GWRRA - Gold Wing Road Riders Association Region D - Michigan District Michigan District Region D "The Great Lakes Region" "Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge" NOVEMBER 2018 - NEWSLETTER / BULLETIN Anita Alkire President 800-843-9480 president@gwrra.org Ray and Sandi Garris Director of GWRRA director @gwrra.org Ken & Patti Kintner MI District Directors (517) 902-9893 gwrramiteam@gmail.com MI DISTRICT TEAM Michigan Team Contact Information is listed on last page Ken & Patti Kintner As the 2018 riding season comes to an end here in Michigan anyway Thanksgiving and all those holiday parties and celebrations are just around the corner. Patti and I are thankful to be involved in this great association of Friends for Fun Safety and Knowledge. Over the past 10 years it has become a 2 nd family to us and for that we are thankful. The Fall Officer Meeting was held in Clare on September 29 th. We wanted to have it a bit earlier this year before some of our Snow Bird officers left to spend the winter in a warmer climate. We shared much information and had some great two way communication between the district team and the chapter officers who attended. The Michigan Road Safari is a big hit with the members so we broke out into sections and the officers of each section came up with 4 new destinations for the 2019 Road Safari. Remember the 2018 Safari books need to be postmarked by October 31 st 2018 to be eligible for the prize drawing and T-shirts so get them mailed to Bob & Marcia Kinsey. (Kinsey s address is in the book). keep the prize at $10,000 for 2019. So we have the raffle license and the tickets are being printed. As soon as we get them ready we will be in contact with each chapter director to get the tickets in your hands so you can get an early start selling. Remember we still plan to give 30 cents from each ticket back to the chapters, pay the winners, cover the ticket license and printing costs and still be able to make a respectable donation to the Rainbow Connection. Not to mention help cover some of the costs of putting on Wingless Weekend AND the Michigan Rally. After all these two district events are to benefit YOU the members. The district team is here to serve YOU the members. So what is next? The district team is working with us to plan a great time for you at the Lakeside Resort in Houghton Lake. Our Wingless Weekend with the theme of SUMMER CAMP is sure to be as much fun as it was last time we had that theme. Yes we did it before a few years back. I remember all the fun skits the chapters came up with and how much fun we had dressing up for Summer Camp. Who wants a FREE registration for two for Wing Ding in Nashville Tennessee? We are pleased to announce that one lucky winner will receive it at Wingless Weekend so BE THERE! So mark your calendars for Wingless Weekend and get your Early Bird Registrations in by December 31 st. The drawing winner will receive free registration for two for the Michigan Rally in Evart. The Rally will be held August 8-10, 2019. There was a discussion about the future of our District Raffle and the need for members to sell enough tickets to make it work as the sales were wayyyy down in 2018. When it was all said and done we got a commitment from each chapter to sell enough tickets next year - that the District Team was able to make the decision to 1 Hope to see you all soon! District Motorist Awareness Program Coordinators Medic First Aid Coordinators Couple of the Year Coordinator Gary & Carol Williams I know that I can very much sound like a broken record at times. Sometimes we need to hear something over and over before it really sinks in and becomes reality. So, keep listening because the record is going to be played again. :-) As Chapter Directors, this is truly the time of the year to be seriously considering who will be given the honor of being your Couple of the Year and your Individual of the Year for 2019. This honor is given to them for what they have done for the Chapter this past year. It could be that they are members who are willing to do what needs to be done in front of the scene, or members who are willing to do what needs to be done behind the scene. It doesn't matter how long they have been members, as long as they have for at least one year. If it has been less than a year, keep them in mind for 2020! If they have have been given this honor before, they can receive it again. Your announcement of the 2019 Couple and Individual should be at some sort of special gathering. It would be great to present them with their medallions, name tags, and whatever else you may use to honor them. I suggest ordering these items from The Engraver. She is a lifetime member of GWRRA, and licensed to sell the products. You can find her at thengraver.com or email her at thengraver@aol.com or call her at 561-239- 2307 and she has a fast turn-around for orders. 5 She also has some unique ideas for gifts if you should choose to do something different. I hope you have gone over the information given you at the Fall Officer's Meeting. If you were not at the meeting, please contact me with your mailing address and I will get you the packet. And last but certainly not least, please encourage your Couple and Individual to complete the resume for the Selection Process. Please make sure they have read all the materials I left for them in your packet. This is a great honor of your Chapter to have them involved. If you, or they, have any questions at all, please contact me. I will do my best to have, or get, answers for you. Assistant District Educators Brent & Sandy Blackburn Hello everyone, I hope everyone has got their riding in for the year. Riding season is nearing the end for us staying in Michigan. For those that are fleeing the state for a warmer climate, take your motorcycle and think of us that are snow bound. Maybe we should switch over to snowmobiles and continue riding. Unfortunately, Honda does not make a snowmobile, but it doesn t mean we couldn t ride another brand. I have been seeing all the rides that some of the chapters have been posting on the Facebook and am glad everyone is having fun. I hear everyone loves the Safari Rides but I have been busy and not riding as much as I would like to. I have been thinking of putting together a weeklong ride to run the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Skyline Drive. This would include stops to National Parks and other points of interest. If anyone is interested in this trip and has points of interest on the way, near the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive, or on the way home. Please let me know your thoughts. Please send them to MichiganRideCoordinator@gmail.c om or call me at 248-622-9448 and I will see what we can do to work it in. Thank you, Brent and Sandy Blackburn Michigan District Ride Coordinators 6

Assistant District Directors West Section Randy & Cheryl Wiggins Wow! That is all I can say about how fast the summer flew by and fall is following right along. This riding season was packed full of great ridding days and lots of activities. I hope you were able to participate in some of them. We started our summer out with a ride to West Virginia with friends and found some great roads in the area. Downfall we ended up spending two of our vacation days stuck at the hotel with torrential downpours. Not much you can do about the weather. The good part of time at the hotel was meeting GWRRA members from southern Indiana, who had the same idea for a summer ride. we actually got to see the area. Gorgeous is all I can say and I look forward to the day we return to ride this again. Wing Ding was so much FUN! There were plenty of seminars to attend, it took us two days to make it through the trade show and we walked away with less weight in our pockets. It seems like every couple that sat down to talk with us use to live in Michigan. Working registration was a blast, members of Chapter V were a little excited, but they sure helped to make a lot of new friends. July was spent with lots of work days and very little time for riding. The MI Rally in Marshall was a lot of fun, but I ended up going by four wheels since Randy had to work, and I had things I had to bring down for the rally. No matter how you got there 2, 4 or more wheels we had a lot of fun at the rally and I look forward to next years rally. Some of you may have heard that a member from Chapter G had an accident while at Wing Ding and I want to Thank Kathleen and Ken Heibel our National University Assistants for making sure his bike made it back home and another Thanks to John-Carl & Diane Zarella from Chapter E for making sure the rider made it back to Michigan. August was a great month for riding. We headed down to Wing Ding, but we took the long way to get there, heading across Ohio to Virginia and then West Virginia to Waynesboro. We rode the Blue Ridge Parkway from beginning to end. Our first stop for the night was in Roanoke VA. We saw a lot more of the downtown area than what we were planning on seeing when we were trying to find a hotel, but Roanoke seems like a very nice city and maybe we will go back to visit some day. We rode 282 miles from Roanoke to Ashville NC the next day on the Blue Ridge Parkway; it was a long day at 35 mph, but well worth the trip. The views were so nice; this has to be one of my favorite areas to ride. The last day on the parkway was from Ashville to Cherokee, this was the third time we have been on the parkway and the first time it wasn t incased in fog so 7 Now I am looking forward to getting together with all my GWRRA friends at Wingless Weekend coming in February. I never went to summer camp, but I hear there are a lot of pranks and tricks done at camp so I look forward to the creativity of our members. Even though it seems like things are slowing down remember there are still plenty of dinners, parties and activities to keep you busy all winter long. Check the events page on the website and Google calendar for all Chapter activities. Hope to see you soon, Cheryl and Randy Wiggins ADD Western Section

2018 District Couple of the Year Dennis & Gayle Jisa From Dennis & Gayle Jisa GWRRA Mi COY 2018 We just can t believe how FAST the fall weather came in and just wants to hang around!! We hope you have been able to get out and do some riding and visit other chapters. We have had FUN attending the Officer s Meeting as well as Chapter Y s Anniversary Party and installation of their new Chapter Directors. We had the chance to sneak away for a week and went to Brandon Missouri to meet our son and daughter in law, who rode up on their wing from Louisiana. The weather was great but we only rode 5 hours a day as it got up into the low 90 s most of the week. We rode on some great back roads in Arkansas and Gayle was able to get together with a high school friend who now lives in Arkansas. Don t forget to get your room for Wingless as well as next year s Rally!! Those two events are huge and so much FUN!!! You sure don t want to wait and miss out! We also plan to attend the winter events in Ohio and Indiana so take a look at their flyers and come and join us in having FUN in the south!! The winter events just happen to be 3 weekends in a row in February! Michigans dates fall right at the Valentine Weekend so why not have a get away with that special someone in your life? Our theme is Summer Camp. It s time to encourage your Chapter Couple of the Year for 2018 to get their paperwork in to be in the selection process at Wingless!! It s so much more FUN when YOU get involved!!! We hope there are several of you that decide to join in the FUN!! The Traveling Plaque is still with Chapter W and has been since they took it from Chapter E in June!! Come on, get a group together and go get it!!! Just because its cooler weather doesn t mean we have to hibernate!! Car pool and made a day or evening of it by having dinner on the way there or back afterwards!! Lot s of chapters have been posting pictures of their Color Tour s this month and attending lots of Cider Mills. Oh those trees were so pretty, weren t they? Chapter E did their tour in cars as the weather was not good with snow, sleet, rain and some sun too! SO the 13 brave souls went in cars and went to an apple market, 3 wineries and a light house on the upper west coast of Michigan, near Traverse City! We stayed in a members summer home and had games of euchre going on upstairs and down as well as keeping the pool table hopping. We had breakfast and dinner at the house and went out for the planned rides by car pooling and eating lunch out in some great local eateries. Lots of great stories were shared when snuggled down for the evening. The Cider Mills were sure busy and oh those warm doughnut and delicious cider sure made the trip worth it!! YUM! Winter is coming but the FUN doesn t stop there!! It s time for Chapter Socials at members homes, card playing, movies together, bowling and have you attended a local play together and then there are dinners out as well. Hey, why not visit a neighboring chapter or invite them to join you for your Christmas Party this year? Whether you do a catered meal or pot luck these are so much FUN!!! Let s not sit around just waiting for the Spring weather before we get together. It s a good time to think about where you want to ride to next year and share with your chapter team to get it on the calendar. While attending the CD meeting at Wing Ding we were given the idea of making up funny money to encourage members to attend more events and see what great things they can buy with the loot. Chapter E is doing this over a couple of months and will see how it goes as to if it is done again. Gayle took play money and cut out faces of the chapter team and put them on different denominations of bills. Then printed out a bunch and numbered them so they could not be duplicated by anyone else. When you attend a Cider Ride, a Gathering, any chapter function ( and if you wear chapter attire you get extra) you get some of the money to use at our Christmas Party to buy some nice gifts. The more you attend and the more you wear chapter attire the more money you can get!!! If you have an idea on how to up participation share it with other chapters so they can use it as well.. If you ride, watch out for the leaves on the ground and dress appropriately for the weather.temperatures are cold in the morning, warmer in mid day and cool again in the evening. Ride Smart. Ride Safe! Hope to see YOU soon!! Till next time, Dennis & Gayle 8

District Webmaster & Newsletter Editor Ken Kuiper (KEK) Hello Michigan District, The past few months I have not received any pictures or articles from the members. Don t worry, I was able to download many pictures from Facebook. There are so many of them that I could not put them all in the newsletter. I m sure you don t want a 100 page newsletter. Right? There is a lot more room on the website so I can post most of the pictures there. As a reminder, when posting to Facebook, please give the chapter name, date, event. This will help me keep them organized. The next newsletter will be posted in January. My goal is to post a newsletter every other month. January, March, May, July, September, and November. My goal is to keep you, the membership, as informed as possible regarding the Fun, Safety, and Knowledge. GWRRA has to offer. On behalf of my family I would like to wish all of you joy and happiness during the upcoming Holiday season. Please be safe and I look forward to see you in 2019. Please send pictures and articles to me at kekuiper@outlook.com. Thank You Ken Kuiper (KEK, the Michigan Team has given me this nickname to avoid confusion with Ken Kintner, LOL) Michigan District Webmaster & Newsletter Editor 9
