The cliffs of etretat The Côte d Albâtre (the Alabaster Coast) where the cliffs of Étretat are situated takes its name from the white colour of its chalk cliffs, which are part of the same geological system as the White Cliffs of Dover. Along this 140km coast, beloved of Impressionist painters, writers and musicians, including Monet, Courbet, Maupassant, Swinburne, Debussy and Roussel, the most emblematic and best-known viewing place is the Aiguille d Étretat. The bayeux tapestry This tremendously famous 70 metre-long tapestry follows the story of the epic conquest of England by William, Duke of Normandy (Called Guillaume in French). More than just a simple tale captured in cloth, it is a remarkable piece of art on a considerable scale, with needlework that is consistent throughout. It may visit England some time in 2020, but why not go and see it before then?

The city of rouen The capital of Normandy, Rouen has a population of almost 111,000. The well-preserved city centre, with its half-timbered houses and 100 bell-towers is a mustsee, but the real star of the town is its cathedral, the Cathédrale Notre Dame de Rouen. This remarkable example of Gothic architecture has witnessed many significant historical events, and hosts a chapel dedicated to Jeanne d Arc and a tomb containing the heart of Richard Lion Heart. Les Andelys The Chateau Gaillard was built by Richard Lion Heart in the 12th century, and took only two years to complete. Located 95 kilometres north-west of Paris, overlooking the river Seine, it changed hands several times during the Hundred Years War. It is made up of three enclosures separated by dry moats and is an impressive defensive structure with high and strong walls, although Richard Lion Heart boasted that he could defend it were the walls made of butter.
