MEMBERSHIP 2019 P1

WELCOME Contents Welcome 3 Club Improvements 4 Member Benefits 6 A South Bank Stroll 8 Special Offers & 2019 Bedroom Rates 10 A Team to be Proud Of 11 2019 Events Calendar 12 It is my pleasure to welcome you to a new membership year. 2019 promises to be very busy on all fronts for the team here at The Union Jack Club. Your comfort and safety are a priority for us, so we have a rolling programme of improvements which will be made to all aspects of the club. In 2018 we made significant investments to improve facilities and security at the club, which included electrical bedroom locks, re-roofing the building and creating 27 new double and 3 single en suite bedrooms. These were made possible by a generous grant from The Nuffield Trust for the Forces to the Crown. 2019 will be equally busy with work scheduled to include the ongoing repainting of bedrooms, in addition to some behind the scenes upgrades to plant and equipment. None of this would be possible without your support for the club and we are always grateful for your continued loyalty. Each year we aim to provide an interesting spread of social activities for you, our members, which in 2019 will include talks, with the introduction of lunchtime ones, wine and food tasting, movie nights, and other entertainment. We will continue to mark important dates and anniversaries at the club during the year. Whatever the occasion, rest assured that you will spend it with like-minded friends and colleagues in a relaxed and welcoming environment. With the Cricket World Cup coming to London in May, as well as many other sporting and entertainment fixtures in London, there will be plenty of opportunities to watch these events either in the comfort of the club with your friends, or elsewhere in London with the club as a launch-pad. I am pleased to remind you of the recent change to our membership rules; you are now able to bring up to 8 guests to the club, either for events or simply to enjoy the facilities. There is also a 4-guest maximum to the number that you can bring to stay in our bedrooms. The Union Jack Club is a charity which, since it was opened in 1907, has welcomed over 20 million members and guests. As such we welcome your donations and legacies that enable us to continue to offer the standard of service and welcome that you have come to expect. We look forward to seeing you in 2019, and encourage you to bring friends and family to enjoy this unique club. Simon Atkins Chief Executive P2 P3

CLUB IMPROVEMENTS We have a broad spread of membership and aim to cater for all needs in creating a welcoming home away from home for our members and their guests. We are pleased to have now completed our bedroom refurbishment programme which started 5 years ago, with the new en suite rooms. Also, as we take security very seriously at the Union Jack Club, this has resulted in introducing electronic locks to the doors of all our bedroom accommodation. The completion of this work means that we now have 261 bedrooms offering a range of versatile accommodation for individuals, couples, families, and groups. This includes 12 fully accessible bedrooms, 4 spacious flats and 8 family bedrooms, in addition to one deluxe suite. Other enhancements to the club include a new outside lift, air conditioning in the bar, and further lift refurbishment. Over a period of five months, and behind the scenes, we have completed the necessary replacement to all our flat roofs. This year we have upgraded our meeting and banqueting facilities, meaning that many of the meeting rooms now feature large high quality 4k presentation screens. As a Union Jack Club member, you are entitled to members rates for any booking of these rooms. They are ideal for a private reception, dinner, or meeting for which Marcin Koch, our Head Chef, is pleased to present a range of Best of British menus based on the finest seasonal produce. For more details visit the website at www.ujclub.co.uk P4 P5

MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS Whilst our membership numbers are very healthy, we are always keen to see new faces at the Union Jack Club. Your feedback shows us that what we offer at the club is difficult to beat, whether you are a serving member of the military or a veteran. If, therefore, you have any friends or colleagues who you think would enjoy the benefits of a membership with us, do bring them along to one of our many events and have a drink, or a bite to eat in order to experience the club s welcoming atmosphere first-hand. Don t forget that, following a recent enhancement to the membership, you can now bring up to 8 guests. Whether you are staying at the club, coming in just for the evening or for lunch, the refurbishment of our popular restaurant and main bar now provides more space to enjoy the range of excellent food and a high quality selection of wines all at great prices. Marcin Koch, our head chef, has created a range of seasonal dishes for all tastes. Whether it be his ever-popular traditional fish and chips, or his newly formulated dishes, he insists on sourcing the freshest quality ingredients from local suppliers. We also serve what we are regularly told is the best breakfast in London. The Union Jack Club restaurant is open to all members and their guests, and is the perfect place to get together with family and friends whatever the occasion. If you are looking for something a little more relaxing, our main bar always has a tasty selection of hot dishes, salads, and sandwiches to accompany an extensive portfolio of very reasonably priced beers and spirits. As we continue our ever popular series of talks on military events of note in 2019, we will also be hosting gin and whisky masterclasses and other special evening and lunchtime social activities. For national days, and other important dates in the calendar, we will have special themed menus. All the events currently planned for 2019 are detailed on the website at www.ujclub.co.uk and can be booked online. As you know the many reasons for being a member of the club include the excellent value food, drink and accommodation. Spending time at the club when you are in London has so much more to offer than an average hotel. With our convenient location next to Waterloo Station, in addition to several London sights being on our doorstep, the Union Jack Club is justifiably proud of what it has to offer serving and veteran non-commissioned personnel. If you are making a flying visit to the city, are staying throughout the week to work, or are simply making use of the free bag drop, rest safe in the knowledge that you will be met by friendly faces, and that you will be among friends. If you happen to be swinging by for a coffee, the Espresso Bar is open every day from 0700 to 1700, and the club has a constant stream of 100mb Wi-Fi. If you have more time on your hands, head to the games room for a game of pool or table tennis. Alternatively, just sit back with a good book in the club s well stocked library. For those of you travelling further afield you can also avail yourself of the reciprocal club memberships we have worldwide. Details of all the benefits of membership and special offers can be found on the club website www.ujclub.co.uk P6 P7

A SOUTHBANK STROLL One of the great benefits of staying at the Union Jack Club is its close proximity to some of the most interesting historic sights of London. A guide to nearby walks is available in reception. As you step out of the Union Jack Club you will inevitably be spoilt for choice but one of our more popular walks explores the Southbank. As you head out of the club you could start with a trip to the London Eye from which you will get a spectacular view of the city s landmarks. The Southbank is London s cultural district, home to our national centres for arts, film, music and performance. As you head east, follow the river in order to take in the distinctive architecture of the Royal Festival and Queen Elizabeth Halls, in addition to the Purcell Room and the Hayward Gallery complex, which was originally completed in 1968. Your destination along the riverside walkway is Southwark Cathedral and the nearby Shard which offers another opportunity to get up high and view London. Our advice is to take your time; there are fascinating places to stop for a coffee or a snack, buskers to listen to, and book stores to browse. You will pass Shakespeare s Globe, the faithful recreation of the 1599 playhouse, followed by the highly contrasting structure of the Tate Modern, which boasts an iconic array of modern and contemporary art. London s Lambeth Palace is on The Queen s Walk and has been the London residence of the Archbishop of Canterbury for over 700 years, and can now be explored via guided tours. You are now within striking distance of HMS Belfast, the last surviving cruiser of the Royal Navy. Close by, on Pickford s Wharf, is the Golden Hinde II - part of an excellent museum dedicated to the life of Sir Francis Drake. Although a replica, the ship gives a realistic sense of the life and times of England s most famous sailor. If by now you are peckish, then take the opportunity to explore nearby Borough Market, one of the largest and oldest food markets in London, dating back to at least the 12th century. Suitably refreshed you can retrace your steps or alternatively cross over Tower Bridge and head for London s great castle, The Tower of London; fortress, royal palace and infamous prison and home to over 23,000 royal gems. If you are footsore by now, we can recommend taking a leisurely boat trip from the Tower Millennium Pier to the London Eye Waterloo Pier prior to a welcoming drink back at the UJC.
