Chapter 1 : Jack Shelton's how to enjoy 1 to 10 perfect days in San Francisco. ( edition) Open Library Note: Citations are based on reference standards. However, formatting rules can vary widely between applications and fields of interest or study. The specific requirements or preferences of your reviewing publisher, classroom teacher, institution or organization should be applied. Are you trying to pull together a plan to see the best of everything in that one day? If so, then check out my recommendations for the perfect day in San Francisco. It also includes some recommendations on where to stop for meals along the way. This itinerary also includes quite a bit of walking. However, I offer some additional advice for those that would prefer to drive or take the bus instead. This amazing structure is one of the most recognized bridges in the world. The paths open every morning at 5am, so you can head over as early as you want. I recommend heading over sometime between 8am and 10am. During the foggier times of the year though, the bridge may stay hidden most of the day. In addition to strolling along the bridge, you can also check out their great, new mini-museum. It includes details on the building of the bridge as well as a great model showing how it works. The map below shows you where to find the trail head large star and the path that gets you down to Crissy Field smaller stars. If you have any problems finding the trail, step inside the cafe or gift shop for directions. As you walk along this path, you will find several places to stop for additional views of the bridge and the SF Bay. This trail takes you through a small white tunnel that offers very little lighting. Walk right through and the trail continues on the other side. When you reach the bottom of the staircase, you will be on Marine Drive. Head to the waterfront and take a right to start walking along Crissy Field. You can also take a walk on the beach and dip your toes in the water. The walk from the stairs to the end of Crissy Field is about a mile and a half. If you do not want to walk this far, pick up the 28 bus at the Golden Gate Bridge. Take it to Richardson and Francisco. This is the Palace of Fine Arts. This gorgeous building was completed for the Panama Pacific Exposition. This event was the reintroduction to San Francisco after the devastating earthquake. Spend 10 to 15 minutes here, admiring the intricate details of this beautiful building. This ride will take about 15 minutes. You have a number of options in this district for lunch. You can grab a bite to eat at the famed Buena Vista Cafe 2 on the map below. They offer local, fresh Dungeness crab from the nearby waters. You can also enjoy an Irish Coffee, a drink that this cafe introduced to the US. Their menu is deep and they serve breakfast all day long. Another great option is to grab lunch at one of the street vendors on Taylor Street. Here you will find a number of grab and go crab, lobster, and clam dishes including salads, sandwiches, and soup 3 on the map below. One of my favorite places to eat is at Boudin Bakery 4 on the map below. I LOVE their clam chowder in their sourdough bread bowl. You can either do a quick lunch in their downstairs cafe or spend a little time relaxing in their upstairs restaurant. This popular tourist district offers a variety of attractions and activities. They offer one to two night tours every Thursday through Monday. These tours give you a more personalized look at the history of this infamous federal prison and its inmates. You will pick up the night tour at Pier 33, just a short walk from Pier You will need to buy your tickets well in advance, as these are the most popular tickets and they only offer a small number for each tour. You can buy them up to 90 days in advance. The reason I love this tour is that you get a real feel for what it might be like to be a prisoner on The Rock. There are also fewer people on the island since these tours have only a limited number of spaces. This district features dozens of casual Italian restaurants where you can grab some pasta or just a slice of pizza. You will also find more than a dozen other places on Columbus Avenue. They all post their menus outside, near the door, so you can quickly decide which one is right for you. If your one day lands on a Tuesday or Wednesday OR you are unable to get the Alcatraz night tour tickets, then you can flip around this itinerary by visiting Alcatraz first. Most of these tours do one loop around the city that lasts about 2-hours. You can hop on and hop off at any point you desire along the way. It will make it easy to get to most of the top attractions and you will spend less time getting from place to place. This district is small, but has a few dozen hotels. You can also save on your visit by checking out the great deals on Booking. Page 1

They offer the best prices all year long on hotels in SF. Click here to check out a list of deals available during your stay. If so, then check out my itineraries for some additional days below. Are you looking for more activities for your stay? If so, then check out my list of 10 fun things to do during your one day visit. They include ideas for those visiting for the first time, as well as those coming back for a return visit. Some are similar to my recommendations above, but you will also find addition things to do during your stay. Page 2

Chapter 2 : How to enjoy 1 to 10 perfect days in San Francisco by Jack Shelton LibraryThing How to enjoy 1 to 10 perfect days in San Francisco by Jack Shelton,, Shelton Publications edition, in English - 4th ed., completely updated and expanded / by Jack R. Juhasz. ; edited by Dale Richards. It starts with a scenic cable car ride, includes a tour of Alcatraz Island get tickets in advanceâ it regularly sells out! F-Line Streetcar to Union Square. Union Square Named for a series of pro-union mass demonstrations staged here on the eve of the Civil War, Union Square is literally thatâ a square. Major sales aside, there are few bargains to be found, and even fewer independent retailers. But the ride is worth the wait. For maximum thrill, stand on the running boards during the ride and hold on Doris Dayâ style. Take a right onto Jefferson and follow it to Pier 33 to catch the ferry to Alcatraz. Be sure to buy tickets in advance! The brief but beautiful ferry ride offers captivating views of the Golden Gate Bridge, the Marin Headlands, and the city. Book well in advance because these tours consistently sell out. Both lines intersect each other. Best place to get off is Washington and Mason streets or Powell and California streets. Walk down a few blocks and you will be in: San Francisco has one of the largest communities of Chinese people in the United States, and more than 15, of them are condensed into the blocks surrounding Grant Avenue and Stockton Street. The dozens of knickknack shops are a great source of cheap souvenirs. Pop by China Live and order some potstickers and perhaps some dry-braised green beans. A stroll along Columbus Avenue will take you past the eclectic cafes, delis, bookstores, bakeries, and coffee shops that give North Beach its Italian-bohemian character. The best thing about North Beach is its concentration of old-school restaurantsâ many of them owned by the same family for generations. Chinatown has its culinary staples, too. Beach Blanket Babylon at Club Fugazi This whimsical live show is so quintessentially San Francisco, there may be no better way to end the day. Buy tickets in advance and prepare for the outrageous costumes and giant hats of the longest-running musical revue in the country. This information was accurate when it was published, but can change without notice. Please be sure to confirm all rates and details directly with the companies in question before planning your trip. Chapter 3 : What to Pack for San Francisco Year Round It is fun to read Perfect Days, especially the early editions, and marvel at the authors capacity for fine food and his ability to identify the places and activities that offer most fully the ineffable magic of San francisco. What to Do in 3 or More Days Updated: While it lacks that certain je ne sais quoi that would convince me to pack my bags and live there, I look forward to each visit with excitement and hunger. Yet, I remember my first time visiting San Francisco. What to do in San Francisco? What do you see in SF? So here is my post on how to make the most of your time in San Francisco and how to see and explore the city in just three days or less! This post will help you figure out what to see during your visit! What to Do in San Francisco: Taking public transit to see the Golden Gate Bridge is highly recommended, as parking is limited and there is usually construction in the area. Visit Crissy Field Also near the bridge, as you walk along the harbor toward the center of town is this park, which features a beautiful beach, restaurants, piers for fishing, and parks for Frisbee. It offers sweeping views of the entire harbor. Take a leisurely stroll around the lagoon, relax under the rotunda, or enjoy a picnic on the grass. It was shut down in the s and has since become a national landmark people can explore. Alcatraz Cruises is the official provider of tour tickets and transportation to and from Alcatraz. The food is overpriced and, to be honest, not that good. If you want to try some of the mouthwatering seafood that San Francisco is famous for, I really liked Waterbar and the Anchor Oyster Bar. The area is also serviced by two cable car lines: Hang out in the Mission After your busy day, go relax in Dolores Park for great views of the city. It was founded in and now is home to the only cemetery within city limits. The Mission District is a fabulous place to spend your night. Watch out for hipsters! Day 2 Ride the Cable Cars Riding the cable cars is an excellent way to tour the city and experience various neighborhoods in San Francisco. Catch the cable cars from Market Street. The history of Lombard Street is worth knowing. During the s, people in San Francisco were beginning to drive around in automobiles, but many of the hills were too steep to navigate. A local man named Carl Henry came up with the idea of using a curved street to help vehicles move downhill, although it would mean several sharp turns. Now you can watch the cars and bikers navigate the sharp turns as tourists gawk at them. It was built in to help beautify the city and features 27 fresco murals by different artists. Otherwise, you can explore the monument and murals at ground level. The murals here were painted in by local artists to depict life in San Francisco during the Depression. Opening hours are daily from 10am-6pm April-October, and 10am-5pm November to March. Chinese immigrants first came to the West Coast and set up shop in San Francisco. Due to racial segregation, this neighborhood became predominantly Chinese and has remained so, though the segregation is over. Chinatown here has some of the best places to eat Chinese food dim sum in the country, teahouses, bars, souvenir stalls, and fortune cookie makers. Eat your heart out here. Same views, cheaper price. Start at Lucky 13, where a wide selection of affordable beer makes for an ideal way to start the night, or hang out on the wrap-around balcony at The Lookout. The Summer of Love. Day 3 Take a walking tour San Francisco has a number of interesting walking tours that can teach you about the history of the eclectic neighborhoods or show you all the scrumptious food the city has to offer. Two of the best companies to use are: The ferry building is located along the Embarcadero at the start of Market Street. Opening hours are from Mon-Fri 10am-7pm, Sat 8am-6pm, and Sun 11am-5pm. Here are my favorites: Some sections of this museum are currently closed for renovations. Open daily, but hours vary per season. Exploratorium â Step into the fascinating world of science of at the Exploratorium, where a series of hands-on activities will keep you entertained for hours. Open Tueâ Sun from 10am-5pm. Thursday evenings from 6pmpm is adults only. De Young Art Museum â De Young showcases excellent art from the 17th centuries onward, including contemporary, photography, textiles, and more. There is an Observation Level on the 9th floor with great views over the city and hthe Pacific. Open Tue-Sun from 9: Walking from end to end will take half a day. Special thanks to Stuart for taking me around! Shabusen has amazing ramen, while Tenroku Sushi does some of the best sushi in the city. There are also a Page 4

myriad of cafes and cocktail bars to explore. Catch a game â San Francisco locals love their sports teams, especially the Giants, their really good baseball team. Visit wine country â Near the city are the world-famous Napa and Sonoma wine regions. If you love wine and have time to leave the city, you obviously need to come here. With its own history and community rife with arts, music, festivals, food, and popular sports teams, Oakland has become popular with hipsters and their bars and specialty restaurants. Take in the view â End your trip with a visit to Twin Peaks. You can drive up to the top of these small mountains to get a sweeping view of the city. Check out the Asian Art Museum â This is one of the most comprehensive collections of Asian art in the world, with almost 20, items in the collection. You can get free guided tours daily here to walk you through all the highlights and special exhibits that the museum has to offer. Rollerskate in church â The Church of 8 Wheels is an old church that has been converted to a rollerskating arena. You can expect a good party when you show up here â including DJs and live music. Rent some skates and join the fun there are times for both kids and adults. There are even lessons for people who have never rollerskated before! For suggestions on where to eat in SF, Jodi from Legal Nomads has this incredible list of restaurants! Book Your Trip to San Francisco: They are my two favorite search engines because they search websites and airlines around the globe so you always know no stone is left unturned. Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld. If you want to stay elsewhere, use Booking. I use them all the time. My suggested place is: The Green Tortoise â Upbeat spot with free breakfast, pub crawls, and dinners three times a week. My favorite companies that offer the best service and value are: Insure My Trip for those over 70 Looking for the best companies to save money with? Check out my resource page for the best companies to use when you travel! I list all the ones I use to save money when I travel â and I think will help you too! Page 5

Chapter 4 : How to Enjoy One to Ten Perfect Days in San Francisco by Jack Shelton (, Paperback) ebay Be the first to ask a question about Jack Shelton's How to Enjoy 1 to 10 Perfect Days in San Francisco Lists with This Book. This book is not yet featured on Listopia. The Outbreaker is the perfect bag to pack in for San Francisco. I usually wear a Lululemon windbreaker and pack a small umbrella in my purse. Activewear Speaking of which, make sure you bring something to hike, bike, or jog in! And, if you bike, be smart and wear a helmet. Biking in San Francisco can be, err, a little dangerous. Not only are those hills rough on walkers, but the Bay Area is super active. If you plan on packing your computer and carrying it around town, the the Outbreaker daypack is the way to go. Layerable Outfits If you leave your hotel at 10 a. So, make sure your undershirt can stand on its own in your outfit with layers. Even at most nicer restaurants in San Francisco, you can get away with a pair of skinny jeans and a nice top. My go-to outfit for just about everything is a pair of jeans with a nice tank top, chunky sweater, light windbreaker, and ankle height boots. Ladies, pack dresses that look good with a pair of leggings or tights. We love the Matador packable blanket. For blending in with those SF hipstersâ just kidding kinda. Pack sunscreen but leave the mosquito spray at home. Instead of warm nights and sunshine, we get to hang out with Karl in some drizzle. Again, leave the shorts at homeâ still not warm enoughâ nopeâ not yet. Pack at least one pair. Your bathing suit â For aforementioned wine country tripsâ or a ridiculously cold dip at Ocean Beach. Also, Gay Pride is in June. November starts to get a bit chillier but until then, we finally get our summer. Plan to pack the following for a trip to San Francisco in September or October: During these months, it would be my coat. Be sure to bring: Be sure to always bring a warm jacket, cooler layers, activewear, a day pack, sunscreen, and comfortable shoes. Want more like this?
