Proceedings of the Regional Preparatory Meeting for the 2017 meetings of the conferences of the Parties to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions for the Central and Eastern European and Central Asian region Riga, Latvia, 21 to 23 March 2017 Background In order to assist Parties in preparing for the back-to-back meetings of the conferences of the Parties in 2017, the conferences of the Parties to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions requested the Executive Secretary of the conventions to support regional meetings to assist regional preparatory processes, coordinated with other regional meetings (decisions BC-12/23, RC-7/13 and SC-7/31). The regional preparatory meetings for the 2017 COPs are being held back to back with working sessions to address regional specific issues related to ratification and early implementation of the Minamata Convention on Mercury. The regional preparatory meetings have been organized in close cooperation with the bureaux members of the concerned regions. 1. The regional preparatory meeting for the 2017 meetings of the conferences of the Parties (COPs) to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions for the Central and Eastern European and Central Asian region was held in the al Protection and Regional Development, Riga, Latvia, from 21 to 23 March 2017. The meeting was held back-to-back with a regional working session of the Minamata Convention on Mercury held on 24 March 2017, at the same venue. 2. The regional preparatory meeting was hosted by the Government of Latvia and organized thanks to the generous support of the Government of Switzerland, with support from the Basel and Stockholm conventions regional centre in Slovakia. 3. The objective of the meeting was to provide an opportunity to participants to familiarize themselves with the items on the provisional agendas of the COPs as well as the tentative organization of work of the meetings. It also aimed at enabling Parties to discuss regional priorities and regional positions for the meetings. The programme of the meeting is set out in annex I to the present proceedings. 4. The meeting was attended by a total of 67 participants, including 55 representatives from 26 Central and Eastern European and Central Asian country Parties and 12 representatives from observer organizations. The list of participants is set out in annex II to the present proceedings. 5. Participants exchanged views on the 2017 COPs meeting documents for those agenda items that were part of the programme of the Central and Eastern European and Central Asian regional preparatory meeting.
