Renowned as the city of four million pagodas, this is one of the richest archaeological sites in Asia. Today there are more than 2,000 pagodas, temples and monasteries - most built during the Bagan Dynasty, founded by King Anawrahta in 1044. First, head to lively Nyaung-U Market to discover a variety of Burmese traditional breakfasts. Have breakfast at a local tea house, which is situated next to the market. The Nyaung-U Market provides great photo opportunities, and also the chance for tourists to mingle with the local Myanmar people, and watch how they conduct their daily lives. Then, visit a number of incredible temples including Shwezigon Pagoda, Htilominlo Temple, Ananda Temple, Thatbyinnyu Temple, Dhammayangyi Temple, ending with the Shwesandaw Pagoda in time to witness a superb sunset view from the top. One of the most fascinating visits will be a stop to watch monks during worship time and enjoying their daily meal at Mahar Gandar Yone Monastery in Amarapura. Then, proceed to Sagaing. The rest of the day is at your own leisure in Inle Lake.
