Mickey Turner, Chapter Educator MAKING NEW YEAR S RESOLUTIONS Making New Year s resolutions are as traditional as the New Year itself. This is the time of year when people are thinking about what improvements they can make in their lives. Maybe change their behavior, maybe lose weight or try something new. So while you re thinking of resolutions to improve your life, give some thought to resolutions that improve your motorcycle safety. Here are some suggestions: Resolution # 1: Take an ARC riding course this year. Everyone should take a rider course periodically to maintain his or her riding skills. Learning and practicing proper techniques is the best way to ensure your own safety. Resolution # 2: Enroll in or renew your level and commitment in the Rider s Education Program. The only action needed is to commit to being a safe rider (or co-rider). As you become more experienced and more committed, move to a higher level by attending seminars and taking CPR/First Aid classes. Make a good example for others by practicing safe riding and wearing proper riding apparel. Resolution # 3: Practice the T-Clock Inspection before you ride. Check the tires, gauges, oil, lights, etc. Preventive maintenance is your responsibility. Negligence can jeopardize your safety, and cost you and your co-rider greatly. Resolution # 4: Become more active in Chapter activities. This is a good way to help each other become better (safer) riders. By being active in the Chapter you can share ideas and experiences between members, you can practice riding in group situations, and know about upcoming training and seminars. Resolution # 5: Attend more seminars, participate in Parking Lot Practices and read more about motorcycle safety. You can never have too much knowledge. By attending seminars you can benefit from the latest knowledge available about safe motorcycle riding and can learn alongside those who you ll likely be riding with. (Continued on next page) Page 5 of 21
Resolution #5: (Continued) Same goes for Parking lot practices. This is an opportunity to practice some skills and experience some road hazard situations in a protected environment. Read, read, read. The Internet is full of websites concerning motorcycle safety and maintenance. Good articles can be found in the Wing World, and the Gold Book has much useful information on what to do. Also, each month a short article (like this one) is in the Chapter newsletter. Resolution # 6: Make the Year 2019 the best ever. Resolve to increase your knowledge and skills to make safe journeys that will bring us together on the roads and get us back home again. To a Safe, New Year! Mickey Turner Chapter Educator Page 6 of 21
We don't have a glass of champagne, but we would like to make a toast to Chapter Q. May she prosper in the New Year. May those of us who are Chapter Q, continue to enjoy good camaraderie, safe riding, and just plain fun. Here's to you (and us) Chapter Q! Connie and Mickey Page 7 of 21
Introducing one of our new members, Mr. Frank Washington, Sr.: Frank was born in West Helena, Arkansas on June 2, 1955. He is married to Mrs. Barbara Washington, and they have 4 children. Frank served in the US Army from September, 1975 until he retired in June, 1997. In 1975, he accepted his call into the Gospel ministry and continues to serve today as the Pastor of the New Way Community Church, Church of God in Christ (C.O.G.I.C.). Frank became interested in riding motorcycles in 1981 because the price for a gallon of gas reached $1 per gallon. A motorcycle was a very economical mode of transportation. Motorcycling started as transportation but quickly evolved to great enjoyment. Frank s first motorcycle was a Kawasaki 550 LTD, and then he moved up to a Kawasaki 750 Vulcan. The Goldwing that he now rides is his third bike, but the Goldwing is his dream bike (Yeaah!) Frank enjoys riding for peace of mind, scenery and getting to visit nice places. WELCOME, FRANK! SO GLAD THAT YOU CHOSE TO RIDE WITH GWRRA AND CHAPTER Q!!! Page 8 of 21
