Faculty Guests JULIE & NATHAN HATCH NIGEL BIGGAR MICHELE GILLESPIE MICHAEL LAMB Nathan & Julie Hatch In their thirteen years at Wake Forest, Nathan and Julie Hatch have envisioned and led a number of special trips, both international and domestic, for Wake Forest trustees, parents, and friends. These trips have been wonderful opportunities to deepen relationships and experience both new and familiar places. Through their contacts and interests, previous trips have opened doors to new insights about history, culture, the arts, politics and current affairs. On this journey, the Hatches look forward to seeing iconic places with good friends through the lens of leadership and the liberal arts, and to being part of the robust discussions and shared experiences that make these journeys so memorable. Nigel Biggar Nigel Biggar is Regius Professor of Moral and Pastoral Theology at the University of Oxford and Director of the McDonald Centre for Theology, Ethics, and Public Life. A prolific author and frequent commentator on public affairs, his research interests include Christian ethics and human rights, the relationship between religion and politics, and the cultivation of virtue in universities. He studied at the University of Oxford; Regent College in Vancouver, Canada; and the University of Chicago. He is a close friend of Don and Robbin Flow from their time at Regent College, and his private tour of Christ Church was one of the highlights of our time in Oxford last year. In addition to being one of the world s leading experts on the ethics of war, he is an avid military historian who has led trips with Oxford faculty and students to the beaches of Normandy and other famous military sites. He will be providing a special guided tour of Normandy for our group. Michele Gillespie Michele Gillespie is Dean of the Undergraduate College and Presidential Endowed Professor of Southern History at Wake Forest. She earned her Ph.D. from Princeton University and her B.A. in history and English from Rice University. An award-winning teacher and author, she has taught courses on the Atlantic World, American Popular Culture, Women s History in Early America, the History of the American South, and the Politics of Memory and History in the U.S. and has published essays, collections and books on all these topics. A strong advocate for the engaged liberal arts, she leads joint student/alumni tours of Jefferson s Virginia and looks forward to sharing her knowledge of American political, cultural and intellectual leaders in Paris, from the 1780s to the present, with the group. Michael Lamb Michael Lamb is Assistant Professor of Politics, Ethics, and Interdisciplinary Humanities and Director of the Program for Leadership and Character at Wake Forest. He is also a Research Fellow with the Oxford Character Project. He holds a Ph.D. from Princeton University, a B.A. from Rhodes College, and a second B.A. from the University of Oxford, where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar. Before joining Wake Forest, he helped to launch the Oxford Character Project and served as Dean of Leadership, Service, and Character Development for the Rhodes Trust. He has developed innovative leadership and character programming rooted in the humanities and liberal arts and is a co-organizer of the 2019 conference on The Arts of Leading: Perspectives from the Humanities and Liberal Arts at Wake Forest. One of the leaders of last year s trip to Oxford, he will draw on his creative liberal arts-based approach to leadership, along with his expertise in ethics, religion, and political theory, to inform our discussions in France.

Accommodations CHÂTEAU D AUDRIEU Château d Audrieu, Normandy region In Normandy, our group will have exclusive use of the Château d Audrieu, located between Caen and Bayeux. This 18th century edifice, listed as a historical monument, offers the finest luxuries with the warm welcome of a family home. The elegantly proportioned château is set amidst more than 60 acres of wooded grounds and gardens with all the charms of Normandy. Turn the pages of history and discover not only the beaches of the D-Day landings, but also Bayeux and its famous Queen Matilda s tapestry and Caen the city of the Dukes of Normandy, and Mont-Saint-Michel a treasure of French heritage. HOTEL DE BOURGTHEROULDE HOTEL LUTETIA Hotel de Bourgtheroulde, Rouen The Hotel de Bourgtheroulde, a historical monument from the 16th century, sits at the heart of Rouen, the former capital of Normandy, the stronghold of the French Vikings, the fief of William the Conqueror, Henry II Plantagenet, Richard the Lionheart and the place where Joan of Arc was executed. This boutique hotel offers fine amenities, including a spa, indoor pool, fitness center in addition to a gourmet restaurant and the brasserie, a bar inside the beautiful historical atrium courtyard. Hotel Lutetia, Paris Hotel Lutetia is an iconic Paris landmark situated in the vibrant Saint- Germain-des-Prés area of Paris and the only luxury grand hotel on the city s Left Bank. Originally opened in 1910, the building s design was a daring move from art nouveau to the emerging style of art deco. Recently reopened this year after a four-year, $234 million renovation, The Lutetia delivers an authentic Parisian experience and has been at the heart of the local community for more than 100 years. James Joyce is said to have written part of Ulysses while staying here; Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse were residents in the 1930s. The hotel now features an eclectic mix of restaurants, bars and lounges throughout the historical ground floor including the return of the Lutetia Brasserie under the supervision of three Michelin starred chef Gerald Passedat.

Mont-Saint-Michel Pre-Trip Tour Option We are pleased to offer guests the opportunity for a special tour of the Mont-Saint-Michel, one of Europe s most stunning sights. This UNESCO World Heritage Site sits in the breathtaking bay where Normandy and Brittany meet. Atop the architectural marvel that is the Abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel, we will experience spectacular views and discover the lives of the Benedictine monks who have lived here throughout the ages, perhaps even hearing their Gregorian Chants vibrating through the church during mass. Our guide will direct us through the symbolism of this book of stone, as we explore from room to room, each one more incredible than the last. We will also be able to walk through the narrow cobbled streets of the village with its granite and half-timbered houses, then wander along the top of the fortification wall, built during the Hundred Years War when Mont-Saint-Michel became a medieval castle.
