Dinaric Arc Parks project "Promoting regional cooperation in the Western Balkans through improved management of natural resources" 1. A vibrant, active regional collaboration network composed of agencies and staff responsible for protected areas management in Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, FYR Macedonia, Serbia, Kosovo* and Albania is established and fully functional by 2015. 2. Capacity building plan for the network, addressing key issues identified through completed protected areas management assessments, is developed and fully implemented Dinaric Arc Parks Learning Network by 2015. 3. Western Balkans/Dinaric Arc Parks network brand based on shared natural and cultural values is developed and widely promoted and is recognized within the region by 2015. 4 June 2012-2

Protected areas benefits A three stage process: 2012: background information and training materials 2012-2013: training professionals - to use methodology (PA Benefits Assessment Tool,PA-BAT) and prepare analysis for selected PAs in Dinaric Arc territory 2014: detailed information on PA benefits and inputs for lobbing materials 4 June 2012-3

Protected areas benefits 1. Introducing qualitative and quantitative methods for assessing PA benefits (Conference 2012, national WS 2013) 2. Using ecosystem benefits to build strong PA systems supported by local communities & Integrating ecosystems services and cultural values into management plans (2013) 3. Interpretation of benefits for PA practitioners, politicians, local stakeholders, tourists and the general public (2014) 4 June 2012-3

European Charter for Sustainable Tourism List of potential Protected Areas suitable for certification - European Charter for Sustainable Tourism (ECST) (March-May 2012) At least, 10 PAs to get involved in process of obtaining European Charter for Sustainable Tourism (June Dec 2012) Introduction of the process and benefits of obtaining European Charter for Sustainable Tourism & training for Selected PAs (Dec 2012) Individual work with PAs and guidance to the successful nomination for ECST (at least 5 PAs) - Europarc & WWF project team (2013 & 2014) Lobbying for financial support of PAs nominations and maintenance of ECST (2012, 2013 & 2014) 4 June 2012-3

Protected areas - EU Accession & Membership Estimated cost of Natura 2000 ~ 5,8 Bn/year Estimated direct benefits from Natura 2000 ~ 200-300 Bn/year. Cost of non implementiation of the Env. Acquis, EU nature & biodiversity policy ~ 50 Bn /year More benefits: clean drinkable water, positive effects on overexploited fish stocks, supports tourism, hazards prevention... Contribution to other relevant EU targets (Water Framework Directive, Marine Strategy Framework Directives 4 June 2012-7
