Austria Slovakia Vienna, Wine, Wind and Water Cycle Tour 2019 Individual Self-Guided 7 days/6 nights East of Vienna begins the fascinating landscape of the Pannonian Lowlands. The wonderful Donauauen Nature Reserve is host to one of the last primeval forests in Europe. You continue south in the direction of Lake Neusiedl, the Sea of Vienna. Gentle hills with vineyards, fields of reed and numerous small lakes with salty water surround this unique lake. Idyllic, typical villages with stork s nests can be found around the entire lake. This region offers the largest network of bike trails in Austria. It also houses a national park, where more than 250 different species of birds can be witnessed and observed. Enjoy the Puszta-Romance on a holiday in a national park, which has a mild climate until late fall, well equipped bike paths in a gorgeous picturesque landscape and incredible wildlife. Numerous swimming and leisure facilities are readily available. Lake Neusiedl is surrounded by winery villages, imposing castles and the historical Hungarian city of Sopron with its beautiful medieval city centre. After 4 days you will continue your travel to Bratislava, the Slovakian capital, with its charming city center and numerous sights.
Itinerary Day to Day Day 1: Vienna Individual arrival to Vienna. Day 2: Vienna - Petronell Carnuntum/surrounding area 46 km The Danube cycling path leads you on peaceful path through the National Park Donauauen through the former Roman city Petronell-Carnuntum until the health resort town Bad Deutsch Altenburg. The vineyards of Carnuntum offer you countless delights. Day 3: Petronell-Carnuntum/surrounding area Podersdorf 35 km You say Good Bye to the Danube and bike southwards in direction of Lake Neusiedl. Passing grain, sunflower fields and vineyards you will reach the Steppe lake with its unique flora and fauna. Day 4 and 5: Podersdorf ROUTING SUGGESTIONS: Lake Neusiedl bike path 50 km Along the bike path you ll find picturesque villages and quaint towns through slightly hilly landscapes until you arrive in Rust, The Village of the Storks. Return back to Podersdorf by ferry and enjoy the cozy warm shafts of the sunlight. Wine and Culture cycle path 43 km The wines from this region are very distinct and delicious. During your ride through the extensive vineyards and rolling hills you will enjoy the wonderful lake view. The castle of Halbturn is renowned and the most significant Baroque building in all of Burgenland. Maybe you ll see the coloured bee eaters which are breeding in sandy holes during the summer.
Day 4 and 5: Podersdorf ROUTING SUGGESTIONS: Lacken bike path 48 km "Lacken" (little lakes) are worth visiting. Most of them are less than 50 cm deep and partly consist of salt water. These "Lacken" are the reason for the variety of flora in this region. You will pass by swamps, reed fields and vineyards, where the grapes are acclaimed worldwide for high level wines. Today is also the perfect day for a side trip to the St. Martins Thermal bath one of Austria s most beautiful thermal baths. Day of rest Take a day to relax and regenerate. Enjoy the lake with its numerous leisure facilities, such as sailing, surfing or swimming. Joining the hotel s wellness area would be another option. Sopron/Hungary 60 km The ferry takes you to the southern town of festival Mörbisch. You continue cycling on to the Hungarian side of the lake and reach Sopron, which is located near the border. Sopron is a city that is rich of historical heritage and which has many sights to see. A special recommendation near the Austrian-Hungarian border is the winegrower house Raspi in the town of Fertöràkos. The menu card starts with fillets of lamb and presents lots of different, exquisite specialities. Cherry-Blossom bike path 43 km Start today s journey by ferry to the other side of the lake. You will be guided alongside vineyards and extensive cherry orchards. Wonderful views over the Hungarian Lowlands will be a reward for you after a few short uphill stretches on today s tour. Return by ferry back to Podersdorf. Day 6: Podersdorf - Bratislava 40 km Today you will leave the unique nature of this natural park and bike towards north back to the mighty river The Danube. Bratislava, today s capital of Slovakia and former coronation town of Hungary will enchant you. High above the Danube you can see the castle of Bratislava. Day 7: Bratislava - Vienna Extension in Bratislava or bus ride back to Vienna (included).
