Numerous archaeological findings in the area testify to a long human presence since fargone times. The strategic position at the centre of the Tyrrhenian Sea made it a precious location to early sea dwellers and required protection using towers to ward off the constant threat from the sea. One of the most infamous occasions relates to the looting and pillaging carried out by Redbeard in 1544. Under Spanish control the location was transformed into an important war machine boasting numerous fortifications. In this way the Stato dei Presidi was created, including the towns of Orbetello, Porto Ercole, Porto S.Stefano and Talamone to which the stronghold of Piazza Longone was added in the XVII century. The promontory is like a small mountain in the sea, characterised by steep rocky coastlines allowing for breathtaking views. In this landscape covered by thick Mediterranean vegetation alternating with rows of vines, olives and fruit trees, it is also possible to spot the dwarf palm which grows spontaneously here. The vineyards are all hewn from terraces carved into the side of the slopes, and give home to the rare Ansonico and Riminese vines. The local economy was once exclusively based on fishing but today finds tourism as its principal resource, making use of the exquisite beauty and excellent gastronomic delights which make this place unique.
