Tour Descriptions for Leknes, Lofoten Islands, Norway FULL DAY TOUR TO A Leknes, Lofoten Islands, Norway Tour Code: LKN_01 Departing Vestvagoy Island, you ll ride through the underwater tunnel to Flakstad Island, passing the little red church built in 1780 made of driftwood and believed to have come from Siberia. Visit the village of Nusfjord, one of Norway s oldest and best preserved fishing villages. You ll have time for a walk and a visit to the village store. Continue to the village of Reine, surrounded by beautiful mountains, en route there will be a stop to take a look at the bird cliff, by the side of the road. Next, you ll head to the village of A, once one of the most important fishing villages in the area now most of it is a museum. You ll see the old bakery, boat houses, fisherman s cabins and the place where cod liver oil was produced, which you ll be able to taste when visiting the Norwegian Fishing Village Museum in A. Your tour includes a lunch buffet with hot and cold dishes, desserts and coffee at a village restaurant. Note: Tour involves walking for approximately 30 minutes on uneven ground at the museum and gravel and up to 15 steps to negotiate. The museum does not have an elevator. Vestvagoy is the second largest island in Lofoten, where the village of Leknes is located. Your coach will take you from Vestvagoy Island through the underwater tunnel to Flakstad Island to visit Nusfjord, one of Norway s oldest and best preserved fishing villages. Here you ll have time for a walk around and a visit to the village store. A short stop will be made at the Flakstad church for an outside visit this little red church made of driftwood and built in 1780, is believed to have come from Siberia. Your next stop is at the old trading center at Sund for a visit to the blacksmith, well known for his handicrafts, especially his stylishly crafted cormorants cast in steel. A short drive will return you back to the pier. Note: Most of the walking on this tour is optional. At Nusfjord, walking is on uneven ground and there is a steep staircase to enter the village store. $156* $83* 4 hours German Spanish PANORAMIC DRIVE WITH NUSFJORD & VIGTEN Leknes, Lofoten Islands, Norway Tour Code: LKN_05 This panoramic tour takes in the scenic landscapes of the Lofoten Islands. You ll head west and drive through the underwater tunnel to Flakstad Island passing the little onion domed church, believed to have come from Siberia. You ll visit Nusfjord, one of Norway s oldest and best preserved fishing villages. Here you ll have time for a walk around and a visit to the village store and post office which boasts its own postmark. The fishing industry is still very much alive here and large hauls of fish are still caught in season. Continue to the village of Vikten and to Lofoten Design, idyllically located by the sea. Leknes is located in Vestvagoy, the second largest island. Your coach will ride through the small village of Leknes which is the administrative center of the island, with approximately 3,000 inhabitants. You ll be passing through rich farmland and beautiful, white sandy beaches on the west side of the island, a dramatic contrast to the cragged, weather beaten rocks and mountains behind them. You ll continue to Borg for a visit to the Lofotr Viking Museum. At Borg archaeologists have discovered a chieftain s farmstead containing sensational finds, bearing witness to a center of power during the Viking period. The main house is the largest Viking building unearthed, it measures 272 feet/83 meters long and 30 feet/9 meters high. A copy has been built next to the excavation ground and you ll feel as if you were transported back to the year 900. Before ending the tour you ll drive up to the viewpoint at Unstad for a panoramic view of the little settlement far below. Note: There is a 15 minute walk on a gravel uphill path from the parking lot to the museum and a couple of steps to enter the building. You ll drive through the small village of Leknes which is the administrative center of the island, with a population of about 3,000. Continue through rich farmland and along beautiful, white sand beaches on the west side of the island. Admire two of the most popular beaches Haukeland and Utakleiv. You ll stop in Ballstad, one of the largest and most important fishing villages in Lofoten. The boat yard features a large mural depicting the village in the old days. Note: There is no walking on this tour, only short photo stops. $104* $51* 2 hours HIKING TOUR ON VESTVAG Leknes, Lofoten Islands, Norway Tour Code: LKN_04 A 30 minute drive takes you from the pier in Leknes to Vendalsfjord where your hiking tour begins. The first portion of the hike will be along a comfortable road with an easy incline, until you reach an altitude of about 650 feet/198 meters. From here you ll have a panoramic view of the western and northern parts of Vestvagoy Island. You ll also see Gimsoy Island and the open ocean to the northwest. On very clear days you may also see the mainland of Norway in the horizon. From this highest point, you ll continue on a path to Tjonndalen, passing some small and abandoned farms along the way. You ll continue along the valley to the main road, where your coach will be waiting to take you back to the pier. Note: Participants must be at least 12 years of age, weigh no more than 210 lbs/95 kg and must be at least 5 feet/150 cm tall. Must also be in excellent physical condition, as all participants must be able to keep the pace and follow the group. This tour involves hiking for 3 1/2 hours on various terrain and on rough paths, as well as gravel and grass. There will be both steep inclines and declines during the hike. You must wear good hiking shoes and dress in layers for all kinds of weather. Guide will refuse participants with inadequate footwear.
