Bulletin Volume 90 No 22 Monday November 19 2018 Rotary Club of Sale Rotary District 9820 Incorporated www.rotaryclubofsale.org.au Last Meeting: Chairman: Rod Exton Sergeant: Danny O Brien Guest Speakers: Lance Mitchell Monday November 19 Cave Diving Lance Mitchell Guest speaker Lance Mitchell with President Jeanette and secretary Laurie in the background.
Guest speaker Lance Mitchell was introduced by Chairman Rod. Lance, a past president of the Australian Cave Diving Association, gave us a in depth insight into the thrills and fascination of this unusual sport. He outlined the various types of caves that are explored by participants from the relatively straight forward sink hole such as the Blue Lake in Mount Gambier to incredibly difficult multi layered penetration caves. All participants undergo rigorous training and must qualify before being allowed to dive. Safety standards are very high and rigorously enforced. High tensile lines were one of the many safety protocols developed by the Association. Members enjoyed the unusual spectacle of Keith and Laurie s efforts during a blindfolded test of their skills at maneuvering in the dark. President Jeanette thanked Lance with a presentation to remind him of his time with us.

Combined AGM. ROTARY CLUBS OF SALE and SALE CENTRAL SPECIAL ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Meeting Minutes - Saturday 17 th November 2018 David Strauss opened the meeting and welcomed all members from both Clubs. He then informed all who would be the inaugural office bearers for the merged club for 2019. President Raj Mani President Elect/Vice President - Phillip Davis Secretary Jeanette Henwood Treasurer John Cartledge. The Director/Board member positions will be deferred until the new Club President has consulted with the merged clubs. Andrew Bradley and Jeanette Henwood presented a briefing on the proposed amalgamation: Andrew explained that discussions regarding the merger had in effect started around 3 years ago and in those 3 years all that had happened was membership declined. Following the merger, in theory we would have more people to assist with existing and future projects. There will be greater diversity within the club and Sale would have one Rotary Club not two with which the members of public would more than likely relate to. Jeanette said there will be an increase in the core of active members, the community projects would then be serviced by one club with the opportunity for an increase in image and improved public relations. This improvement in image could lead to the club having a more diverse range of speakers leading to the possibility for potential new members. Possible problems with merger are a clash of cultures and personalities Tension within the club is possible as there may be different attitudes towards problem solving If there is to be no merger then there is a possibility that in the longer term neither club would survive. Andrew Bradley and Jeanette Henwood both agreed on the following points: Merging doesn t solve the current membership numbers new members are needed The club needs to actively recruit membership, this should be the priority for going ahead as a united front. New members most likely will be drafted by the projects Rotary undertakes not the fellowship, the fellowship would follow and in turn the profile of the Rotary Club of Sale should lift (going Up). Future steps for new club are: Tuesday night will be meeting night Tuesday night will be held at the WINNING POST Restaurant at the Greyhound Track Until the merger is official the meetings will joint club meetings. Q and A regarding amalgamation followed: Keith Miller to set up the roster
Laurie Smyth will become the club historian, Andrew McDonald to supply him with an electronic copy of the Rotary Club of Sale Central history The transfer of all Rotary Club of Sale Central to Rotary Club of Sale will be undertaken in a controlled fashion, noting there is a container for storage at Laser Plumbing The Rotary Club of Sale Central may be dissolved with all club members moving to the Rotary Club of Sale A point was raised as to which was the preferred recruitment process, was it Projects creates fellowship or the reverse? The reply was projects create fellowship. An around the floor individual comment on the merger then took place allowing each member present to voice either their approval or disapproval on amalgamation of the two clubs. IT S TIME TO VOTE.
