promote our values. On this day, the competition winners will help put their designs on the four arched windows in the new hall. The School Council are also going to be working with the Y6 Play Leaders to help organise and look after some new playtime equipment.
