JAPAN BY TRAIN ESCORTED TOUR 20 30 SEPTEMBER 2018 JAPAN BY RAIL 12 DAY SAMPLE ITINERARY 日本へようこそ Nihon e yōkoso Welcome to Japan Over a period of many centuries, Japan has slowly developed from an ancient civilization into one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world, but there s a lot more to Japan than its urban landscapes. Japan offers exquisite scenery across the country for people to soak in its beauty; its gardenfilled history is linked to the Shinto, Buddhist and Taoist faiths, offering the visitor serenity and tranquillity. Here the old blends with the new; the natural blends with the industrial; the train system is known for its speed, cleanliness and reliability; the cuisine is world famous, the people are gracious and friendly and Japan is one of the safest countries in the world. At the top, try the famous hardboiled egg, cooked at the source of the springs and add seven years to your life, according to local lore! Cruise on a majestic replica pirate ship across Ashinoko Lake, formed by a volcanic eruption over 3000 years ago! Then take a ride on Hakone Tozan switchback train, zigzagging though the mountains, with breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys. Keep an eye out for a glimpse of Mt. Miyajima Island is the popular name of Itsuku-shima Island, situated in Hatsukaichi City in southwestern Hiroshima. It is a scenic site in which the mountains, sea, and red shrine buildings blend together in harmony, and the entire island is designated as a historic site. Your day starts with Itsuku-shima-jinja Shrine, a unique shrine seemingly floating in the sea. It boasts of a solemn and gorgeous architectural beauty in the shinden-style, the palace style popular around the 10 th century. The main shrine with its red pillars and white walls, along with the symbol of Miyajima, the O-torii Gate in the sea, create a wonderful contrast with the dark green woods and deep blue sea. It was inscribed as a World Cultural Heritage Site in 1996. As the name implies, Momiji-dani Park, or Maple Leaf Park, where the Momiji-dani-gawa River flows, has many maple trees, and is a famous spot for viewing autumn leaves in November. Climbing Mt. Mi-sen from there by ropeway or on foot along a climbing path is also a wonderful experience. From the mountaintop, you can enjoy the beautiful scene of the numerous islands of the Seto Inland Sea. After spending the day at Miyajima, return by ferry and train to your hotel in Hiroshima with your local guide. Full day Private English-Speaking Guide in Miyajima Local Train Ticket from Hiroshima Station to Miyajima-guchi Station (Covered by JR Pass) Ferry Fee (Covered by JR Pass) Admission Fee 6 P a g e

O-torii Gate Cableway up Mt Mi-sen Day 10: HIROSHIMA - KYOTO Breakfast Bid farewell to Hiroshima, and hop on the Shinkansen train for a final ride to Japan s cultural capital, Kyoto on your own. Home to an astonishing 2,000 shrines and temples, including 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, this destination will have you enraptured in the ancient customs of Japan. Upon arrival, make your way to the hotel in Kyoto on your own. KYOTO CENTURY HOTEL, Comfort Room or similar. Spend two nights here. Enjoy the rest of the day exploring this famous city at your leisure. Today is a free day and there are no services organised. Shinkansen Train Ticket from Hiroshima Station to Kyoto Station Ordinary Reserved (Covered by JR Pass) Day 11: KYOTO Today, enjoy a tour of the former imperial capital with a knowledgeable local guide, utilizing Kyoto s convenient bus and subway system to visit some of its iconic World Heritage Sites. Travel to Nijo Castle, built by the founder of the Edo Shogunate. Observe the momoyama architecture, decorated sliding doors and chirping nightingale floors as you stroll through the palace grounds. Venture onwards to Ryoan-ji, the site of Japan's most famous rock garden. Get a glimpse of Zen Buddhist tradition as you gaze onto the precisely arranged stones. Sit back on the patio and consider the significance of this meditative spot, before you head to Kinkakuji, or the Golden Pavilion. Originally a retirement villa for the Shogun, Kinkakuji is now a Buddhist temple and one of the most famous sights in all of Kyoto. In the afternoon, enjoy a guided stroll in Kyoto s most charming district, Higashiyama. Begin with Kiyomizu Temple, taking in the incredible vistas of the city from the 13-meter high veranda jutting out from the main hall. Marvel at its unique architecture, built without the use of nails or any kind of joiners. Descend, and wander around Higashiyama s busy lanes, enjoying the array of quaint shops selling souvenirs including Kiyomizu-yaki pottery, sweets and pickles. Enjoy dinner at a local restaurant near your hotel. Several of the buildings at Kiyomizudera are being renovated step by step over the coming years. Currently, the Okunoin Hall, which is well known for the temple's secondary balcony and the neighboring Amida Hall and Shaka Hall are being renovated. The construction has a certain but not overwhelming impact on a visit. Full day Private English-Speaking Guide in Kyoto Public Transportation Fee, Admission Fee 7 P a g e
