Our BIG trip for this year is the British Virgin Islands week beginning October 26th. One hundred travelers from our yacht club will charter 20 boats in some of the most beautiful water in the world. Thanks from me already go to Jo and Grag Callaway and Shelly and Eddie Kaplan for serving as cruise leaders. What a big job it is and what a wonderful preparation they have already made for us. We'll be talking about this one for years. There are three Lunch Bunch cruises remaining: October 22 to Useppa Island, November 12 to Grama Dot's at Sanibel Marina and December 10th, a special Christmas rail dinner trip on the Mystery Train departing from Metro Parkway. There are also two more extended cruises following the BVI trip: November 15-17 a Naples Shopping Cruise led by Dee and Bob Moore and December 13-15 a weekend at Tarpon Point in Cape Coral led by Bob and Nancy Allen. The Welcome Back/Welcome Aboard annual party will on the docks on Sunday, November 10th beginning at 5:30. The Commodore's Ball is Saturday Night, December 7th. The river is pretty much fresh water at the moment and the water visibility is poor even in the bays and off the beaches. Inshore the good news is that some of our local fish species live very well even in these water conditions. Snook can now be harvested as of September 1 st and they are plentiful this time of year. Most anglers say that Snook is their favorite fish to eat. Small Threadfin Herrings can be cast-netted at the Sanibel Causeway and in the bays. Pinfish can also be cast-netted or purchased at local bait shops. Both make great Snook baits. For those not wanting to spend the time or money obtaining live baits, artificial lures of many kinds can successfully be used to catch Snook. Offshore the fishing has been pretty good and club members are catching their fair share of Grouper and Snapper. Shown in these photos are Ken Olson with an impressive 36 inch Cobia and David Hirshberg with a nice catch of Grouper. Terry Carlson, Ken Olson and I went offshore on Terry s 40 foot Cabo Express on Saturday, August 24 th and caught these Grouper on live Pinfish. On that same trip I caught a 6 foot Nurse Shark that broke my reel in the process. All in all the fishing in SW Florida is good for those willing to brave the heat and dodge the afternoon thunderstorms. We look forward to a new season of Fishing Club meetings beginning in November. Mark your calendars to join us the first Thursday of each month from November through April from 5-6 PM in the Marker 73 Café. Feel free to contact me at chip.graddy@gmail.com or (239) 340-5207 with any feedback or questions. Where Our Members Are Cruising by Greg Callaway Put-N-Bay The Key West of the Midwest Being Great Lakes cruisers and never making it to Lake Erie we where excited to visit Craig & May Lou Anderson for a long weekend at the famous Put-N-Bay in northern Lake Erie. The Anderson s graciously picked us up at the Toledo airport on Friday and we headed directly to Son-Rise Marina in Sandusky where the Andersons keep their Great Loop 45 Cruisers Tread-n-water North, then off to South Bass Island. It was a bit rough and it had rained the day before so we had no problem with dockage at the Crews Nest Marina & Yacht Club. Friday and Saturday afternoon we toured Put-N-Bay via golf cart and experienced the party atmosphere the bay is known for, that evening GHYC members Kerry & Marge Hansen came over from their northern home in Port Clinton to visit and enjoy dinner out. Sunday GHYC members Mike and Kathy Needler cruised over from Rattlesnake Island to pick all of us up in their 48 Sea Ray Express for a tour of the private Rattlesnake Island where they own a summer home. It is 85 acres with an air field, marina and country club where we enjoyed a great lunch poolside. Returning to Put-N-Bay we boarded Treadnwater and cruised back to Son-Rise Marina just in time to take the land cruiser to GHYC members Andy and Elissa Fiffick s waterfront home for a great cook-out and fish fry with friends and family. As always GHYC members share their hospitality in a big way and we are excited about Great Lakes cruising in our near future. Mark Your Calendar: WELCOME BACK/ WELCOME ABOARD PARTY SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 10TH, 2013 Details to follow later -- Looking forward to seeing everyone then Barb Hendricks For more pictures from current and past Club events, See Gail B s web page collection at... http://gulfharbouryachtclub.net/shoreside/general.htm Page 4

BVI Cruise Update ~ by The Cruise Leaders We will have a BVI Discussion at Boaters Night Thursday October 10 th at the Gulf Harbour Marina but you can also get updated information on the Gulf Harbour Yacht Club website, no log in requirements; Gulfharbouryachtclub.net...click on Cruising on the black strip on the top then Extended Cruises and scroll down to the BVI section. The handouts from prior meetings are there and if anything needs updating this is where we will post it. If you still have questions email me and we will post the answer for all see, realestsate@gulfharbourproperties.com BVI Fun and Games Jo Callaway, being aware of my aboriginal ancestry (it s true my Mother s maiden name was Rolfe and traced her family roots back to Pocohontas & John Rolfe you can look it up!!), asked me to do some research on the natives of the islands we now call the British Virgin Islands but known to Columbus as Saint Ursula and her Eleven Thousand Martyred Virgins. After extensive (you ll excuse the pun) digging I found that the original Ursulas used a language of symbols not unlike the hieroglyphics used by ancient Egyptians and recently, archaeologists unearthed the Ursula s own Rosetta Stone. I was given access to the stone, and have used it to compose a short message for your amusement. The Ursulas weren t big into sentence structure and punctuation so you will have to use your imagination But, I m getting ahead of myself Jo will explain it all when you get together in the Islands. Enjoy Capt. Walt Kittredge Page 5

Rear Commodore Report By Gary Morgan Greetings to all our GHYC Members. We hope you all have had a great summer and have enjoyed many hours of cruising in your given geography. Here in the Midwest we have enjoyed a cooler than normal summer coupled with a lot of rain. Sharyn and I are looking forward to returning to Florida in October for the BVI Extended Cruise, Hosted by the Callaway s and Kaplan s. Greg has informed me they have 25 vessels reserved and 100 people signed up to attend. The rest of 2013 the Extended Cruises include Bob and Dee Moore leading the Naples Shopping Cruise in November and the final cruise in December to Tarpon Point led by Bob and Nancy Allen. The following are the locations and dates that we are working on for Extended Cruises for 2014: Jan. 21-24 South Sea s Plantation Cruise leaders Jim and Karen Schenke, HJS3rd@bellsouth.net or karenschenck@ymail.com. We had such good feedback from last January s cruise to South Seas that our members have requested a return. We have 25 slips reserved with more available if needed. We also have 10 hotel rooms reserved at a group rate next to the Marina. Cruise Leaders TBD. Jan. 31-Feb.2 Fort Myers Art Festival- Another repeat from previous years, come and see what s new at the Fort Myers River District. New restaurants and shopping at the local Artist creations will be on the agenda. Bill and Melanie Jackman are leading this trip again; they do such a great job!!! Mid Feb. - This trip is still under development to the Sarasota / Long Boat Key area. Stay tuned. March 7-9 Fleet Inn Fleet Review- Hosted by the Silver Stars, a Memorial event to Honor members that have passed in the last 12 months. Vessel inspections will also be performed. April 3-7- Boca Grande, Useppa Island Club- The Boca Grande Marina has completely replaced all their slips this past summer. We have reserved the entire marina to accommodate our group. The last 2 nights will be at Useppa Island so we can enjoy the peace and quality of private island living. Cruise leaders TBD. There is always a chance for more Extended Cruises that could be added to our schedule if the opportunity presents itself. Please note, Tom Auda will become the responsible Flag Officer beginning 2014 for the Extended Cruise Program. The GHYC Board will be rolling out a new sign-up policy in November for Extended Cruises. In past seasons we were filling up several destinations where there were limited accommodations. We have been advised of other clubs that have policies that successfully deal with this problem. We believe you will be pleased with the results of what we have learned. Finally, don t forget about our affiliation with the Yachting Club of America. This added benefit to your GHYC membership will open many doors for your cruising pleasure. Page 6
