Optional Pre-Voyage Arctic 19 Australia Norway 2019 Optional pre-voyage, 6-day Norway Tour Day 1: Arrival in Oslo, transfer to Hotel. After the long flights, we will have time to relax in our rooms after check-in. Late afternoon we will embark on an evening boat tour, exploring the waterways and fjords of Oslo, whilst feasting on buckets of traditional shrimps, Accommodation at Scandic Oslo City or similar. Day 2: Oslo - Breakfast in the hotel. We have a full day of touring Oslo, seeing the many well known sights such as the Vigeland Sculpture Park, the Viking Ship Museum, and the Munch Museum. Accommodation at Scandic Oslo City or similar. Day 3: Oslo Myrdal Flåm (train) Breakfast at the hotel. Morning departure from Oslo by train. The journey from Oslo to Myrdal is part of the Oslo Bergen railway, classed as one of the finest train journeys in the world. This railway connects the two largest cities in Norway and shows the diversity of the Norwegian landscape. In Myrdal you will change to the Flåm Railway. The Flåm Railway passes through wild and beautiful mountain scenery with waterfalls and steep mountain sides from a height of 900 meters and down to the Sognefjord. There is no other adhesion railway in the world running on normal tracks that is so steep over a long distance. Accommodation at Fretheim hotel or similar. Day 4: Flåm Sognefjord Bergen (train / boat / bus) Breakfast at the hotel. From Flåm you continue by boat on the Nærøyfjord to Gudvangen. The Nærøyfjord is the narrowest fjord channel in Europe, and has recently been added to UNESCO s World Heritage List. From Gudvangen the journey continues by bus through Nærøyfjord Valley and up the Stalheimskleiva, with its 13 steep hairpin bends (Stalheimskleiva is only open during the summer). The last part of the excursion will be by train from Voss to Bergen, Norway s second largest city and the world s only city surrounded by 7 mountains and 7 fjords. Accommodation at Grand Hotel Terminus or similar. Day 5: Bergen Breakfast at the hotel. This day is on your own leisure. Bergen is, with good reason, called the Gateway to the Fjords. The city is located on the west coast of Norway with close proximity to the famous Norwegian fjords. Sights of interest are the Hanseatic Bryggen Harbour, Fløibanen Funicular, Troldhaugen, the Fish and Flower market, Bergen Aquarium and Gamle Bergen (Old Bergen Open Air Museum). Accommodation at Grand Hotel Terminus or similar. Day 6: Departure from Bergen flight to Longyearbyen via Oslo, Breakfast in the hotel. Depart Bergen (BGO) 08:00 arrive 12:40 Longyearbyen (LYR) hotel night, Longyearbyen, afternoon and next day to explore this ancient mining town before boarding the vessel.

Optional Pre-Voyage Arctic 19 Longyearbyen, Svalbard The name Svalbard is an old name (going back to at least the 1100s) meaning cold coasts. Longyearbyen, Svalbard s only true town, was founded by an American in 1906. It has a little over 2000 inhabitants. Svalbard is an archipelago made up of 4 main islands, and almost 150 smaller islands, off the north coast of Norway. Almost 65% of Svalbard is a protected nature reserve or a national park, it has the world s third biggest ice sheet, coming behind only Antarctica and Greenland. Svalbard is located in the high Arctic and shares the Arctic s designation as a technical desert when it comes to annual precipitation (or lack thereof). Particularly the eastern part of Svalbard sees relatively little precipitation annually. The west coast sees more in the form of rain and snow. Depending on when you take your Svalbard cruise you can expect temperatures to average anywhere from -14 C in the winter to 6 C in the summer.

Arctic 19 History The MS Polarfront was a Norwegian ship located in the North Atlantic. She was laid down on the 1 st of August, 1975 and was launched the following year. MS Polarfront was the last remaining weather ship in the world, she did regular service since the 60 s, up until the 1 st of January 2010, where she was removed from service, after the announcement that the station was being cancelled. She was totally refurbished in 2016/2017 and re-emerged as a boutique luxury expedition ship. She is now owned and operated by a French shipping company, and specialises in expedition voyages in the Polar high latitudes Specifications Length: 55 metres Width 10 metres Draught: 4.2 metres Speed: 10 knots Capacity: 12 passengers Crew: 9 members + guides

Arctic 19 Arrival Day: The Northern-most town in the World You touch down in Longyearbyen, the administrative centre of Spitsbergen, the largest island of the Svalbard Archipelago. Afternoon and next day to explore this former mining town. A bus tour to our World s Seed Vault, Sled-dog mushing tour, and a visit to the Parish Church and Svalbard Museum make for fascinating attractions. Day 1: The Voyage Begins In the early evening the ship sails out of Isfjorden, where you might spot the first minke whale of your voyage. Day 2: Sailing the West Coast Heading north along the west coast, you arrive by morning in Krossfjorden. Here you might board the Zodiacs for a cruise near the towering blue-white face of the Fourteenth of July Glacier. On the green slopes near the glacier, colorful flowers bloom while flocks of kittiwakes and Brünnich s guillemots nest on the cliffs. You have a good chance of spotting an Arctic fox scouting for fallen chicks, or a bearded seal paddling through the fjord. In the afternoon you sail to Ny Ålesund, the northernmost settlement on Earth. Once a mining village served by the world s most northerly railway you can still see its tracks Ny Ålesund is now a research center. Close to the community is a breeding ground for barnacle geese, pink-footed geese, and Arctic terns. And if you re interested in the history of Arctic exploration, visit the anchoring mast used by polar explorers Amundsen and Nobile in their airships, Norge (1926) and Italia (1928). Day 3: The Massive Monaco Glacier Near the mouth of Liefdefjorden, you step ashore for a walk across the tundra of Reindyrsflya. You may also sail into the fjord and cruise within sight of the 5-kilometer-long (3.1 miles) face of the precipitous Monaco Glacier. The waters in front of this glacier are a favorite feeding spot for thousands of kittiwakes, and the base of the ice is a popular polar bear hunting ground. If ice conditions prevent sailing here early in the season, an alternate route along the west coast of Spitsbergen can be implemented. Day 4-5: Stop at the Seven Islands The northernmost point of your voyage may be north of Nordaustlandet, in the Seven Islands. Here you reach 80 north, just 540 miles from the geographic North Pole. Polar bears inhabit this region, so the ship may park for several hours among the pack ice to watch for them. When the edge of this sea ice is tens of miles north of the Seven Islands (mostly in August), you can spend a second day in this area. Alternatively (mostly in July) you may turn to Sorgfjord, where you have the chance to find a herd of walruses not far from the graves of 17th century whalers. A nature walk here can bring you close to families of ptarmigans, and the opposite side of the fjord is also a beautiful area for an excursion.

Arctic 19 Day 6: Hinlopen Highlights Today you sail into Hinlopen Strait, home to bearded and ringed seals as well as polar bears. At the entrance there is even the possibility to spot blue whales. As with Liefdefjorden, you can take an alternate west Spitsbergen route if ice prevents entry into Hinlopen. After cruising among the ice floes of Lomfjordshalvøya in the Zodiacs, you then view the bird cliffs of Alkefjellet with their thousands of Brünnich s guillemots. On the east side of Hinlopen Strait, you may attempt a landing where reindeer, pink-footed geese, and walruses are likely sights. Near Torrelneset you can also visit the polar desert of Nordaustlandet, next to the world s third-largest ice cap. Here you may encounter walruses during a coastline hike over the area s raised beaches. Day 7: The Bounties of Barentsøya The plan is to make landings in Freemansundet, though polar bears sometimes make this impossible. Potential stops on Barentsøya include Sundneset (for an old trapper s hut), Kapp Waldburg (for its kittiwake colony), and Rindedalen (for a walk across the tundra). You might also cruise south to Diskobukta, though Kapp Lee is more likely your destination. On Kapp Lee is a walrus haul-out, Pomor ruins, and the chance for hikes along Edgeøya. Day 8: Land of the Pointed Mountains You start the day by cruising the side fjords of the Hornsund area of southern Spitsbergen, taking in the spire-like peaks: Hornsundtind rises 1,431 meters (4,695 feet), and Bautaen is a perfect illustration of why early Dutch explorers named this island Spitsbergen, meaning pointed mountains. There are 14 sizable glaciers in this area as well as opportunities for spotting seals, beluga whales, and polar bears. Day 9: Beluga Beach Today you land on Ahlstrandhalvøya, at the mouth of Van Keulenfjorden. Here piles of beluga skeletons, the remains of 19th century whale slaughter, are a haunting reminder of the consequences of rampant exploitation. Fortunately belugas were not hunted into extinction, and you have a good chance of coming across a pod. Cruising into Bellsund during the afternoon, you can then explore tundra at the head of the fjord, where reindeer like to feed. Day 10: Journey s End in Longyearbyen Every adventure, no matter how grand, must eventually come to an end. You disembark in Longyearbyen for your flight home, but with memories that will accompany you wherever your next adventure lies.

Optional Post-Voyage Arctic 19 OPTIONAL SELF-DRIVE, 9-DAY TOUR OF ICELAND Check this out: Around Iceland "Drone' Video Iceland Self-drive Full Circle. Classic extended trip that passes Iceland's nature treasures including national parks, spectacular waterfalls, giant glaciers, impressive volcanoes, hot springs and geothermal pools. For off-road vehicles there is a possibility to drive on Iceland's most beautiful highland road in central Iceland. Route Length : 1800 km. (Nearly) Season: All Year Round Cost: Circa $AU 4,490 per person, twin-share comfort accommodation, 2-share Toyota Yaris, add $AU 1,000 for upgrade to Toyota RAV4 Day 1 - Landing - Pick up car at Airport Reykjavik You will pick up the car at the airport and then drive to Reykjavik for express check-in and the initial arrangements at the hotel. The rest of the day, you will spend walking around Reykjavik, which is the capital city of Iceland and cultural, governance and trade center of the country. It is recommended to go down to the Gulf of Reykjavik and breathe in the fresh Icelandic air. The city's opera house called Harpa ("Harp" in Icelandic) is located on the waterfront. This is a unique structure made of glass that changes colors according to the sun's reflection. The structure Perla (The Pearl) located on a hill in the eastern part of the city provides a beautiful view of 360 degrees of Reykjavik as well as the option to dine in the revolving restaurant located there... Today's main sites: Reykjavik. Accommodation: Reykjavik

Optional Post-Voyage Arctic 19 Day 2 - Golden Circle - Three classic Icelandic landmarks. You will leave Reykjavik and head northeast to the Thingvellir National Park (Þingvellir) - UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is the place, where the tectonic plates of Europe and America meet together and here the first gatherings of the Icelandic Parliament, which is the oldest parliament in the world, took place. Later you will arrive to geyser Strokkur and admire its eruptions that happen every 12 minutes. In addition, here Geysir is located: it gave its name to the concept of "geyser" that describes the phenomenon of hot spring in which boiling water and steam are sent in a form of a tall column into the air. A bit eastward from there, Gullfoss Waterfall is located. This royal waterfall falls into two cascades close to each other, and urges the spectacular view. There are other interesting sites in this area: crater Creed and waterfall Faxi and we will visit them too. Estimated driving distance: 250 km. Today's major sites: Thingvellir National Park - Geysir - Gullfoss waterfall. Optional activities: diving in Silfra - jet boat cruise. Accommodation: Selfoss

Optional Post-Voyage Arctic 19 Day 3 - Panoramic view over the south coast - Seljalandsfoss Waterfall - black sand beach in Vik. Today we will walk along the beautiful south coast stretching along the mountains with the sloping coastline at the river mouth. We will reach the Seljalandsfoss Waterfall and watch it falling down from the front and from behind since its rock formation has created a trail, which allows walking behind the waterfall. We will pass near the famous volcano Eyjafjallajökull, the eruption of which in 2010 led to the fact that all the flights were grounded in the whole Northern Hemisphere. Another waterfall we will see today is Skógafoss, it is falling from a height of 60 meters and on a sunny day, double rainbow is shimmering from its bottom. Since the waterfall flow is falling into a flat area, you can walk closely to it and "merge" into the rainbow. We will reach the village Vik that is the southernmost point of the island of Iceland. Dyrhólaey Cliff is located not far from there and is a wonderful place to watch the many sea birds such as the various species of sea gulls and puffins of different colors. Vik beaches are the black sand beaches; the walk along the waterfront will expose us to the exciting view of the black sand in the contrast of the deep blue color of the sea. We will stop at the Kirkjubaejarklaustur village with a hard to pronounce name that does not indicate its picturesque simplicity, the village with the beautiful mountains and rivers that extend around it and make your heart fall in love with it. Just in a short distance from the village, you can walk on the hexagonal basalt floor created by the volcanic eruption called Kirkjugólfið, the meaning of this word is the church-floor. Estimated driving distance: 220 km. Today's main sites: waterfalls Skogarfoss and Seljalandsfoss - Cliff Dyrhólaey Optional activities: Snow scooters on the Myrdalsjokull glacier, Skogar Museum Accommodation: Kirkjubaejarklaustur.

Optional Post-Voyage Arctic 19 Day 4 - The wilderness at the Skaftafell National Park - glacial lagoon - glacier Vatnajökull. We will drive on Route 1, where from one side of the road there is a plateau with the delta of the rivers and on the other side extends Vatnajökull glacier, a huge block of ice, which is the largest glacier in Europe. We will enter the nature reserve of the Skaftafell National Park, there are many hiking trails leading to the eye-catching sites, like a black waterfall and panoramic viewpoints over the glacier. Not far from the park is located the Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon considered one of the most beautiful sites in Iceland and a landmark that will undoubtedly be engraved in your memory as one of the most beautiful places you've ever visited. The Glacial Lagoon contains a huge glacier pieces that broke away from the adjacent glacier and float slowly into the sea. This dynamic postcard of the nature changing constantly its form and the seals swimming in the waters of the lagoon certainly will not leave you indifferent. In the summer, you can go on a cruise among the icebergs in the amphibian boat. Estimated driving distance: 210 km. Today's main sites: Park Skaftafell - Jökulsárlón Ice Lagoon. Optional activities: cruise in the Ice Lagoon snow scooter tour on the glacier Vatnajökull. Accommodation: Höfn.

Optional Post-Voyage Arctic 19 Day 5 - The East Fjords - "Far East of Iceland". We will spend this day traveling along the East Fjords. This region was isolated once, when the land transport was limited and the relations of the residents of the East Fjords with the ships coming from Europe were more developed than with the rest of Iceland. Among Icelanders, every fjord has its own story and its unique nature and inhabitants. Even a stranger visiting this area would feel it. Bird watching and photography enthusiasts are welcome to enjoy the cruise to the island of Papey, where they can watch colonies of sea puffins that stay at the island during their nesting season until mid-august. Ferry from Denmark reaches the charming village Seyðisfjörður once a week. This village is known for the wooden houses built on the edge of the fjord that look like they were taken from a fairy tale. East Fjords are abundant with the trees, unlike the rest of Iceland, and are unique as only in this part of Iceland there are wild herds of north reindeer wandering in the area. Estimated driving distance: 300 km. Today's main sites: East Fjords - Egilsstaðir - puffin colonies. Optional activities: Petra's stone museum - cruise to Papey Island Accommodation: Egilsstaðir

Optional Post-Voyage Arctic 19 Day 6 Europe s most powerful waterfall - volcanoes - Lake Mývatn - summer home of the water birds. Day 6 Europe s most powerful waterfall - volcanoes - Lake Mývatn - summer home of the water birds. We will say goodbye to the East Fjords and turn northward all the way to the Dettifoss waterfall, which is the most powerful waterfall in Europe. Watching the furious and mighty flow of the waterfall is an amazing experience, that will make each one of you feel insignificant and small compared to the power of the water. Another meeting with the forces of nature today will be in the area of the volcano Krafla that despite the fact that his last eruption was in 1984, the landscape around it is full of steaming lava and the volcanic riots create a view dazzling the senses. A few minutes' drive away, is located the geothermal field Namafjall with pits of boiling mud and sulfur. Mývatn is the perfect place to get us some peace and quiet. Around the lake a great variety of water birds spend the summer and as an addition to this beautiful scenery, near the lake there are "dark castles" of Dimmuborgir, known in folklore of Iceland as the home of the Gnomes of Christmas. Estimated driving distance: 200 km. Today's main sites: Mývatn. Optional activities: Mývatn geothermal nature baths - whale watching cruise. Accommodation: Husavik \ Mývatn.

Optional Post-Voyage Arctic 19 Day 7 - Akureyri the capital of the North - Icelandic horses in Skagafjörður. Day 7 - Akureyri the capital of the North - Icelandic horses in Skagafjörður. On our way west we will stop to watch the waterfall Godafoss, name of which means in Icelandic "the waterfall of the Gods", and the sight is heavenly indeed. From there we will turn from the nature landscape to Akureyri the magnificent northern capital of Iceland. In Akureyri there are many attractions including a botanical garden, golf surfaces, open sea cruises and plenty of restaurants and cafes. We will pass Öxnadalur - mountain pass with its sharp peaks that look like they have been cut by a human hand. From there we will reach the region Skagafjordur known by some of the finest and the most beautiful Icelandic horses, which are bred here. Even if you will not ride the horse, you can still watch them galloping in a meadow on the sides of roads. This region is abundant with the rivers and lakes brimming with fish and swans cruising above it. To learn a little about how the daily life was in Iceland many centuries ago, you can visit the museum of the grass houses Glaumbær. Estimated driving distance: 220 km. Today's main sites: waterfall Godafoss - Akureyri - Skagafjörður Mountain Ridge. Optional activities: horse riding tour. Accommodation: Skagafjörður

Optional Post-Voyage Arctic 19 Day 8 - Waterfall Hraunfossar (Lava Waterfall) the cradle of Icelandic sagas - Reykjavik. Day 8 - Waterfall Hraunfossar (Lava Waterfall) the cradle of Icelandic sagas - Reykjavik. From Skagafjordur we will move on facing the western Iceland, after passing Borgarnes, we will continue to Reykholt. We will make a stop at the hot springs in Deildartunguhver. This is the biggest hot springs site in Europe. From there, before we get further west, we can make a detour around the Vastnes peninsula and see the Hvítserkur an impressive rock rising from the sea, according to the Icelandic sagas, it was originally a scary troll that became a rock when it was exposed to the sunlight. Around this peninsula, you can see herds of seals on sunny days sunbathing on the rocks sticking out from the sea. We will continue westward, to the cradle of the Icelandic sagas, there started a large part of the great and important traditions of the Western world. Lava Waterfall's (Hraunfossar) long splashes of rocks are located in the area near the Europe's largest geothermal water well the provider of water at minimal cost to all the nearby residents. In the village Borgarnes we can make a stop before we complete the whole circle and be back onto the Route 1 to Reykjavik. Estimated driving distance: 280 km. Day 9 - Reykjavik - Keflavik (flight). This day and until your flight back home, we will dedicate to the capital of Iceland, Reykjavik. The car will be returned at the airport before your flight.
