All about visits in Budapest Subject Specific Visits All suggested visits on our programmes are provided with the co-operation of the companies concerned and are subject to availability. In order to maintain a good relationship with our suppliers, we are unable to book visits prior to receiving a firm booking form. Due to the popularity of certain visits, we advise you to book as early as possible to avoid disappointment. In the unlikely event of a visit cancellation, we will do our utmost to replace it suitably. Industrial visits are not available at weekends. Unless specifically agreed by us the teacher has responsibility for teaching. Study Visit Fees We charge a fee for arranging technical visits (e.g. breweries, factories, wine producers, stock exchange, company visits, food production). The fee: is available on request, and includes a guide and coach where required and are charged per paying person per visit. Please note that entrance costs, if applicable, are not included these are payable locally On all visits where a study visit fee is applicable, it will be shown on this list with this symbol: Museum Visits European Study Tours is delighted to offer a complimentary museum booking service of 4 museums. Should you wish us to book any more museums for you, an administration charge of 10 per museum will be charged. Please bear in mind that museums in Budapest are closed on certain days, so please plan in advance for this. Entrance Fees Unless you are informed otherwise, entrance fees are always payable locally for all visits. For student rate entrance to museums in Budapest it is essential that you bring along with you a letter printed on your school s headed paper, confirming your status as teachers and students. This letter should include a list of all students and teachers names and dates of birth. It can also facilitate entrance for the students if you have a list of names with the name of the course they are studying. 2

BUSINESS, ICT AND ECONOMICS Interspar Hypermarkets www.interspar.hu The market share of the hypermarkets has increased dramatically in Hungary. The big players are Interspar, Tesco, Cora, Auchan, as well as the Swiss Metro. These chains have brought competitive capitalism to Hungary, with all of its aggressive marketing. The visit at Interspar gives insight into the trends of customers' habits in Hungary, techniques of pricing and customers' relations. Promontorvin Cellars The tour consists of a history of the cellars as well as the methods of wine-production and storage. Certain corridors of the system are architectural curiosities. Business School / College Visit This secondary school educates clerks on different levels for banks and post offices. During the visit, a teacher will present the school and the group will then participate in an English lesson that takes place in the language lab. visit, Central location. 4

BUSINESS, ICT AND ECONOMICS Körte-Organica The company operates a living sewage treatment plant in a southern suburb of Budapest by the Danube. A tour of the plant is more interesting for its ecological value than for being directly business studies related. Coach required: approx 45 minutes from Budapest Visit Duration: Approx 1 ½ Hours MAV (Hungarian Railways) Located north of Budapest, the plant maintains and reconstructs the carriages and engines of the Hungarian Railways as well as designs and produces railway carriages and spare parts. Coach required: approx 90 minutes from Budapest Visit Duration: Approx 1 ½ Hours Paks Nuclear Power Station www.npp.hu/index-e.htm Starting in the Visitors centre, a virtual tour is given and groups can see what is happening in the control room, in the reactor hall and around the generators. Simple activities may be given, such as students switching on solar cells and watch the result. There is an observation room, with an arched glass roof, providing a view over the power plant, concluding in the operational plant. Coach required: approx 90 minutes from Budapest Visit Duration: Approx 1 ½ Hours Zwack Unicum Rt www.zwack.hu Zwack Unicum Rt produces a bitter, similar to "Jaegermester" or "Underberg" for over 100 years. The company has recently been reprivatised, making it a Hungarian success story. The tour will explain the production process as well as the technology and economics of the company while showing the distillation and bottling process in action. Visit their offices to see what this entails. Suzuki Car Factory Visit the Suzuki Car Factory in Esztergom, 55km from Budapest. The company employs a team of electrical engineers who are specialised in hardware, software and system development. visit, GE Technologies As part of GE Hungary Ltd. employing 11,000 people, this visit will explore how GE s divisions of Technology Infrastructure and Energy operate four factories (Aviation, Energy, Healthcare and Water) in three cities, and also a regional headquarters and two technology centres in Hungary. visit, 6

Art and Design Guided Walk in the Castle area incl. National Gallery This guided walk will reveal the hidden secrets of the Old City. A part of the tour is a visit to the National Gallery, located in the former Royal Palace, exhibiting Hungarian paintings. Guide cost: 100 per group Entrance fee for school groups: 5 per person Backstage of the Hungarian State Opera The neo-renaissance opera is impressive on the outside, but its interior is breathtaking. The auditorium was designed by eminent architect Miklós Ybl and decorated by some of the most distinguished painters of the age. A guided tour of the building led by a team of young and knowledgeable guides. Guide cost: 100 per group Entrance fee for school groups: 7.50 per person Museum of Contemporary Art www.ludwigmuseum.hu As well as exhibits by Warhol, Rauschenberg, Lichtenstein and Jasper Johns there are works by Hungarian artists from the past three decades. As part of the Ludwig collection three late works of Picasso are also exhibited here. Guided tours are possible by appointment. Central Location. Closed Mondays Tues Sun : 10am 8pm Museum of Fine Art www.museum.hu The museum is home to a magnificent Spanish collection, which has recently been reorganised to show El Greco and works from Madrid and Andalucia with their respective schools. Other highlights include an excellent Venetian collection with works by Titian, Raphael and Leonardo on display. Free for EU citizens, dependant upon exhibition (perm/temp) Central Location. Closed Mondays National Gallery www.mng.hu Contains chronicles Hungarian art, of particular notability are the winged alter-pieces, depictions of Hungarian history as well of examples of every major art movement. Memento Park (formerly Statue Park) www.mementopark.hu This is the world's only such collection from the period of communist rule since the collapse and the statues of communist leaders were removed from the streets. The statues of Lenin, Marx and Engels, Dimitrov as well as memorials to The Soviet Soldier can be seen at the park. History and Politics Budapest History Museum www.bhm.hu The museum displays artifacts, photographs and exhibits, covering all aspects of the city s rich history. Also includes Budapest in Modern Times, which tracks the city s identity as a Guided tours available. Central location. Closed Mondays Tues Sun; 10am 6pm The Jewish Museum At the end of the exhibition, in a room draped in black, photos and clippings document the insanity of the Holocaust in Hungary. The site of the museum was the birthplace of Theodor Herzl (1860-1904), father of Zionism. Guided Visit of Parliament An architectural echo of the Houses of Parliament of London, this neo-gothic edifice expressed the country's robust self-confidence at the beginning of the 20th century. When Hungary's House of Lords was abolished, members of Parliament have convened only in the southern wing of the building. Parliament also contains the crown jewels of Hungary. House of Terror www.terrorhaza.hu The exhibition provides students of history the chance to understand the logic and realise the implications of both the fascist and communist regimes, the significance of which reaches further than the Hungaian borders. Hungarian National Museum www.hnm.hu The oldest museum in Budapest illustrates the history of Hungary from the time of King Stephan the country s first king, continuing through the Ottoman occupation to the World Wars and the rise of the dictatorship. It is designed to improve motor skills and increase independence of many aspects of common living. Conductive education was developed at the Pető Institute over 40 years ago. Coach recommended University of Horticulture and Food Industry The university is one of the prominent places of European horticultural and food industrial teaching. During the visit a teacher presents the university and shows round the group (laboratory, garden etc). 10

Media Studies Duna Television A visit at this broadcasting company will introduce students to the world of making television programmes and shows the techniques and equipment used. Guide included Visit Duration: 90 minute visit Printing Works Hungary is known for relatively low printing costs, a visit will be organised for groups to printing works such as Kossuth, who produce books, newspapers and flyers. Visits will only be accepted from groups who study printing related subjects, such as journalism, graphic design or advertising. Guide included Visit Duration: 60 minute visit Daily Newspaper A visit to a daily Budapest newspaper such as the Budapesti Nap will introduce students to the daily life of a newspaper. An industry professional, usually a journalist will give a lecture about this daily paper. Guide included Visit Duration: 60 minute visit Cultural Complex http://pragueculturalcenter.com/ The Palace of Arts in the Millennium City Centre building has permanent residents: the Ludwig Museum, the National Philharmonic Orchestra, Chorus and Music Library and the National Dance Theatre. At the same time, temporary exhibitions and events can be held in the theatre hall, the modern National Concert Hall and other impressive multifunctional spaces. Millenaris Park The original industrial buildings were partly destroyed and converted into a cultural exhibition and event centre. One of the factory s old building is equipped as a film studio (890 sq m), but it can be also used for concerts, theatre performances or conferences. Open Daily 11

Regional Highlights Danube Dinner Cruise The Danube River both unites and divides Budapest and is where many of the cities sights are to be found all of them illuminated at night. A cruise along the Danube takes in many of these famous landmarks and includes dinner taken in the indoor restaurant (vegetarian meals must be pre-arranged). Starting with a visit to Esztergom, continuing to the ruins of Visegrád castle overlooking the famous Danube Bend. The final stop Szentendre, a picturesque artistic town and provides free time to wander the picturesque streets. Coach & Guide Cost: 540 per group (max 48 passengers). Entrance Fees : 8 per person. Folklore Evening Folklore evening with dinner, accompanied by a gypsy orchestra followed by a spectacular folk-dance show, performed by 2 pairs of dancers. Gödöllõ Castle (Empress Elizabeth s Royal Summer Palace) Gödöllõ is the location of the Empress Elisabeth s summer residence. The visit takes the students around the carefully reconstructed rooms in which the style and architecture as well as the background stories are relayed by an informative guide. Guided Sightseeing Tour of Budapest A half-a-day sight-seeing tour that takes in the major sites of the city. Stops include the Heroes Square, the Castle Area, Gellért Hill, Fishermen s Bastion and the Matthias church. Duration: 3 hours Thermal Baths Budapest is Europe s largest spa town and the 120 or so thermal springs that gush up from the Buda limestone bedrock have long inspired a culture of bathing. The bathing habit has become very much a part of Budapest life, visits are possible to Gellért, Széchenyi, and Lukács. 12
