Things not to miss in Chalon sur Saône The Old Town (2h) Chalon came into being as the main port to the Eduens people during the Gaulish period and saw its glory days at the beginning of the Middle Ages as the Merovingian capital of Burgundy, and then again at the end of the same period as the site of famous international fairs. Chalon is equally renowned as the birthplace of Joseph Nicephore NIEPCE, born here in 1765. It was in 1824, a few kilometres from here, that he invented photography. Today it is a city of Art and History, where you will find as you wander around the Old Town, half-timbered houses built between the 15 th and 17 th centuries, the restored facade of St Vincent s cathedral and the classical mansions of the 17 th and 18 th centuries. The Heritage Centre (L espace Patrimoine) (1h) Permanent exhibitions retrace the history of the town, from its origins to modern times. Information panels throw light on certain specific aspects, for example, the fortifications, the mansions and how the town has evolved through the centuries. The Niépce Museum (1h30) As the birthplace of photography, Chalon houses the first European Museum of Photography. Photographs, personal effects and cameras from 1861 onwards that belonged to Niepce have been collected and displayed here. Since the museum opened in 1974, the collections have been considerably enlarged enabling everyone, from those who know nothing to enlightened enthusiasts, to follow the history of photography via cameras and photographs. Permanent and temporary exhibitions. The Fortifications (1h30) The original boundary walls of Chalon-sur-Saône were erected in the 4 th century. The town then grew adding many new quarters and so a new boundary wall was built in the mid 16 th century. A century before Vauban, an Italian engineer called Girolamo Bellarmato constructed the boundary wall with towers. Along with the Bastion des Lepreux at the Chateau de Guise in Laon, the Bastion St Pierre is the last remaining example of its type in France, and a visit shows some of the techniques of attack and defence used in Renaissance times. The former St Laurent Hospital (1h30) Founded in 1529, the hospital dominates the Ile St Laurent. Discover the 18 th century pharmacy, the Renaissance building that housed the living quarters for the nuns of Sainte Marthe, the pewter room which served as both kitchen and pharmacy, and the refectory with its remarkable wood panelling dating from the 18 th century. The Denon Museum (1h30) Chalon s first museum, created in 1866 is as eclectic as the personality who bequeathed it his name, Dominique Vivant Denon. The many historic and prehistoric artefacts which came directly from the Saône prove that man has occupied this region for many hundreds of thousands of years. The fine arts collection includes works from the best periods of the French, Italian, Flemish and Dutch schools of the 17 th and 18 th centuries. Many of the rooms are dedicated to Denon and his contemporaries, including a number of local artists. St Vincent s Cathedral (1h30) St Vincent s Cathedral presents a number of different architectural styles: the oldest parts date from the 10 th century: the elevation of the nave is Gothic on a Romanesque base; the choir, the cloister and the side chapels are entirely Gothic; the frontage dates from the end of the 19 th century, and was the first in France to be completely reconstructed in the neo-gothic style. Inside, there are the Roman capitals, a tapestry dating from 1510, a 16 th century stained glass window and several interesting statues. 12 13

Things not to miss in the Grand Chalon A local heritage made famous by its richness The Château de Germolles (1h30) - Mellecey The School Museum (1h) Saint Rémy The Château de Rully (1h30) Rully The Cruzille Chapel (30 min) Châtenoy-le-Royal The Château de Demigny (1h30) - Demigny Niépce House (1h30) Saint-Loup-de-Varennes In 1380 Philippe le Hardi, Duke of Burgundy bought for his wife Marguerite of Flanders, the fortified house of Germolles. The Duchess then went about transforming it into a luxurious residence, commissioning the works of the best artists of the Burgundy School (Claus Sluter, Jean De Beaumetz). The tour takes you around the cellars, the lower chapel and the entry towers, the main hall, the chapel and the ducal apartments, as well as those of the court. The painted and sculpted decoration, along with the floor tiles attest to the quality of the chateau. An English style park added in the 19th century completes the site. The museum retraces the history of school life from the French Revolution to the present day in the form of the two classrooms reproduced here. The Republican School of the 19th century is presented in the Jules Ferry room, using educational materials and equipment of the time, like the desks, the back straighteners... In the 1930 s classroom it is the time of violet ink, steel nibbed pens and ink stained fingers, the time of lessons on morality... A mediaeval fortress built by enlarging a square keep dating from the 12th century, the chateau shows interesting military architecture: crenellated battlements, overhanging embrasures, arrow slits... The main dwellings date from the beginning of the Renaissance period. The vaulted kitchen in the tower has an enormous chimney and a large collection of copper kitchenware. The 18th century outbuildings have the largest stone roof in Burgundy. In the middle of a wine estate, the chateau has always belonged to the same family. The Cruzille chapel, classified as an Historic Monument, has a very modest looking exterior but the interior is superbly decorated in stucco in the style of Louis 14th. Formerly the residence of the Marquis de Foudras, famous for his hunting novels, and later the property of Emile Guimet, the famous orientalist. The present-day chateau dates from the Directoire period, having been rebuilt after the French Revolution on the site of an ancient fortress. Drawing rooms from the Directoire period, offer panoramic views of the surrounding vineyards. Museum of Hunting in Burgundy in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Maison de Niepce at St Loup de Varennes is the unusual and attractive place where Nicephore Niepce invented photography, calling it first Heliography and then Physautotype. We know that, along with his brother Claude, it was here that he invented the first internal combustion engine and made improvements to his velocipede. In April 1816 Nicephore Niepce started his first experiments which in 1824 brought him to the invention of photography. He finally succeeded in fixing the view from the window of his workshop on the first floor of the house onto a pewter plate. 14 15 In addition to these distinctive monuments, Grand Chalon is gifted with a rich heritage that gives it its specific identity. The wash-houses (lavoirs) at Fontaines, Crissey, St Loup de Varennes, to mention just a few communes, bear witness to how life was in olden days. The roadside crosses and calvarys that are dotted about the area are, for the most part, listed monuments. Romanesque architecture is also very much in evidence; good examples are the churches in Jambles and SaintDenis-de Vaux, among others, and there are many more that date from the Gothic period (the churches at Saint-Marcel, Saint-Germain de Gergy...). Add to this the real willingness to preserve and restore our existing heritage. Between the traditional and the exceptional local heritage, Grand Chalon is a unique area ready to be discovered now.
